...I've come seeking guidence both mentally and physically...

Welcome Andrew.

My guidance to you is do some more reading on both SF and SEALS. While both are SOF units we are not essentially the same. ;) Nonetheless, enjoy the site and be sure to utilize the search button...its amazing what info is often overlooked.

...I don't know much...

Maybe you should consider your knowledge level and your audience (if thats not asking too much) before opening your pie-hole in the future. You really need to fix that lil attitude of yours before someone has to do it for you, presuming you make it to BUD/s.

Fix the attitude; you wont be told again.

Gentlemen,

I was referred to this site by a QP in my AO to do some research. I am a former Marine 0311, with 8 recent years in. I am currently in the WA NG, and am preparing to go to SFAS at the nearest opportunity. I am OCONUS in a PMC capacity, and trying to make the necessary admin and personal preparations to attempt SFAS.

I am impressed with this board so far, and I appreciate the willingness to share that which so few can attain. I am hoping to become an 18B some day, since that will tie in with my experience as a Marine, and my previous contracting experience to a certain extent. If nothing else, I am at least on the right track.

I will go back to lurking and researching. Thank you for having me aboard.

Greetings Quiet Professionals,

First of all, thank you for this site and the wealth of information that has been contributed. I feel fortunate to have found y'all.

I'm a former TX Army National Guard Medic. I ran with the FiST team 1/133rd Field Artillery 1996-2002. I've recently become interested in getting back into the service and have started the process of a direct commission as a Registered Nurse. I've chosen to go with the Reserves for now for several reasons, but will probably switch back to the Guard in a couple of years. I always dreamed of becoming a Ranger or SF when I was younger, 18 or so. I just never thought it was within my reach for some reason or another. It was probably just lack of confidence in myself. That has changed as I have grown older, (29 yrs old now). I recently learned of the new TX SF group and tryouts. I immediately became very interested in SF again and have been getting back into shape to prepare for the tryouts. I'm also reading my new copy of "Get Selected for Special Forces" by Major Joe Martin. What a great book! I've been reading lots of good info on this site and will continue to do so.

Thanks again for your site and your knowledge,

Hello,

I'm 25 years old and currently living in Ontario, Canada. Heres a little about myself.

In 2006 I joined the Canadian Forces but unfortunately suffered a knee injury while training. I continued for approximately 2 weeks on the bad knee untill I was ordered to report to the base hospital. I was pulled from my training platoon and put with a PAT platoon.

After 6 months of constant physiotherapy and numerous examinations by several different doctors with no progress, I decided to self release from the Canadian Forces. I was also told during those 6 months that my knee would never fully recover and later on in life I would have some difficulty walking.

So now here I am 17 1/2 months since I injured my knee, doing very well, and in the process of re-enlisting to the Canadian Forces. It took me almost a year and a half but I finally feel that I'm back where I belong.

I would like to thank you for keeping this website open to the public. I've learned a tremendous amount in the short period of time I've been visiting. Advice/Critism/Opinions and welcomed and wanted. Unless critical, this will most likely be my only post.

I'm all ears and no mouth.

I am a SGT in the Army. I have been a light 21B all my career. Some of us may remember when it was a 12B. I am 42 years of age and seem not to know it or know better for that matter. I joined at the tender age of 29 so that I could get my butt kicked in to shape. Now I am in to kicking my own. I started as National Guard and have since moved to the Regular Army. I was looking at a 3rd tour and decided to jump all the way in before that happened. So I am at a wonderful Army post and starting SF PT in a week and 6 days. I supplement current PT with evening weight training and/or extra cardio depending on the cycle (and what kind of exercise my mind needs). I am also doing the six meal a day thing. I am on a slow upward burn to gear up against injury, as I heal slower, and to harden the weak points before selection in 6 months. I have also increased my reading and correspondence course load. I am here to listen, learn, do, and teach. Thank you for your time.........

Well, let's see here.

I'm 22, originally from the Fayetteville area, and I come from a military family. I have two family members who wore the tab (dad is still active, and I've actually recognized at least one person on this forum from a team party or two) and I'm finding myself looking more and more at earning it myself.

I just commissioned (sort of -- I won't have my paperwork pushed through 'till I finish a summer class) from my University's ROTC program. I opted for National Guard duty for some reason that remains unknown to me today, but I'm thinking that might work to my benefit, as from what I've noticed, the NG is just a giant paperwork game. I had originally branched Signal Corps (and currently drill with a stand-up signal co in CLT), as I viewed the military as just a means to finish school, but for reasons I can't explain I felt the need to volunteer to switch over to IN; assuming all goes well I'll be deploying with the 30th HBCT pretty much as soon as I'm branch qualified. Right now the plan is to do my time as a PL, keep myself primed physically and mentally, and put in the packet as soon as I hit 1LT-P.

I was put on to the site by a buddy who is looking at joining the military to get out of IT hell. I originally thought it would be full of scammers and wanna-be operators -- all the operators I've ever met religiously considered PERSEC a priority. The fact that I've recognized people on here plus the Hall of Shame eases my skepticism. Evidently it's possible to have one's status known without advertising one's address, SSN and license plate number over the internet. Lesson learned.

(Side note: the same friend showed me this thread: http://www.professionalsoldiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17433 I know the guy who was featured in those pictures; he commissioned with me. I can provide a name and/or social networking profile sites as evidence if requested. He branched infantry, so we'll see how that goes. He was always kind of a peacock.)

The Old Man has given me priceless advice, but the main thing I always hear is "listen to your NCOs." I figure if there's ever a source of information for me to learn from, it would be from a group of Green Hats. Thanks for your time.

A lifelong shooting enthusiast and stockholder in LWRC. I'm concerned about the direction the country seems to be headed and, believing that all good citizens should be armed, am excercising my Second Ammendment rights by acquiring, shooting and training with NFA weapons. Good evening everyone. I'm a 28 year old out of Los Angeles. I am a recruiter with the California State Military Reserve. The CSMR is authorized as a state defense force under the provisions of the Title 32, United States Code, Section 109 and the California State Military Reserve Act (codified in the California Military and Veteran's Code).

I'm more commonly classified as a "missed opportunity" to serve individual. I grew up wanting to be a soldier, but that influence that needs to be there when it is time to walk down that path was not there, and it didn't even cross my mind. Fast forward 10 years, I have a great career, a home, a wife, a baby girl...and the need to serve almost burned a hole in me. I found the CSMR, ran down, and enlisted immediately.

As the State Defense Force of California, we are a part of the California Military Department, the parent organization of the California Air and Army National Guard. We are an equal player. However, we do not have a Federal charter, therefore our service is in state only, although we have been activated to serve in other states as well, last time being Katrina. We work hand in hand with the Guard on their homeland security mission, and step into their shoes when they go over seas. We are also in charge of a ton of training for the Guard, we run their SRP's, teach them at their AT's, etc.

I have the most respect in the world for those who serve, and I am humbled to be able to serve them myself.

Aloha Gang,

My name is Brad. I am a SSG in the intel section of the 1/20th SFG out of Huntsville AL. I live in Freetown Sierra Leone and I run the local gurad force at the U.S. Embassy here.

I joined the Army Reserves after high school in 1991 as a 91B (Combat Medic). I decided to go active in 1993 and the only MOS that offered the airborne option was 96B (Intel Analyst). I was on active duty for two years and then went on IRR for a couple of years.

I missed it and joined the USAR again, this time as a 96B for the 345th MI Bn in Augusta Georgia (my hometown). We were activated after the attacks and I went over for OEF and OIF but never left the CFLCC C2 in Kuwait. We supported the ops from Camp Doha. After 26 months on active duty I was put back on reserve status.

I ETSd out in early 2006 but again missed it so I joined up for another six year hitch but this time I got smart and joined Special Forces, 1/20th SFG (ABN) ALNG. I can say without a doubt that it was the best move I have ever made since I first signed up.

I have done more training, had more fun, and felt most proud the past year and a half than I ever did in anywhere else in the army. The support folks like me were sent to the SFBCC last year and I shot more ammo, learned more useful things that will save my life, and felt more confident that I can deploy with my unit and be an asset than all my other years of AT's added up.

Joining SF is the best military choice I ever made. I am not sure what will happen in the next four years but I look forward to doing my part to make the unit and teams I support the best they can be.

Airborne All the Way!

Hello everyone, my name is Raymond. I'm currently an active duty soldier that is a full time student at Fort Sill. The commissioning program that I am in is Green to Gold Active Duty Option. I'm one year away from a BAS in Computer Information Systems. I've been in the Army since March 2004 and I am loving it.

My MOS is 13P Fire Direction Specialist for MLRS. I reenlisted back in 2006 for
25B Information Systems Specialists, but then I deployed to Iraq so my slot was pushed back. With 10 months in Iraq, I was picked up for Green to Gold, and I came back to Fort Sill.

