jmhcr66 - I don't believe NDD was emphatic enough. You need to figure out your priorities. Right now your "wants" are mutually exclusive. But then it's your life. Just don't expect to have your cake and eat it too. Back to your regularly scheduled topic - this is the Intro Thread. If you want more advice/abuse find the right forum to post it in. Peregrino

The one and only priority in my life is to make it through the Q. I will take these words of advice, and not have any distractions while I am completing it. Thank you for the help. Once again, I apologize for posting this is the wrong area.

Welcome aboard SGM. I'm/we're glad TS and the guys finally persuaded you to stick your head in. FWIW - The SHOT Show rumors are flying thick & fast. I have it from reliable sources you were "the last man standing" (again - I still remember last year) and that you've got the goods on everybody. The rest of us are sorry we missed the action. Thank you for this wealth of knowledge. I have inquired into this site many times over the past year before realizing I should become a member. My father served in MACVSOG CCS, he instilled great values and sparked my interest into the special forces community. Thank you for the opportunity and insight into the minds of such great men.

Greetings All,

Thanks for having me,

I guess it all started with my old man in 68-70 draftee, Light weapons specialist 5th group 1/503rd 173rd(A).

I followed up in 2002 as an X-ray, joined the detachment NOV 2004 and am chilling in OEF on my second tour. So far so good and the end is in sight.

Wanna say thank you to all the great men that made the Regiment. Wrote the book in the jungles and all sorts of places that sucked away from family and friends and with no support from home. I thank my father everyday for what he did and do the same of all of you gentlemen as well.

Hello
I was referred here from another website. I am currently a master's student doing prelminary research for my thesis topic. I am interested in the early years of the 10th SFG, particularly from 1953-1961 while in Bad Toelz, Germany. I will continue to search the site before posting any questions I may have. Regretfully, I have never served in the military.

Hello,
My name is Joel, I'm 23 years old, out of college for a year, and will be signing an 18x contract in May. In the mean time, I'm busy prepping myself (mostly) phsyically and mentally. I'm 5'9", 150 lbs. Pt score of about 230 and working for 300.
I've been lurking around this site for about a month, observing and learning. I was a previous lurker at ar.com when I was interested in an Option 40. I soon realized that I would much rater be SF and found a good site to guide me on the right path.
I've learned a ton from GET SELECTED! by Maj. Martin and from all of the QP's on this site. Thanks for the time you spend in sharing your wisdom.

Hi,
I have been thinking about and training for SF for quite a bit of my college career. Over the past summer I met a professor from the NPS while waiting on him and his wife and chatted with him for a bit. Somehow we ended up talking SF and eventually that lead to him having an SF Major, a ret. SF Colonel, and a SEAL call and talk to me about SOF life. From that I have been put in touch with someone (obviously I am not putting real names up on the net) at Ft. Bragg who is a SF hero and he has the local recruiter taking care of what I need to do to sign up for 18X-ray.

The other half of my life is that I am a senior at college and will know where I stand with the medical schools I have applied to soon. Now in my heart I want to go SF, I just need to have a hard talk with the rents that I will be giving up a paid for ticket to medical school if I get in, which they think is nuts... and I could see why. I have talked with them a bit, but I think they are in denial. They are not anti army or anything, but they don't understand how I could want to give up a life of relative comfort for one with many more inherent dangers.

So thats where I am. Now I am training, up at 0530 before classes each day to run or sprint then hit the gym before my 0800 classes. Got back from a 20 mi. hike this weekend with 80 lbs in the ruck.

Also, as fate would have it my roommate for all 4 years of college who I was randomly paired with in the first year dreamed to be a SEAL, and was accepted to the Naval Academy, but then DQ'd for childhood asthma. He is also going to go SF if he can get through medically, since he has not suffered from asthma since he was under 13. He is getting doctors notes and such together for when we go to the physical soon.

Cheers,
-Dub

Hey, thanks for havin' me. Been looking around the site for a while and sucking up all the great info. Probably won't post much, as my experience is minimal, but thought I'd introduce myself anyway. I enlisted into the guard 4 years ago and took a commission into the aviation branch almost 2 years ago. I'm just getting finished with flight school (UH-60's) and think I have more to offer. After getting one of the first SERE level C classes here at Rucker I'll be home and going to Air Assault school this summer. I've always thought about SF and now I'm just putting together more info. At 32 I need to shit or get off the pot if I'm going to make a go at it, and next year would be the dsired year group to come in commissioned (05). Thought I'd see if anybody had advice or experience going to SF from AV. Thanks for providing the excellent resource.