My intent is claw my way through SFAS and Q course into SF as a 18A. I am eager for the challenges, hard training and commoraderie <sp?>. :lifter

I have been a long time lurker on this site, just soaking up all the knowledge, and hopefully when I hit that 1LT, I will be dropping my packet for SF. But as noted by QP's to stay focus on the 25m target - so graduating is the priority at the moment.

Hello Everyone,

My name is John and I am from Fayetteville, North Carolina. I am 18 years old and I am currently doing my best to join the U.S. Army, particulary becoming a part of USASOC. My whole life I have been training, reading, doing PT, doing all that I can to prepare myself mentally and physically, not just for the army in general, but aspiring to become a member of Special Operations. I don't want to come across as a John Rambo Jr., because that's not what I'm going for.

I will be graduating high school soon and I have been trying to join the Army since February of this year. I sent a medical prescreen to Raleigh, NC MEPS and they sent it back saying that I wasn't eligible to process due to me having 2 collapsed lungs last year. My right lung collapsed in February of
last year (2007) and while I was in the hospital getting a chest tube for my right lung, my left lung collapsed, but it was able to reinflate itself by the time my right lung was expanded. I was in the hospital for 3 days for my right lung. 2 weeks later, I could tell that my left lung was collapsing again, so I went to Duke Hospital in Durham and I got VATS done on my left lung. According to medical professionals, you are only supposed to do VATS if you are recurrent and my surgeon at Duke thought that I had a history of Pneumothorax in my left lung, so he did VATS, so I guess he read my history wrong. All of this happened within a month, but MEPS is still counting it as multiple Pneumothorax and are telling me that they may not reconsider me until 2010 (AR 40-501 says that I must wait 3 years).

Nevertheless, me and my never quit attitude continues to fight it out. I went to MEPS in Richmond, Virginia to try and process and I was able to get through the whole physical with no problems, other than my Pneumothorax. The Chief Medical Officer there said that I would definitely get a waiver for this. I was in high spirits at this point and I thought sure I would get a waiver. Four days later, my recruiter calls and says that they denied my waiver. I have an active duty officer that is helping me get a medical waiver and he looked at my database and the MEPS station never even sent my waiver to USAREC. I called MEPS in Richmond to get info on my waiver process and they said that USAREC denied it, but I found out that it never left their office. Courtesy of civilians dictating if you join the military or not.

MEPS is bar none one of the most hypocritical processes I have ever went through in my life so far. My civilian surgeons state that I am fine, and I know that I'm fine. My recent APFT score is a 270, I know it isn't perfect, but I am continuing to work for a 300 or above. Your average recruit doesn't even score that, so my score not being a perfect 300 should be irrelevent. MEPS likes to use the excuse that "Your civilian doctor has no prior military experience and doesn't understand the rigorous training that the military does." Ok, having said that, the military hires civilians to work at MEPS, who have had no prior military experience, and these folks are dictating whether I join or not.

I'm not a jackass that knows he isn't qualified, but is trying to join anyways. This is probably how I am being labeled by MEPS and the Army, but I wouldn't be wasting mine and their time if I knew I wasn't qualified.

I have written my Congressman and I am almost done filming a video of me doing PT that is above and beyond regular army standards and I am getting my recruiter and station commander to help me send it to USAREC, I just pray to God that they don't shove it under some stack of papers because they are having a bad day and actually watch it.

We are at a time where we need good future NCOs, good future soldiers. There is a war going on and we are hurting for men in boots. It strongly offends me that some joker who has no knowledge of the military and just joins for the benefits, gets through the MEPS process with a breeze, he ends up hating the army and gets out after 3 years. This guy is allowed to join, but not a motivated and well fit guy like me. Even better, you got some guy who has a history of being in trouble with the law and has done every drug on the earth, but this guy gets a "Moral Waiver" and gets in. But no, the ones with the so called "medical conditions" have to prove their life away that they are fit to join. It's a shame that the system is crooked this way. Everytime someone hears me speak out the way things actually are, they just give me a whatever and that life isn't fair. This is the attitude that is spreading like a disease and it creates a demoralizing mindset that can be seen throughout conventional units and both the military and civilian side of our country. This "I don't care attitude" and "I just hop on the bandwagon and go along with everyone, whether it be right or wrong" attitude needs to cease. It is so easy to do the right thing, so why doesn't anyone do it? I am not in the army yet, so you are probably thinking that I am unqualified to even state my opinion on the matter, but I know that you know where I am coming from.

I wanted the Option 40 Contract (11B--Airborne--RIP) contract and spend some time in the 75th Ranger Regiment. Good Lord willing everything goes right, spend some time there, then carry over into Special Forces. As this plan is currently delayed due to my situation with MEPS, I have registered for an EMT course and will try and work my way up to Paramedic until I can join in 2010. I consider it the closest thing to being in a high stress environment like the military. I can't be a cop because I'm not 21 yet, besides, you can't go wrong with the medical field.

I apologize for the ranting, but I am going to keep fighting and giving it my all to join up. We need high quality NCOs on the battlefield and good soldiers to lead the way. I already have the Ranger Creed memorized and everything.

My time is coming.

Sorry again for the rambling, but that is my life at the moment.

John:

Welcome to PS.com and thank you for your willingness and desire to enlist. But at this time it isnt in the cards for you.

Having said that your assumptions about the way the Docs at MEPS interpret AR40-501 are wrong. The Docs at MEPS have a job to do and thats to put medically QUALIFIED recruits into the military not those who have a great chance of having future trouble with preexisting medical conditions. AR40-501 is pretty cut and dry when it comes to your condition. You have a history of pneumos.

It isn't going to hurt you to wait two years to enlist. There will still be plenty of people to kill and you will still have plenty of time to serve. My advice to you is to continue to do PT, stop blaming others for you drawing a short stick at this time, get a job, go to college and in two years, or better yet AFTER you graduate college, if you havent had any other troubles with Pneumo's enlist at that time.

In the mean time, do alot of reading here.

Best of luck.

I admire your dedication, but I do not want you with me on a mountaintop in Afghanistan in the middle of a firefight and 20 hours from Duke when your lungs deflate again. I am sorry, but it appears that you have a condition which is contradictory to military service.

If you do some searching and reading, you will see that this has been beaten to death here by a number of people with a variety of physical defects that preclude their service in SF, or in the military.

How many buddies do you think should die in the efforts to get you out and back to an area where you can be treated? You could probably add mission failure to your tab, as well.

If the Rangers will let you in with the problems you have, they are more desperate for warm bodies than I thought.

Take Crip's advice. Do PT, find a job where you will learn something, or just stay in school, and wait till the time is up. You will do no one any good by putting your team mates lives at risk, and your condition could recur. I would thank you for doing this, as I am sure they would as well.

Best of luck.

Welcome all!

I completely understand where you are coming from and I realize why you see things the way you do.

The docs labeled my pneumothoraxes as Spontaneous, however, what I was doing when they happened I consider traumatic. I held my breath to the point that I couldn't breath and strained at the same time while doing an exercise to build more endurance to hold my breath longer underwater. I felt the pneumothorax pain then, which happened in 06, I don't even remember the month. I didn't know I had a collapsed lung at the time, but when I did realize that it had collapsed and recognized the familiary pain, I knew it was a pneumothorax. I can say that I had it well over a year before I even realized what was wrong. The docs labeled it as Spontaneous, but I know in my heart what I was doing when it happened and it didn't "just happen" for the hell of it.

I have been in top notch shape my entire life. I have been doing gymnastics my entire life along with heavy PT workouts.

Shit happens, you can't stop just because something happens. You gotta pick your ass up and keep driving forward.

Anyone who is medically qualified knows that the majority of people who get pneumothoraxes are tall, thin VERY healthy men. I fit the profile considering I am 5'8 and only weigh 116 pounds. I am underweight, I am supposed to weigh 125 at my height and I do all that I can to reach my "supposed to weight." I should eat more than I do and sleep more than I do because it wear and tears on my body. It is something I need to work on.

I am sure you have heard of Paul Howe, a former Special Operations soldier who served in Somalia. He got denied his first time for enlistment because he had a mild case of asthma. Lucky for him, he joined at a time where people were blessed off and based more on their capabilities and not so much on a regulation. He knew that he could do it and he ended up being one of the best soldiers to ever serve in the U.S. Army.

The youngest Marine to ever receive the Medal of Honor lied because of his age. He was at Iwo Jima. I consider lying to MEPS to be a wrong thing, which is why I told what happened, but in this day and time, doing the right thing is doing the wrong thing. People can continue this negative and demoralizing mindset all they want, but I am going to keep my "common good will" mindset because that's what makes an unconventional unit so tight and close, being able to trust each other and doing the right thing.

Again, I completely understand where you are coming from, however, people should be based on their true capabilities and on a case by case basis, not by a piece of paper by some admin who has never experienced it before. As long as the process continues having this attitude, we will continue to get undedicated soldiers who will aspire for rank, but don't have the responsibility to take that rank and they are going to lead a group of men into combat. Sad, but true.

I disagree completely.

The opinion of the doctors and experts the Army hires to write the regs and set the standards do, and should count far more than your personal desires and wishes. This is spoken as someone who has lost people to injuries (some pre-existing) and had to drive on with the mission without them.

One lesson that we have failed to learn in this country is that actions have consequences, and that no really does means no.

Note that you are dealing with a situation you created, and are in a three year penalty box, which is imposed on everyone who has experienced what you have. That seems fair enough to me. Get better, get in shape, and wait your turn. This war is not going anywhere.

I have humped rucks bigger then you for many miles, but I do not want to ever have to decide between carrying you, or the team gear we need to accomplish our mission. At 116, or even 125, I really doubt your long term viability and ability to carry the loads for the distances that we require. That alone could induce respiratory problems for you. The general rule of thumb is 1/3 of your body weight for optimal loading, 1/2 at max for short distances. An average infantryman in Iraq is humping more than 120 lbs. of lightweight gear, every day. The Ranger and SF are carrying more. Strap that on and go for a walk sometime. What weapon, ammo, or team gear should we be carrying for you? The fact that you cannot hump that weight does not make you a bad person, any more than not being able to have a baby makes you deficient in some way. It is biological, and you have to learn to live with it.

BTW, PM me with what you would like for a new user name. We do not live in the future here, just the present.

Hello All,

After seeing the beginnings of me losing hold on the reins of my life, I joined the Army 16 months ago. Being that I never really thought about it before this point, I decided to be a Commo guy, 25B(Nice desk job, with plenty of AC). None the less, I knew joining the military would put my life back on track and get me to where myself and my family needed to be much faster than any other route.

Now, after being in for a little while, and doing my own research(Online and speaking with SF personnel/former SF personnel, for I am stationed in Stuttgart, Germany very close to 10th Group), I have decided that I would like to try the getting into the Special Forces. I see myself as having the drive and ability, and others see me the same. HOPEFULLY, if all goes as planned, by the 1st of February I will be a SPC and will be able to leave for Selections. I have already spoken with the local SF recruiter, and have begun training (A few of the NCO's in my unit have implimented an SF PT program based off of the training book we recieved from the recruiter, and our 1SG approved us doing this workout in place of normal daily PT)and working on my packet/physical.

I am not a Specail Forces soldier, however I do believe in the mindset and way of life. I agree with the way SF trains and fights.

About myself......keep the laughter down boys...;I am in the MO Army National Guard and I serve on the newly formed SRT. I also work as a Patrolman for a municipality in the State of MO. I am a member of the depatments SWAT team and double as the instructor.

I wont bore you with stories of how I want to be SF and think I might try to be. Seams like everywhere I go I run inot those guys. It is in my opinion that the SF has brought so much to the SWAT table and we still have tone to learn from you guys. Keep up the good work and stay safe.

Just found this forum. Plan on lurking much more before I post anything besides this intro. I'm a cadet at the Johns Hopkins University. I've attended Airborne, LTC, and will be attending CTLT this summer as well as LDAC. Can't wait to read all the posts on here, this is a great resource. Thanks.

Hello MOMF

Your message struck a chord when I read it. Sounded familiar.

I was hell bent on getting out of the army once upon a time. Needed something more and my senseless existence just wasn't cutting it... Going to the motor pool and PMCSing the vehicles that never moved several times a week, etc...

My 1SG was a former SFer in Nam and decided to "rescue" me one day. Not sure why but he did. He started telling me about a place where things were different... He didn't sugar coat it though. Said it was a challange, said there were dirt bags there too and sometimes even some political BS. But he said he would still be there if his body allowed it (got a profile for something or another).

Then he got the recruiters to come talk to me one day...

I agreed and off I went. They didn't have SFAS then, used Phase 1 for that. Then 2 and 3. I did my best and made it through... Then the true test. What was it like in an SF Unit.

All thoughts of leaving the army were buried 6 months later. Was it perfect? No, there was some BS and such... But it was FUN. Even when it sucked it was FUN. Garrison was always where it sucked. Deployed was the place to be and you were there with a quality of people you will never see again when you finally retire.

I miss the team. I have been retired now 10 years and I realize that those were the best people I have ever worked with, hands down. I consider it a positive break when I work with a former SFer now days.

It can be hard on marriages too though. Your wife needs to understand what is coming. Because SF is about being deployed.

But from what I have seen good marriages became stronger and shaky ones, well, shook apart. (Mine was shaky I guess...)

Good luck to you

Al

Professional Soldiers ® Bulletin Board Rules

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All new members will be placed in a 24 hour reading only status. All new Quiet Professionals and others with good cause may request an exception to policy waiver from an Admin. Hopefully, that time will be put to good use searching, reading, and learning the rules, as well as acquiring decent Situational Awareness (SA) for the board. After 24 hours, new members will be promoted and will be able to post. An introduction would be a good way to start. (see Below)

Professional Soldiers ® Bulletin Board Rules:

1. We encourage new members to observe a forum before posting, which will avoid interrupting the tenor of a thread or a forum with inappropriate or irrelevant information. We also encourage the new member to use the board’s search options before starting a new thread which might be an inappropriate repeat of a subject that has already been covered.

2. Fill out your profile.

If you desire to engage a Quiet Professional in a discussion concerning issues you find interesting it is essential you fill out your profile. The Quiet Professionals are interested in knowing with whom they're discussing global terrorism before they post a reply. While you need not submit your birthday, a year of birth helps.

3. Introduce yourself with your first post. Here!

When you come into our house we'd like to know a little about you. This assists in the framing of a response from a Professional Soldiers ® member.

4. No verbal attacks, flaming etc. Verbal assaults on a member of Professional Soldiers ® will result in a warning and/or immediate banning from the bulletin board. Likewise a malicious verbal assault on a Quiet Professional will result in amusing the other Quiet Professionals and a possible banning by the board administrators.

5. Posting pictures: All posted pictures should be relevant to the thread they're being posted in. The posting of nudity will not be tolerated and will result in an immediate removal from the Professional Soldiers ® forums along with the poster.

6. Advertisements must first be approved by Professional Soldiers' ® Staff before posting. URLs in the signature line are not permitted. A link in a post is permitted as long as the link is relevant to the thread.

7. Think before you post. Post something unintelligent and we’ll let you know. Post something unintelligent twice and you’ll be gone. We ask no quarter and none will be given.

8. Use the search button. We are asked many of the same questions time and time again. The first time one asks a redundant question he/she will be warned, the second time might result in a banning.

9. Professional Soldiers' ® Staff reserves the right to edit, move, delete and/or ban anyone at anytime for any reason.

10. Individuals under the age of 17 are not encouraged to post. Individuals under the age of 14 are not permitted to register.

ProfessionalSoldiers.com is owned and operated by Quiet Professionals. While all moderators may not be Quiet Professionals all of the administrators are and all have zero tolerance for foolish or troublesome members. Professional Soldiers' ® moderators have the total support of board administrators and Quiet Professionals. Any verbal assault on a PS moderator will not be viewed as amusing and will be dealt with unsympathetically by the board administrators.

Stupidity is not an excuse.

Greetings and salutations! My name is Bobby D. S. I am a retired CW3, MOS 180A. HALO qualified, Korean linguist (3/3), now retired to a small horse ranch in North Central Arkansas. I've been out of pocket for some time now but was happy to recently have run across this web site. It is very well done and exactly what I would expect of Special Forces Soldiers. Before leaving Bragg in 1993 for JRTC, I was the Warrant Officer Manager, MOS 180A, and worked under BG Dick Potter in the development of Special Forces Selection and Assessment. I was also the briefing officer for MG Dave Barrato, CG USAJFKSWCS, and BG Harley Davis, for Special Forces as a Branch.
It is good to be among men I love the most, Special Forces Soldiers. I salute you all, presently serving and those that have passed. If I can be of any assistance please ask.

I am 28 years old and live in Phoenix, AZ. While working as a barista in 2006, I tried out for the 19th Group Special Forces Safari. After passing the Safari, I moved to California in January 2007 and enlisted in the California National Guard. While awaiting my September 18, 2007, start date for Basic Training, I worked as a construction foreman, reporting to Guy. After finishing Basic Training in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, I subsequently completed AIT training as a 68 Whiskey at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. I am now back in Phoenix, AZ, and am interested in learning more about the 18 Delta course and will continue to train and pursue my goal as a Professional Soldier. I would appreciate any insight or guidance on training techniques to help me achieve this goal.