Thank you for letting me join your site it has provided me with answers to my many SF questions. I have decided to pursue an active duty commission in the infantry with aim of one day becoming an SF soldier. While at New Mexico Military Institute I had a squadron leadership advisor who was a former Green Beret who spurred my interest. I have not fully explored your site so I will reframe from asking questions. If I am able to branch IN I am told my schools are as follows BCT>OCS>BOLCII>OBC>BAC>Ranger School. If anyone has any guidance or information on what my course of action should be to attend selection I would be very appreciative. Thank you, Richard

Wow, I knew the government spent a lot on the training for individuals but is it actually that high? My guess was conservative, like a few hundred thousand or so.

I'm more interested in learning than gobbing off, so I'll remain on mute unless I feel that there is something in my limited lane.

I'm 31, and have the following military experience:
1993-1999 Canadian Army, (2 years with the BC Dragoons and 4 years with the BC Regiment, both reserve units)
2000-2006 US Marines as a reservist with the 4th Light Armored Reconnaisance Battalion as a rifleman and LAV Crewman. I'm currently on IRR status.

My civilian employment is with a gear manufacturing company which focuses on the Canadian military and law enforcement market.

All-

Introduced to this site by a Quiet Professional. I am a NCO with 12 yrs TIS. Finally took the plunge and attended SFAS in SEP 06. Selected, I'll be heading to the Q in MAR 07 to qualify as an Echo. Really looking forward to it. I welcome advice from any Quiet Professional, especially in the topic of SUT. I'm already a 1/1/0+ Arabic Linguist (via SOLT), so I'm not terribly worried about that aspect of it. Look forward to learning a lot from this site!

My name is Larry Larimore. I am a tactical team commander for a police department just outside of Kansas City, MO. I have been a police officer for twenty years and a tactical team operator or commander for nineteen of those years. I was an entry team member/leader and sniper team member/leader on the operations side for most of my career. The last six years I have been the team commander.

In 2002, my team joined a regional tactical team formed to respond to WMD/Terrorism incidents in the Kansas City area. We are funded by federal Urban Area Security Initiative and state homeland security grants. I am currently the senior commander on this regional team and the logistics committee chairman. It is my resposiblity to procure the various equipment needed to do our job in this new threat arena.

I found this website while searching for mounting solutions for PVS 22 scope I recently purchased.

I have no past military experience. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

To the Quiet Professionals and all our members in uniform, past and present, thank you for your service.

You men (and women) are in my thoughts daily and always present in my prayers.

I found this site via Socnet.com while searching for information regarding Special Forces and other Special Operations units. I lurked for a brief period here and joined shortly thereafter, back during the recent holidays. I have only delayed my introduction to get a feel for the site, and get some SA regarding posting on this site.

My only credentials are that, I am a college graduate and work in the private sector. I wish only to spend my time here researching topics of interest, increasing my knowledge, and only asking a question if I have exhausted the search function or that of google.

Already, I have found endless amounts of information and answers to my questions. Your site is very useful and thank you very much for the resources that are provided here.

I am in the National Guard. As soon as I get back from my current deployment I plan on meeting with a recruiter and doing whatever it takes to get an 18X contract. I am here to get training ideas, information about the training pipeline(not G2 it though) , and learn as much as I can about the Special Forces lifestyle.

I want to extend a thank you too all the Quite Professionals here who let hopefuls like myself enjoy the wealth of knowledge here.

Can't wait to get started!

Why dont you just contact one of the NGSF recruiters whose POC you can find here on the site.

Just an option.

Good Afternoon all,

I found this board on a google search for "Rucking" looking for up to date boot advise. After a couple of weeks and hours of reading, seems the Jungles are still the king of the hill.

I did time in the Corps from 96 to 2000 (1/2 and Unitas) Med Float, Unitas, and UDT to Oki during the 1st 4.

And I got recalled in 2001 where I served with MARFORLANT until they could no longer tollorate my "Infantryness" and sent me over to 2nd FAST with a bunch of other guys.