Your original introduction was quietly moved to the Introductions III thread where it belonged. Obviously you couldn't take the hint the first time. We don't do seperate threads for every newbie. Read the stickies and follow the instructions included in your welcome message. Peregrino

If you are seriously considering attending 18D training, bone up on your math. Know the metric system inside out and be prepared to WORK! Steel yourself to the fact that you should only get 4-6 hours sleep each night and that your work must be flawless. When I attended the 18D didactic phase only half the men I went with graduated. Surgical phase at Med Lab was no different. You will have to be spot on in all areas of medicine; surgical, lab, nursing, pharmacy, etc. I recall one day during Med Lab that I saw a really good medic doing the duffle bag drag toward the front gate. When I asked an instructor why such a good medic was getting the boot he replied: he is a good medic in nearly every area of medicine, but a Special Forces Medic must be great in all areas of medicine.

Good luck

Gentlemen,

I wanted to thank you for setting up this website, and those that regularly contribute to it. It has been quite useful for me, and I appreciate the time many Special Forces soldiers, present and past, put into helping to inform potential candidates and others simply interested.

Basic Info about me - I am 23, and relentless in my goal of making a positive difference in this world before I reach 30, which I recognize is probably my greatest strength and greatest weakness. I currently reside in London, where I am completing a Masters in Public Policy and Administration at the London School of Economics and also work for a Member of Parliament at the House of Commons. I previously graduated from the University of Michigan (’07) with a B.A. triple majoring in Political Science, Organizational Studies, and Arabic. During my undergraduate studies, I served at various levels of student government at Michigan and studied abroad in Cairo, Egypt for 7 months. I also served as a research assistant on a program funded by USAF researching terrorism. I believe my background may be useful as an army officer in today's globalized world, where it is necessary to account for state security, non-state actors and external political/religious/social/cultural events and influences.

In the next three months, I’ll be making a decision between going to OCS slotted as an MI officer attached to a Special Forces National Guard group or as an MI officer attached to a Civil Affairs Battalion. The opportunities allow me to make my impact in OIF or OEF in unique ways, and offer different lines for growth and training. I have read the previous threads on preparing to become an 18A, and I’ll continue to keep up with developments there, and in other places on this website regarding this decision. I am leaning towards going MI in CA, and hoping to fastrack to CA officer. Then, depending on if I see myself sticking around the military for a while, maybe take a shot at assessment for 18A’s. I’ll be around if anyone wants to contact me on this issue, or provide their 2 cents.

Hello,

I've been lurking for a long while now and I hope I have a good enough idea about how things work around here to start posting (namely, follow the simple instructions and don't be stupid). My name's Kevin and I'm an Infantryman over at Fort Hood, TX - originally from Portland, OR. Gearing up for an Afghanistan deployment late next month (it'll be my first overseas "all-expenses-paid business trip" in the Army). When I return from my deployment I intend on trying out for SF, which was my motivation in joining the Army in the first place.

I've found a ton of good stuff just browsing through past forum entries, specifically about how a modern-day warrior should act and think. I've also found some great PT tips, and very much appreciated the threads on what kind of gear would be good to take on deployment.

Anyway, thanks again for the wealth of information you already have tucked away in this forum!

Hi all. I'm Kevin, recently at a job fair at my local community college I was approached by a recruiter and was told about the 18x contract. I started looking around for more answers, I was originally skeptical about such a contract and thought of it as a ploy, but the more I read about it the more I became interested. I know there's a lot more than having a contract, one has to perform to the levels expected and I want to find out how I can get to such a level, both physically and mentally. Thanks for this site, it really is helpful and very insightful.

11B, just graduated from OSUT about a week ago and had a blast. I graduated from Ohio State with a BA in Journalism so I went through as an E-4. The amount of training I got was so much more than anything I could have imagined. It's definitely far from "basic."

I joined the NG to go to Iraq with my brother but got stuck in the DEP so I missed deploying with him. Now I'm seriously considering active duty. I went up to my recruiters office a couple days after I got home to say thanks and just to say hey and he told me 19th Group had a company in Columbus, OH and then called a guy he knows on one of the teams. We talked and he made it sound like my sort of thing I'm interested in.

I learned a lot in Benning, but I feel like there is so much more to learn and I don't want to waste anymore time. Not doing it everyday makes me feel like I'm missing out. And I miss the PT every morning. I enlisted at about 245 lbs, shipped out at 221 and got home weighing about 185. Suffice to say I love what the Army's done for me.

I found this site about 4 months ago as I was researching what to expect at OSUT. Some outstanding information here that I'm sure I'll continue to learn from.

Hello,

I'm Ed. Retired after over 33 years service. Joined the army in '69 to be in SF. (Influenced by the book, the song, and the movie :) ) Became a SF medic (91B4S) early in '70 and was assigned to the 6th SFGA at Bragg. Became a member of the 5th SFGA, again at Bragg. ETSed and joined the 5/19th SFGA in Colorado. Went to the Benning School for Boys (OCS) followed by SF Officer's Course. (Good story here for later as deemed appropriate.) Spent 11 years in CO Guard as "M" day soldier then went AGR. Last two assignments were at USASOC before retiring in 2002. Been working at USASOC since then. I'll keep looking around and see what I can contribute for the greater good.

Gentlemen,

I'm here to extract as much information as I can prior to taking off for SFAS. I have a bunch of old battle buddies that are wearing the green nasty, one who's a instructor at Camp Mackall phase II small unit tactics. I am a little bored babysitting and want to cut the chit out and get the job done. So I have been wanting to go SF for some time now.
Right now I am a 11B Polar Bear at 10th mtn. Div. with a concrete wall of stateside deployments comming up such as West Point, EIB, JRTC and NTC. During all of this I have to try and train up and get my packet submitted. I completed my briefing and physicals now I just need to boost my GT 5 points hence I have the same score that I had before I did basic. Other than that I have a lovely "very supportive strong" wife with 2 boys and 2 girls and some questions mainly reguarding something that works as a good physical train-up.

Thank you for the time!

Sgt.Holmberg,
Out.

My name is Joe and I graduated SFAS 05-08, currently awaiting airborne school.

My current MOS is a 19D, and I was deployed to FOB Normandy, Iraq 10/06 to 12/07. I served as a designated marksmen, small kill team squad leader, humvee gunner, and bradley gunner. During my deployment I was award an ARCOM w/ V device for taking out a key al-qaida leader, IED emplacer, repelling an enemy attack to overrun my team's position, and identifying an enemy sniper position and guiding CAS to eliminate the threat.

I spent some time with the ODA at FOB Normandy receiving marksmanship training and also accompanied an ODA on a rescue mission for an American POW. All of which turned me on to Special Forces, along with a desire to be the best and fight with the best.

I have been studying these forums for awhile now, and I am utterly humbled by the experiences and advice by the professionals in this community.

Mine happed to be lying around and it got confiscated.

I gave up trying to remember passwords and opened new accounts. My team just got back from 10 months down south on a 7th group rotation. The mission went well, but the tour was harder than I could ever imagine. (I would much rather deal with insurgents than hot latin split tail)

The company is at Bragg now and will be there until after the 4th of July. We will be busy with refit and recovery, but if anyone want to get together for a brew just give me a shout.

My computer craped out on during OEF and I lost all my passwords and usernames that I had archived on a thumbdrive b/c some idiot on bagram comprised some classified and they disabled all the usp ports and banned thumbdrives.

Arrange a PM/exchange bona fides with one of the Admins and we'll see what we can do about restoring the previous profile (if you still want it). Nothing like riding herd on an ODA with long-haired dictionaries to provide distractions.

11B, 12 years and still going, tours in 3 different zones. I've met many that made a difference in my life and hope to have made a difference myself.

I joined the Army to fight for freedom, to defend innocents, to be a warrior, to lead warriors, to destroy evil, to learn what I am made of, to make a better future...

I did not join to get promoted, to belittle others, to satisfy my ego, to escape the life I made for myself, to not improve myself, to make excuses, to not have responsibility...

I have enjoyed reading this forum and hope to make a decent contribution here and there.

Thank you.

Hello,

I own Randall's Adventure & Training (RAT). I've never served in the military but we (RAT) have worked pretty closely with the Special Operations Community when it comes to knife designs and gear. A great friend of mine, Bill Harsey Jr., invited me to join this forum.

Background:

We've been running a jungle survival school in Peru since 1997. Part of those years we worked alongside and teamed up with the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) Special Operations in our schools.

We have designed working knives since 1997 as well, starting with the RTAK and moving on into other models, some of which have NSNs. After spending 5 years exclusively designing for Ontario Knife Company, we set out on our own and now own RAT Cutlery Company.

So, our background is in jungle and knives. I'm looking forward to being part of this forum and hopefully I will have something to contribute along the way.

In closing let me say we truly appreciate all that you guys do.

Best regards,

Jeff Randall

After much reading I have finally mustered the courage to post an intro. My name is Lee and I am a Deputy Sheriff currently assigned to the Terrorism Division. I have 2 reasons for posting an intro. First, the obvious to introduce myself and second to thank you all for what you do. I am 32 years old and 3 weeks ago I found out for the first time that my father was part of the SF community. Not Army SF but SAS.... How did I find out? Helping my mother pack her stuff to move. I happened to come across a picture of my dad in uniform holding me as an infant. I always knew he served in England but I he never talked about what he did or what his job was. He always told me his job was being a soldier. I showed my father the picture and after a long conversation finally found out he was SAS. I asked him why he never told me and he said, "I did it because it's what I loved. I never told you because I didn't want you to feel obligated to try SF here in America. SF is not for everybody and I barely made it." So, with that thank you all not just for your service but for what you have endured to get to where you are. I don't know if I'm posting in the right place and I'm sure you all will let me know if don't. Regardless I want to say thank you!

Hello all..

My name is Roy and I'm 22 years old...

I'm not sure if I should pour my heart out in this post or not, so I figured I'd just introduce myself first and start a new thread elsewhere.

The reason why I am here however, is to further my knowledge on a life-long dream of mine: to be a Special Forces soldier in the greatest military in the world. Currently I feel my life has reached a crucial decision making point. I am certain that the information I will obtain from speaking with the members of this forum will truly impact my life forever...

I look forward most to learning about the fine print; from the people who know it like the back of their hand...

hello, My name is Carlos. I've been in the army/Bragg for 4 years now. I am trying to get all the information i can about sf before i make a decision. I am tired of working with people that are just here collecting a paycheck. I want to do something that is challenging and has alot more camaraderie. I am pretty much sold on the idea of going, but my wife doesn't think so. its not like I'm tricking her into letting me go or anything. but this is what i have to do. i just have to have a better reason other than "cause its bad ass". i want to make a informed decision. i want to include her in that decision. this site along with all the books I'm reading will help me do that.

Hello, my name is Steven Dxxxxxx. I signed an 18X contract on 12 MAY and I am currently in DEP. My ship date is 13 AUG. I entered the 18X program because it has been my dream to be a Special Forces soldier since I was young. I went to college for two years where I studied Criminal Justice. But my desire to be SF would not go away, so I went to Georgia and allowed my uncle to recruit me. I have a wife who supports my decision 100% and I am expecting a daughter at any time. My goal is to be completely prepared and reading other SF soldiers’ experiences will really help me out and give me a better understanding of the road ahead and how to better prepare myself.

My name is Ray and I am a member of the KSARNG. I spent 5 1/2 years enlisted as a Cannon FDC specialist, and these last 4 years as an Infantry Officer. I am Ranger qualified, but still dirty and nasty. I did my tour in Iraq as a PL, and now I'm a Company XO. I am interested in joining the ranks of the SF, and as I am in the Guard, I am especially interested in the NG SF experience. I humbly request a PM from a QP, preferably in the COARNG, at your leisure, about past and present activities (my wife was excited, now scared, and I have some explaining to do). Thank you

I have been quiet here; listening and learning for a little while. But, I was recently reminded that I had no profile, so I added that to the site today. I found this site while doing some research on knives after discussing the topic with my son-in-law who is serving in the 101st at Fort Campbell, and has completed 2 tours in Iraq. While I have not personally served, and now later in life I regret the missed opportunity, I do my best to directly support the solder in my family, and indirectly wherever I find the opportunity. I originally became interested in Special Forces activities for the outward appearances of skill sets, gear, etc. However, I am now more intrigued by the mental rigor and deliberative thinking of those that are the likes of this group.

I thank you for the opportunity to be a small part of this organization.

I'm looking foward to get updated and if possible to contribute with my knowledge in jungle ops, I understand that todays scenario it's all Sand and Rocks but you never know. I still well motivated and if you ever decided to come down to Puerto Rico, I will be your advisor or better said, your tour guide. You have a very informative site and some very helpful members. I am currently in the NG, but am seriously considering going active duty. Unfortunately that move will take me from 10 YIS to 3, but oh well. Before I even put too much thought into that I have to finish my current tour here at Pogadishu. You probably won't hear a whole lot out of me since all my questions have already been answered by this site, "Get Selected", or other research I've done. I still enjoy reading the posts, though. With that I will say thanks for letting me join this site and stay safe out there.

I am a retired commo sergeant, spent most of my time at Ft. Bragg or Panama. I have deployed to the former 1K Zone in the DDR, Honduras, Panama, Iraq 90 and 2004. Although I am not part of the Special Forces community, I do have some (underline that some) military 'experience' as an infantry officer in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve. I do read about the Special Forces whenever I can and am fascinated by it.
For some reason I have taken a great interest in survival skills and have made attempts to hone them. I enjoy the outdoors and have recently purchased new kit to allow me to pursue this activity. I hope that by reading the postings from this site and asking the right questions, I will gain new knowledge that will help me better my survival skills. Thank you.

I'm very interested in Latin America, and the area politics, and I want to continue to support those who choose to serve. I'm also becoming more conscious of lax child protection laws, and I've joined the Political Action Committee for children, "Protect" to hopefully remedy this situation. I think most people would agree allowing someone who rapes a baby to be on probation, and expecting a person capable of such behavior to report where they live is insane. I'm mostly here to find book recommendations, and insight from those who served in LATAM, particularly Sneaky, and Jimbo from Socnet. Thanks for the site, and your continued professionalism.

I'm a full time swat officer for a large metropolitan police department. I served in Iraq in a light infantry recon platoon as an assistant squad leader and sniper team leader. I joined this site because I am always seeking information from different sources on work related topics. I appreciate the opportunity to learn from a deep pool of experience here.

Hello everyone. Decided to join this site on recomendation of a friend about to start SFAS. I am currently a police officer in Indiana. I serve on my departments SWAT team as one of our Snipers. This site has been a great source of knowledge from experienced soldiers. Thanks for letting me participate.

I am Robert. I am currently in the US Army Reserve as a 96B Intel Analyst. I have been in the USAR for 3 months with 8 months of IET training before that.

I am a wrestler, and currently train with my coach and highschool team. I also have begun training in Submission Wrestling (Ju Jutsu) at a low level. I am very interested in hand to hand combat training and am available for any discussions on this subject as well as other subjects relevent to this forum and the military.

I am and always have been interested in Special Forces and being a Special Forces soldier. I am currently waiting on my 368 to get out of the Reserves and into active duty, only waiting on my next record PT Test in July.

I am currently talking to a recruiter about the 18X program and currently training and preparing for that career choice. I hope to be an 18B.

After much thought I decided that I wanted to make the leap to Special Forces, being an Intelligence Analyst is just not for me. To paraphrase a qoute on here from a QP "Combat arms is not about MOS, it is about attitude", this qoute is something that I agree with. Being a soldier and a warrior is something that I aspire to be and that is the only thing I feel that I will want to do with my life.

I have been lurking on this forum for the past few months and have gleaned a lot of information from the QPs and other posters.

I look forward to discussing topics in a professional manner with the members of this board.

hi everyone 11B/SSG in Iraq with 2-2 SCR (out of Vilseck GE.). First i want to say thanks for allowing me into your forum. Ive been reading the posts
here for about a month now... figure its time i introduce myself. It is awsome that i now have a resource like this to ask professionals questions
that will help me better myself as a soldier, and as a leader. I am coming from various line units where the training is marginal at best.
If you want training in these units you have to seek it out yourself, which is why i am here. I will try not to ask any stupid questions, plan on
doing mostly reading here anyway. I dont imagine i have much to contribute compared to the experience and professionalism of the other members on
this site. Thanx again for the opportunity. Enough BS lets get to training!

I was in the Army for almost 8 years with the last few years as a Cav Scout. I loved that job and have always wanted to go SF but was never "ready" in my eyes. Now that the years have passed and I've gained more experience and life lessons, its time to move my life in a better direction so I am currently signing up for the guard and in a few months hopefully will be in SOFC or SFAS. I joined this site on the advise from a 20th Group guy I know who's helping me get back in.

First off, I am glad to be part of this site. I really value the Quiet Professionals and their service. Down the road I plan to attend SFAS and take my shot at joining the long line and tradition of the Special Forces soldier.

I joined the Army in 2004. I attended OSUT at Fort Sill, OK and gained the MOS of 13-F Fire Support Specialist. I was stationed at Ft. Bragg, NC for about 6 months before I deployed to Iraq in 2005. At the end of my tour I was approved for a Green to Gold Scholarship. I am currently trying to finish up school and my ROTC program so I can receive my commission. When I return to Active Duty I want to become an Infantry Officer and become Ranger qualified. Hopefully everything pans out and I make it down the path I choose.

I have been involved in marksmanship and tactics training for my organization for 10 years. I am active duty, not Army SF. Not any SF, to be precise. I have been a few places and done a few things, nothing that is out of the ordinary for most here, so no reason to bore anyone. I have developed a few official courses and advised weapon selection/development.