I am currently serving Uncle Sam once again in the Federal Law Enforcement arena. I look forward to learning a thing or two and hopefully helping someone out from time to time.

Professional Soldiers,

I am a Marine Infantry Platoon Commander (former SSgt), currently on my second trip to Iraq. I came across this forum looking for information about service tranfers and the SF in general.

I have started planning and preparing to make the transition to a NGSF unit. I have not decided which one yet, but I have contacted the 19th in Utah. As of right now, my plan is to EAS or resign the commission and enlist. I am interested in the 18C field, and then cross training for 18D.

I have already soaked up alot of great information on this forum, and if anyone has any information, idea's or comments that may help me out, please fire away. I'm all ears. Or eyes in this case.

I'm not at all affiliated with any SF Group, although I'm looking into getting transferred into support with the 20th Group in AL or FL.

I'm a former Marine and current GA National Guard soldier. I'm also a nursing student, which is what actually led me here.

I doubt I'll be posting much, if at all, but I wanted to at least register and throw out an introduction before I started reading in the 18D forums.

Greetings,

Thank you all for having this forum available to all those interested in the SF community. I am a federal LEO w/ the Dept of State and have come across some extraordinary individuals (SF active, ANG, and former) working overseas and domestic.

I have no prior military experience and am contemplating enlisting through REP 63 for the ANG. My clock is running, but I came on young w/ my current job. This site has been an invaluable resource.

Thank you all for your service and commitment for the right reasons. Hopefully I can post more if I make a serious commitment, and pursue being part of the community one day.

Greetings,

I joined three months ago and have enjoyed reading all of the threads available on this site. I am very content to remain a gray man but figured I would post an introduction so if ever I thought I had some valuable input on a topic I could post sans an FTFSI from an administrator.

I took interest in the site after reading Get Selected by Warrior-Mentor. I am steadily chopping through the recommended reading list in the back of that book. I have yet to pick up any Anthony Robbins but The Ugly American, Slow Burn, Man’s Search for Meaning, and The Razors Edge were all very good reads. Pretty much any of the books that appear in your Book Reviews and Recommendations thread get a trip to the library out of me.

As my profile reads I am prior service Army as a 33W (Electronics Warfare and Intercept Systems Repair). I am currently studying electrical engineering at Oklahoma State University. I must confess, the prospect of becoming an 18E becomes more appealing the more research I commit to the idea. That being said, thank you all for your service and for maintaining such a professionally driven site.

I don't mean to pry, but I do a ton of microwave paths for cellular phone companies (making sure I can read a map better than satellites) in my civilian job. I was curious if Matta Mile is congruent with the "Matta Mile" on the Roswell Relief Route. My Google foo is strong, but if it is the same mile marker and sign I remember, BTDT. Not a bad stretch of road. Most of the produce markets , you can keep though. “A” for effort atleast.

The "Matta Mile" area is an area just south of Smoke Bomb Hill where SF units took PT. The old trails are still there, just getting crowded by civilization. Took PT there my own darn self many a time in the 70s and 80s.

New guy here.

Active duty Navy from 2000-2005 and now in the USNR and will be heading to Iraq February 16, 2007.

I was stationed in Peurto Rico for 3yrs where I met a few guys from 7th Group Special Forces (C3/7). Awesome guys! Very smart and very professional. They allowed me and some guys to come out to the range and pick up on some great training. A buddy from P.R., eventually left the Navy and last I heard was fininshing language school in the SF pipeline.

After I return from Iraq I plan on going back active duty for BUD/S.

Hello everyone. I stumbled upon this site during my normal "rummage for knowledge" seaches on the world wide web. I thought I would join in order to appreciate all that is abound on this site.
A little about me. I'm in the Army and was stationed at Fort Stewart for about 3.5 years as a Ground Surviellence Operator. During my time there I had the chance to be deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Jan. of 2003 and Jan of 2005. Some of the missions I went on while over there gave me the chance to work with some teams from the SF side of the house. Ever since then I've been "bitten by the SF bug" so to speak.
Due to the UAVs taking over my original position on the battlefield, we've been forced to reclass. So now I'm at Huachuca going through 97B AIT. As soon as I finish training I'm dropping my paperwork to SFAS and will one day join the rest of you Quiet Professionals.
Thank you for letting me join this forum and I look forward to learning as much as I can.