I heard about this forum a few years ago, and recently saw it mentioned elsewhere, so I decided to jump in. I am here mostly to avoid developing content in a vaccume, and I appreciate other professionals who are willing to share experiences to assist other services. I am active on a few other boards, though under another name.

Thanks for having me in, will do my best to be an asset.

Hello, just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Jeremy, I'm 22, recently graduated college with my Bachelor's degree in English and have been considering joining the Army with an intent to try out for the Special Forces. I found this site and decided to do some research in trying to figure out if it was the right kind of goal for me to pursue and based on everyone's attitudes towards helping people in a serious manner I believe it is.

I probably won't post again for quite a while, since I have a lot of reading to be doing, but I hope you all have a good Independence Day. Hope to see you all around.

Peace,
Jeremy

I have since moved on to other interesting jobs in the military and have strayed from the SF community. I am still active duty, which would surprise most people, and I am always looking out for other members of the community that end up in my sphere of influence :D

Good Evening All. Name is Josh. Current enlistment from another branch is coming to an end soon, and I'm definitely going to join the Army after that. Wanted to join the Army and go for Special Forces since day one, and in the past 4.5 years, the more I learn about the Special Forces, the more excited and eager I get. Also the more I regret not doing it in the first place.
Right now I'm currently changing my workouts from crossfit and weights to crossfit and rucksacking. Also doing the APFT. My cousin said I better be able to get out there and do it after eating my bowl of Spaghettios.

Quick thanks to the SF members that have already helped me in getting to where I'm at now, and thanks to the members of this forum for the help and info that I'll obtain here.

My name is Sean King. I just happened across the site searching for some information on Harsey knives.

I am not special in any way shape or form....I have nothing to offer the site, so I figured (incorrectly) that no one would want me to post here as I'm not an expert on much of anything nor do I have any military experience other than my Father and Grandfathers being in the military.

I am interested in hunting, fishing, shooting, 4wheeling (quads and buggies), weight lifting, etc.....but I doubt that's of any interest to anyone here.

Sorry if I stepped on anyone's toes with my first post. I wasn't trying to be rude or a rule breaker.....I just honestly am in awe of the people on this site as well as their qualifications and service to our nation. While I am a huge admirer and fan, I am also very cognizant of the fact that I am a nobody and hope I am not wasting your time by posting here.

Thanks,

Good Afternoon Gentlemen,

My name is Jon and I have recently completed my sophomore year at Northeastern University in Boston, studying Civil Engineering. At school I am a member of the lacrosse team, Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, and Army ROTC. At the end of the summer I will be attending Air Assault School (Class 13-08) at Fort Campbell. Upon commissioning I hope to branch Infantry, serve my time as PL, and then submit my application to be selected for a chance at becoming a Special Forces officer.

With this being said I hope to make this my profession, not just a job. I look forward to gathering up every bit of information possible in my pursuit to become more knowledgeable in the trade, and becoming the best leader possible to my men. Thank you all for your service to this Country and its people.

Stop with the self-deprication, work to understand your unique and valuable abilities and potential to contribute to society, begin building your quiet self-confidence starting today, and don't ever forget to learn and follow the rules of any new environment you enter, on-line and in life. Ingratiating yourself garners the wrong kind of attention from the wrong kind of people.

What I was trying to convey (and must've done a bad job of it) was that I have nothing to offer in terms of tech advice (or even commentary) on this site as I have ZERO experience. I'd just be talking out of my backside if I did. I was trying to humbly admit this while acknowledging most folks here are deserving of all American's respect for the job they do.

I only joined to be able to send a PM to someone here asking a specific question about a purchase I'd like to make. When that question wasn't answered via PM, I made the mistake of asking publicly in a thread without first introducing myself (thinking no one would care since I have nothing to offer this type of site)....that was my mistake, and I've apologized for it.

Thank you for taking the time to write out that reply though. You are quite right....and it would be good advice to someone in a different situation (or the one you thought I was in).

Thanks,
Sean

Gentlemen, thanks for this great site. I have been enjoying the boards the past few weeks. It seems an interesting blend of opinions and knowledge.
During the "summer of love", at the age of 19, a civilian-to-SF program brought to me a brand new set of realities. Stress and strength, pride and humility. Discipline.
After SFQC, I had the priviledge of serving within 3 SF groups, meeting and working with some of the finest people I'll ever know. OCS at the ripe age of 32. Combat Diver at 34. ETS'd a Bn staff guy.
Thank you for having me in. Bill

27 years old, was in the army for 6 years with the 10th MTN as 11b. Iraq and afghanistan deployments. I am a fulltime firemen and I just graduated with a degree in nursing for a part time job since I work 72 off 24 on at the fire house. Now i work in an ER as a clinical nurse part time. I Got a wife and an ugly cat. I registered about 6 months ago while exploring the option of going back into the Army and see if SF wanted someone like me. Now that I graduated RN school, I am very much in turmoil on where I should head next with my career in medcine.

While I was in my deployments I had my EMT so when we went on mission I was looked to as the medic type guy. I did some amputations, well, finished what was started, gunshot wound care, and various other things with minimal knowledge. Hence, my reason I went to RN school when I got out of the army. I left with the intent of going back in when I was done with school to learn more so I could help fellow soldiers once again. I know though that being on regular line infatry squad is not what I wanted any more. I want to be something more, with a tight, cohesive, team of like minded people.

Anywho great information here and appreciate all the postings done by all of you.

Hello everyone. My name is Allen. I am currently serving in the U.S. Army. I came to this site following a recommendation from the book: "Get Selected for Special Forces" written by Major Joe Martin, with MSG Rex Dodson. I am attending SFAS in Oct 08. My main goal for this website is simply to get information. I find that it is easier to use a system that has served me well - when I get into the unknown, such as this site, it is best to keep my eyes and ears open, and my mouth shut.

That being said, I want to personally thank all of the QP's and anyone currently serving (SF or not) this country. Without all of you, this nation wouldn't exist.

If and when I do post(or reply), I will endeavor not to ask the same questions as those previously asked. I have been paying attention to The Reaper's posts and he is right, the search button is my friend.

Thanks for listening. Have a good one.

Hello to all,

I am a 25 year veteran of SF. I graduated the "Q" in 1983 (Class 3-83). I was assigned to 5th Group until 1st Group opened. I was in A-2-1 ODA146 from Aug 84 to Sep 88. I then went to SWTG and was one of the initial Cadre for SFAS or SFOT as it was called then. (I am the creator of the Sand Baggies), I was then moved to the Echo committee, then back to Camp MacKall in Phase 13. After that I went to C-1-1 ODA 133, From there I went to Group then to B-2-1 ODA 154, After that I spent 4 years at the Test Board, From there I went back to C-2-1 ODA 165 and the I went to C-1-1 as the Company Ops. I will be retired in Sep 08 with 26 years experience. My MOS's were 18B, 18E, 18F, 18Z. with alot of ASI and SQI's.

I am here to listen to the QP and others experienced men to gather some important informations about SF and things around. I am very interested in the SF generally. Our country (the Czech republic) is a true ally of USA in war on terror. Our soldiers from 601st Special forces Group conducted twice in combat operations against Taliban in AX together with US SF. Actually, US SF took place in international exercise FALCON 2008 in the Czech republic together with 601st SFG.

TS and those of us whose training preceded the SFAS POI--I think SFAS was what occurred when you were posted to your first team and they put you through their 'selection' phase. I knew guys who made it through SFTG but failed the 'team selection' phase of their training and were then sent packing to join the Eighty-Twice, Tilted Shithouse, 44th Med, 50th Signal, or 18th Airborne Carnival Corps. Sometimes they pulled their 'S' and sometimes they just sent them packing to get them the hell out of SF as quickly as possible.

Let me first and foremost say thank you for this board. It has proved to be one of the best resources for my self as a 18Xray (shipping 20080707). Next only to "Chosen Soldier" by Dick Couch and "Get Selected for [SF]" by Major Joe Martin and company. I began the informative phase of my joining back in 2003 while studying in China, and ever since that interest has multiplied till this point. Thankfully I waited because as a serious consideration, I was looking into the Marine Corp...primarily because of the importance placed on Physical preparedness. However I still maintained to work the 9 to 5 life style to see what that offered for a few years and learned most importantly that it does not suit my personality. I look forward to all the learning and challenges that face me in coming years.
Once again, I thank all of you who have served and struggled through this process I'm set to begin, and look forward to one day earning the "Professional" title.

I've made almost every mistake a guest to this board can make, and I've learned from them all and I understand more from them. My respect for the SF has increased ever more because of it, and I will comply with what is expected of me from now until whenever.

To other guests to PS, please, for your sake, read all stickies and rules before posting. This isn't a board for kids or immature people.

Hello all. My name is Zach xxxxxx and I'm 16 years of age. I love the Military and particularly the Army. A little history of my "pre-Military" experience thus far:

My high school has a program that was started 3 years ago - it's name is Delta. It stands for Dedication, Excellence, Leadership, Training, & Academics. It's an officially recognized program operated under the ARNG and is led by Major General Ike Pilot, former Mississippi Assistant State Adjutant. I've been in the program since it's beginnings, and I'm now it's CSM. We technically aren't populated enough for the current ranks to be legitimate in comparison to their real-world standings, but we're recruiting aggressively. So far, we've expanded the program into 2 different schools, and we're assisting another school this summer so as to prepare their new program for the upcoming school year.
We train all our cadets in D&C, Tactics, Physical Fitness, & General Military Knowledge. We recently held our 2nd annual "Delta Summer Trip" and learned a great deal in it's entirety. All cadets that attended were required to assemble, disassemble, and clean the standard Army M16A2, which all cadets successfully completed. We're also proud to say that we were trained in general weapons knowledge and use with the M16A2, M14, M1 Garand, BAR, M60, Thompson, & .30 Cal.

Anyways, please excuse the lengthy post but I'm trying to abide by the stickies and post some information about myself so that whoever I speak with won't be ignorant to whom they're speaking with. If anyone has any questions what-so-ever, feel free to ask!

De Opresso Liber!

Zach:

You assume too much, young Jedi. You are not a CSM, you are not Delta, you are not an 18E, and you probably shouldn't be using the SF motto as your own. Plenty of time for that later, after you have accomplished something and earned it.

I recommend that you not post again for several months, especially not to ask ridiculous questions, and that you let me know what you would like your new user ID to be, since you are not a future anything yet, and we explain that in the rules and stickies.

Best of luck.

Hello all,

My name is Greg Hxxxxxxx

I live in the Seattle area, former Ranger with 3rd batt. and RRD, then 12SFG, some IMA time, then some time off, and currently with A/1/19.

Hobbies: like everyone else on the board shooting! I climb a little when I have time, jump a couple times a year, very interested in military history, mostly WWII airborne (axis and allies) and Vietnam (LRRP, SOG, etc) of course some of you guys lived what I call history!

Look forward to learning from the old hands.

I originally joined PS.com as an excellent information source, you can learn a lot from just listening and using wikipedia, for the primary purpose of research for a tabletop RPG I play in weekly. However after lurking for several months and witnessing the candor that the moderation team and members here display I was intrigued to, as a wise elderly gentleman once said, “Stay awhile and listen”. I haven’t regretted it yet, every time I read about a news story on another site, I always come here to see what you all have to say, and it is always well tempered with common sense, a rare commodity on the internet to say the least. PS has also increased my respect for soldiers immensely and has made me seriously consider joining the military myself.

As for myself, I am a 23 year old construction worker from Longmont (a small city about 30 miles north of Denver). My interests are Computers, Photography(The Reaper once made a comment about how cool a shot of him in full kit jumping out of the back of a plane at night would be, I agree, some of the opportunities for images would be impressive with some QP’s around),Writing and finally Tabletop gaming. I am working on a Information Network Security degree, Id like to potentially work as a security penetration tester for a living. If any of you have questions that I might be able to answer or at least entertain in either of my areas of knowledge by all means send a PM.

Hello,
I have wanted to join the military since I was 15 years of age, but have been persuaded by friends and family to do otherwise. I have always had a feeling of service to the “oppressed” and a unusual amount of patriotism. However, my family and social network expected at least one college degree from me, and for me to grow up to be a reputable young professional. I went to college and got my bachelors, and was talked into the horror that is law school. I am currently surrounded my people whose only motivation is material wealth and seeing their name on the letterhead.

I have always felt that with time I would fit in with everybody else and chase the “white bread” American Dream. It has not happened, and I have had an immense feeling to do something in life with substance, and a career that I can truly be proud of. I have decided that best way for me to this, to help the oppressed, and forward American policy is SF.

I can speak and read Spanish at a fairly high level, and hope to be at a 3/3 by the end of the year. I plan on starting Arabic at the end of the summer, and want to have a fair grasp of it before I finish law school. I am a very active athlete and have just discovered the joy that is rucking. I have read everything from Sun Tzu to the Ranger Handbook and found it all fascinating. I have every intention of being as prepared both physically and mentally as I can be, for the challenges that lay ahead. My current plan is to finish law school, pass the bar, and then enlist as an 18x. I hope I have what it takes to one day serve with the best and the brightest.
Sorry for the long introduction, but it will be my only post before I go back to being the gray man. Thank you to everyone who serves this great country.

Hello everyone. My name is Nicholas Gomez. I'm 31 and am from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I am not in, and never was in the military but have always had a strong interest in military equipment, knives, firearms, etc. In high school I was a Police Cadet (most schools here have either Police, Army or Navy Cadet platoons - my school, Aminuddin Baki had Police). I joined because the uniforms & shoes were free. For Red Crescent/Boy Scouts you had to buy everything. After concentrating on automobiles/motorcycles for the past 10 years or so, the recent events around the world and the purchase of three military/survival knives and movies like Black Hawk Down have rekindled my interest in militaria. I hope to learn a lot about what's going on around the world through this forum, which looks like it is one of the better ones on the net. My sincere apologies if I go against protocol or make mistakes. Thanks for the opportunity to join. Regards, Nick

Hello,

I am already enlisted in the Army. I am a 68A (Medical Maintenance), and enjoy the hands on technical side of the job. I am currently at FSH, TX in a MED LOG CO. I have been in this unit for two years without deploying.

My age is 22. I am starting on my A.A.S. once that is finished (around a year) I am going to SFAS. I will get selected! I joined the Army simply because I wanted to. My neighbor who is a retired QP from the Vietnam era, told me story's that inspired me. My Dad provide the reasoning with signing up for the job I have.

Hello, I am 24 years old with a BS. I have gone though quite a bit of ROTC while in college but I did not commission as an officer. This does not mean that I have given up, rather that I will be seeking to further my experiences before I reshoot my azimuth in that direction. For now, I will do my best to find the answers to my questions before I further clutter your boards, but alas I am only human.

Hello everyone,

I recently enlisted in the 18x program (I ship to Benning the 13th of August) and while perusing the AKO forums somebody mentioned this forum and I just have to say thank you to all of you QPs who have provided such a wealth of information for all the could-bes coming down the pipe. Any question or topic that I've looked into I've found so many wonderful posts about. I also ordered the Get Selected book after reading all the great reviews, and am looking forward to the knowledge it is going to give me for selection. So again, thank you all SO MUCH for the help and extra confidence you've already given me in a short 72 hours. :) Been rucking, running, and training my butt off physically for the past few weeks (also using the 5-week program) and with all that plus the information here and in the book, I don't think I have much worry about not making it through SFAS. :lifter

Welcome.

Bonus points for a good positive attitude, but you might want to make it through SFAS before assuming too much.

There is a big reality check at the end of the bus ride to Camp MacKall.

Most of the class fails, and few set out with that intent.

There are a lot of ways to leave CMK, some you can prepare for, and some you cannot.

Best of luck.

Guess I could have worded myself a little differently. :) Thank you for the welcome and I look forward to reading more on the boards here.

MAC117,

Are you talking about our 1SG in 3rd SF Company? Your memory must be incredible. If it was actually him, I remember a talk he gave on not personally caring how we wore our hair etc., because the Isreali's didn't care and they were pretty good. He said it didn't matter because the Army said we had to get haircuts and shave. Good lesson. Were you there? He gave us Phase I dates and then asked who wanted to quit. Several hands.....

Also, if you were in my class you'll remember the Pre-Phase "gross-out" contest idiots.

Finally, I believe that glebo was in the same class.

Why yes I was! Remember the reserve/guard guy that got caught catching piss from a guy peeing off the fire escape?? I think they canned him IIRC. Along with some....not so other unmentionable stuff that went on!

Yes Fontana was the ISG then, along with Bo Gritz's kid who was in a leg cast I think. I think that was around pre-phase time, the commo guys spent their time in the code zone then.

I tried to reply to TR's response and correction. I must have not done something right because it obviously didn't post. I guess I'm not as computer literate as I thought. Here it is again, by way of introduction, this is Johnny R. Gomez, MSG (Retired). I retired in 1993 from B/2/7 (91-93) on B-750. I spent the remainder of my team time in 7th SFG in B/3/7 (74-76) on A-8, A/3/7 (80-85) on A-772, HHC 7th SFG working in the S-3 Shop. I graduated from SFTG in 1968. Blitzz was a classmate until he got his leg messed up playing full contact football (NO Pads!). I went to A Co 6th SFG after I graduated. I was pretty much a dead head, because the company SGM said that if he could keep me in the field it would make everybody pretty happy. My first team sergeant was SFC "Pappy" Hoskins. Other members of the team included Joe Murray and Greg McGuire. After A Co, I went to Co B 10th SFG (70-73) on A-16. The team sergeant was David Smith, and other team characters were Danny Fowler, Joe Hannon, Sherman Jordan, Michael Moore, Bill Remine. I was also in B/2/10 (78-80) on A-225. I was team sergeant (as a brand new E-7) for A-222 for a little while (1979) until they found an MSG to take the team, then I went back to A-225. I was the B-team operations sergeant for for B/2/7.
I hope that this is an adequate introduction. Mgrayfox sends!