I want to join SF, but don't know if I can do the 18X option, but I will try and talk to a recruiter to see what can be done. I was thinking of going SF in the National Guard (either MA or FL) but reading through here, I gather that most want to go Active, so that let me thinking if going Active is better. Right now i'm reading GET SELECTED for SPECIAL FORCES, by Major Joe Martin and MSG Rex Dodson. I say 90% of the questions has been answered, the few question that I have is the age limit ( I'll be 35 in 7 days) and wether I want to become an officer and then SF or just go SF and later become a Warrant Officer, but I hope to find those answers here. Thank you everyone for all the help and for defending our country.

My name is Russell and I am extremely interested in military service, especially U.S. Army Special Forces. I have a varied background in athletics, academics, and construction, but I continue to aspire to develop my full potential as a patriot, leader, and teamate. I am not, however, a dilusional kid who wants to collect medals, badges, and bragging stories. I am 26 and planning to enlist on an 18x contract this Summer. I am aware of the difficulties and obstacles involved in becoming a member of an elite unit, which is why I am drawn to this site. I have many questions, but I am taking time to review the database available here before showing my ignorance and lack of preparation and research ability. I look forward to learning from you all and wish you all the best in the future.

Hello everyone. There is a lot of good information on this site for those of us aspiring to persue a career in Special Forces. I am currently an 11B with only 14 months TIS, and I'm in no great rush to get to SFAS. I want to take my time, learn what there is to learn in the regular Army, and then proceed to SFAS. I am currently deployed in Baghdad with 1CD, and I'm trying to PCS after this deployment. I am trying to go to Ft. Drum to get in with 10th Mountain. I would hope to be deployed to Afghanistan with that unit, and then go through with my plans for SF. If I can make all that happen, the specialty I would most like to persue within SF would be 18E.

Well, that's just a little about myself. Thank you for producing such a great source of information for people like myself, and for all the sacrifices you have all made.

As it turns out I didn't have it, and am fine now, I just had really bad shin splints. I know what you thinking, why didn't you stay? They gave me that option, but it would have taken 6 months or more for my shins to be ready for a beating again, and sitting around for 6 months on trainnee pay is not really that appealing.

It was after I left that my interest in the SF world grew 10 fold. I already had an avid interest in the SF world, but now I had an insiders view and I suddenly understood a lot more about what I was reading than I did before (plus I have 15 or so mates who can fill me in on things I don't know about). So when I read about the Green Berets, it was like love at first site. Everything you do represents everything I have ever wanted to do in the military. This is where the story gets interesting. I desperately want to get back into the military again, civilian life is just not for me anymore, and as a lucky twist of fate I am also an American citizen. Thus I would really like to find out how easy (or hard) it would be for me to get onto the 18X-ray program. If there is a chance I can do it, then I will be there with bells on.

Welcome CeDo and AusDigger.

"I am an Aussie who is absolutely infatuated with the Green Berets." AusDigger, you're scaring me;)
There's a few threads dealing with non-Americans going to SF training. (I know we've usually got an SF'er embedded with the Aussie SF and vice versa.)

Maybe infatuated was the wrong word, but you have to love it to want to live it.

Hello Professional Soldiers...

A little about myself off the bat:

My name is Brandon but I go by DJ (retired club Dj) or Hawk. (Call Sign given to me at OPSGEAR) I live in Salt Lake City, Ut. and I am 29 almost 30. I have a girlfriend of almost 5 years now and a daughter who will turn 7 in June.

I have no previous Military Experience however I am very fascinated by everything Military. I’m an avid reader (just started) of Military books; in fact I just finished Roughneck Nine-One. Along with SOG (got an Autograph from Sergeant Mark Kinsler) and a few other Special Forces books. I am currently reading Hunting Down Saddam by Robin Moore along with Special Forces A Guided Tour of U.S. Army Special Forces by Tom Clancy and John Gresham.

I have worked with a few prior Military personal at OPSGEAR where I was part of the Force-on-force OPFOR Team. There I worked with prior AF SpecOps, 19SFG, and 82nd Airborne. Along with a LAPD Veteran.
I have a vast amount of respect and awe for all of you who serve this country and I truly am thankful for each and every one of you. And I must say that my time spent at OPSGEAR allowed me to see part of the Warrior Culture first hand.