I am new to your site. I live in the Peoples Republic of Austin TX! I have learned a lot the past few days. I am very interested in joing SF on a Rep 63. I guess..I am a little late to the fight but better late than never.
My Uncle was drafted into Vietnam and my dad and 2 of his brothers stayed out becuase of college. So I looked deeper into my family and found out that both my grandfathers didnt serve in WWII either. While others lied about there age to join my family sat on the sidelines!
So I have decided to possibly giving it shot! I just bought "Get Selected", "Chosen Soldier" and "To be a Green Beret".
My goal is to finally have someone from my family fight for what some many others have died for in the past.

I wanted to thank you all for your service!!

Hello, my name is Nathan, and I am from Texas. I would first like to say that I am honored to be a member of this extremely informative website. I am currently a High School graduate with a strong desire of becoming a part of Special Forces. Even though my knee is currently injured, I continue to do as much PT that doesn't require the use of my knee. Once the doctor gives me the OK, I will start using my ruck sack again. When I am ready I will join the Army with the 18x contract. I hope this introduction will help give this website's members a better understanding of who I am. I intend to post more when the desire arises. Until then I will continue to keep my mouth shut and just listen/read. If I say anything unintelligent, please feel free to call me on it. I will finish by saying thanks for having me and have a great day.

My name is Michael Leigh and I am a prior service combat engineer. I am currently 33, and living in Austin, TX. Prior to going on active duty as a combat engineer I was a part of the 19th Special Forces group and was a party of their pre-sfas team for about a year while attending college at Fairmont State, WV. I did attend their Pre-SFAS program in 1993, so if you were Camp Williams, Utah for the A.T. at this time I was one of the guys getting smoked and doing the Fred Sanford shuffle. As fate would have it my father got my grades (girls and booze took precedence over books and teachers at 19) about the time I was finishing the Sand Babies and I was officially cut off financially. At the recommendation of my teammates I went active duty. Life quickly got in the way as my daughter was born at the end of my first contract obligation and I made the decision to get out and go back to school in 1996. I ended up getting masters degree and started working in civilian Information Operations which I have done for about 10-years now. Yet a day doesn’t go by that I think about my missed opportunity and the guys I served with at the 19th group. Therefore I have made the decision to try to through my hat in the ring again. I have contacted my recruited and have started the venture for going back into the National Guard with the hopes to go through OCS, IOBC and SFAS. That is as far as I am going to plan out, as I do not want to get ahead of myself. I do have some preliminary work ahead of me as my feet are not in shape to be doing the Sandman or any of the grueling timed humps. Physically I feel I am all right except I am recovering from a broken wrist (Warning: If you enjoy Mixed Martial Arts make sure that if anyone leaves the cage that they lock the cage door). My hobbies are martial arts, working out, poker and offensive Information Operations. I hold belts in Tang Soo Do, Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I also practice Kali and Muay Thai.

Therefore yes I am making a declaration that I am willing to give up my cushy life in corporate America to go through some hell (which I truly enjoy) to regain a sense of pride and accomplishment. I know I will do fine in selection as where there is preparation there is no hesitation. My goal is to be in the pipeline within a month or two (wrist and MEPS permitting). I took a PT test this morning and on a broken wrist I score about 240 for 18-21 year old standard. So I figure with two months to be in the pipeline, OCS and IOBC I will be physically ready and a higher APFT score. As for mentally ready I am always a fairly confident person, but I am taking inspiration from a Niche quote I picked up out of ‘Man’s search for meaning’, “If we have our own why in life, we shall get along with almost any how”. Therefore those of you in the pipeline keep your heads up and stay focused on your goal. Those of you how are wearing the long tab thank you for your inspiration and your testament to providing foundations for success. Enough with the novella. Hope to speak with you all soon.

Greetings to all. I graduated from the Q course in 1978 as weapons specialist and within the same year the commo course. I served on the same team from March 1978 till Dec 1980 in 5th SF. Then transfered to 7th Group Panama until 1984 when assigned to SWC as a commo, phase III instructor til 1987. Then back to 7th Group until I retired in 1994. Look forward to talking to old friends. Lost in KY.

Greetings to all,

By way of introduction my name is Bob R and its a pleasure to be able to read so much good information all in one place instead of trying to glean if from the often useless search function on AKO.

Some background on myself, I started out as an Army Engineer (then 51B now 21W) Carpenter/Mason some 14 years ago. Then decided I was tired of dealing with camo nets and concertina wire and switched over to become a Preventive Medicine Specialist (then 91S now 68S). I've spent all but about 4 years of the past 14 at overseas postings. I'm finally back on sovereign U.S. after a 6 year stint in Japan. I'm assigned now with the soon to be activated 4th Battalion of the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

What I'm here for is any garrison/downrange experiences that other support folks or Operators have that I can use to help out the Soldiers in my BN. As well as any information that other Preventive Medicine NCO's have to offer.,

Thanks,

Bob R

Hello All:

As per instruction, my introduction. I spent four years in the Marine Corps spinning wrenches and mopping floors 20 years ago. I found this site while looking up information on Msgt Paul Howe's excellent book "Leadership & Training For The Fight" and a quick perusal of the site shows it to be a goldmine of knowledge in traning for civilian self-defense and disaster preparedness. Thank you for allowing those of us who have never been, nor ever will be, part of your community access to quality information in these arenas, and I look forward to learning much from you.

Hi, I am SSG K from Grafenwoehr, Germany. I was selected in class 05-08 and will be attending airborne school in October and starting Q course in November.

SSG K, I changed your screen name, if you're even thinking about going SF you don't need your real name on any public internet website..... Team Sergeant

I was in 7th SFG from 1987-1992 and participated in Op Just Cause/Promote Liberty. I have been in 3rd SFG since 2003. Injuries in 1988 prevented me from going to the course, so I remained a support puke. I am the NCOIC of the 2nd Bn, 3rd SFG EMS. After I left the 7th, I got caught up in the Forward Support Battalion vortex; went to Bosnia once and Kosovo twice. After 11 years, I finally found my way back to the SOF community and have been to Afghanistan three times. I have been sharing knowledge with 18Es since I got back to the SF community. I have FCC licenses in GMDSS and GROL with ship radar endorsements, I hold the title Master of Communications Technology from the National Radio Examiners, and am a Certified Electronics Technician. I look forward to being a useful contributor and could help with technical questions relating to radios and communications electronics.

Well I was turned onto the site after my brother's interest in my training, I love this country and everyone one who has the balls to pick up their weapon when the country comes calling. I owned my own business before I came in and at the ripe age of 26 I joined and earned my tab, that I wear proudly. I also like to read about the poser's on this site and how you guys put them in their place. Nice to meet everyone here, and look forward to gaining some tools for the toolbox(no, I'm not a toolbox)!

I am back after a 3 year absence...my son passed selection in June 05 and soon after decided he wanted some regular army experience. He was assigned to 1st Cav and deployed with them to NW Baghdad for 15 months. He returned and put in his packet to return to SF - missed the (3 yr) deadline by a few days - so he is going back to Selection next month. I'm here mainly to read and learn and be able to support him the best I can. He is a much stronger and better prepared person than he was 3 years ago and I know he will give it his best.

Greetings to all.
My name is Ed Powers and I am an active duty SSgt in the USMC. Presently, I am the Scout/Sniper platoon sergeant of my battalion. I have 11 years in The Corps, and due to the fact that as you pick up rank here, your billets tend to make you less of an 'operator', I am searching for new horizons and new challenges. SF is both of those and apparently much more. I have done extensive research over these last couple of months to include chatrooms, message boards and books (Masters of Chaos by Linda Robinson and Chosen Soldier by Dick Couch). I even made a visit to the SF recruiter on Schofield Barracks here on Hawaii, seeking any and all info I could get.

Anyway, I will be getting out of The Corps in Dec of 2010 and plan on enlisting in the Army. Seeing as I will be 30 years old when I get out, I will not be eligeble for the 18X program, so therefore I am planning on signing up for something in the Intel field, such as perhaps CI or PsyOps. From there I will drop my SF package ASAP. My first inclination was to head towards Rangers and THEN to SF, but after looking into it more deeply, this does not seem the way to go. Any thoughts on that? I definitely want Ranger School at some point, though. Kind of frustrating that I barely missed the age cut off for 18X, but so be it. I will do what it takes.

Looking forward to utilizing the site, gentlemen. Have a good one.