I came across this site after a friend of mine posted the "Somewhere a True Believer is training to kill you." quote on another forum we both belong to. And he posted to site from which he got this powerful and motivational quote. I spent a few days as a guest looking around and not being able to get very far thus I was compelled to join the boards about 5 days ago and have just now gained the courage to post my intro.

Thank you Quiet Professionals for having me, Thank you for fighting for me, Thank you!

Hi all,

Pleasure to be here. CW3 Kiowa Warrior Instructor Pilot here, currently freezing the jewels off in Sunny Fairbanks, AK.

Long time Cav guy here, and in ancient times spent 4 years on fast attack subs in the navy. E-6 then, followed by a stint swinging hammers as a civilian, followed by a drop to E-4 coming in the Army, back up to E-6 as a 13B (hey no choice, was prior service, and it taught me to play dominoes), followed by flight school.

16th Cav, 2nd Cav, 7th Cav, 17th Cav. Yeah I'm one of those guys, hehe.

Here to share TTP's, fish stories, lies, and favorite brown liquors and cigars.

The more that Army aviation shrinks, the more that big Army supports SOCOM, or JSOC, or whatever we call it this week. That's a good thing. I am currently training a lot of new guys in my unit. They're smart, motivated, and are here to make the mission happen. My job is to get em up to speed so that they don't get me killed or anyone on the ground killed.

Hopefully I'll be able to glean from you guys recommendations on what we can do to support you. We have some pretty damn good shooters. Plus there are a few other things we're training that may cross over well.

Oh, and like I told Team Sergeant, the motto of the Warrant Officer Corps is also "Quiet Professional"

That's me in a nutshell, no need for the dirty little secrets just yet.

Welcome aboard. I have also done some some flying with the Cav. 1/9th, 4/9th, 7/17th.

For CPT and G_D:

While practicing autorotations during a military night training exercise a Cobra screwed up the landing and landed on the tail rotor. The landing was so hard that it broke off the tail boom. However, the chopper fortunately remained upright on its skids, sliding down the runway doing 360s. As the Cobra slid past the tower, trailing a brilliant shower of sparks, this was the radio exchange that took place...

Tower: "Sir, do you need any assistance?"

Cobra: "I don't know Tower, we ain't done crashin' yet."

Enjoy..:D

In answer to the question before, an Ex-SASR member was supposed to have 'commercialised' the name in 1989 when he demonstrated it in Cairns. It is actually quite fun, because you can run down a cliff face as opposed to bounding down.

I have heard of its use during helicopter insertions (but I have no evidence to back it up), which some members prefer as you can hit the ground running. I have also heard that SASR members exfil the aircraft, when fast roping, before the rope has hit the ground, so as to save time.

If anyone has any evidence to suggest otherwise though, I will stand corrected.

Greetings to All,

I have been lurking for several weeks and planned to do so for several more, just trying to develop SA and prevent a FTFSI tag. However, I received a package in the mail yesterday and I would like to say “Thank You” to Team Sergeant!

I have never served in the Armed Forces. I am an engineer and I have spent my entire professional life designing communication equipment, specifically, SATCOM radios. During this time, I have had the opportunity to travel to several “exotic” locals and have, at times, been escorted by certain men. To these gentlemen, I say “Thank You, the pleasure was all mine” and to all who serve, have served, and will serve, you have my gratitude.

I now will return to lurking; reading and learning.

Regards,
Hank

Thanks for the opportunity to participate in such an interesting and educational forum. That being said, I will spend most time reading and learning and will attempt not to swallow my whole foot at once when I do have a question.

Thanks again,

Hey all,
I guess nobody here is going to ACK my existence until I put my name up here. I am MSG Mark D. Witt originally from Silicon Valley, and joined the Army in 1986. I spent four years as a cook in 2/75th then ETS'ed after Just Cause due to ex wife problems. I then decided to do what I originally wanted and came back in the Army in 1992 and went to SFAS/ 18E Q-course, then on to 3rd SFG(A). Spent 6 years in 3/3rd then 3 1/2 years in 1/3rd SFG(A). Eventually, my number came up and I went down to Key West as an instructor at SFUWO for 3 years. Just came back to Bragg and am getting ready to sign back in to 3rd SFG(A) again. I'm hoping to go back to my last team as they are in need of a Team Sergeant from what I hear. It would make sense to me to give an ex SCUBA instructor a SCUBA team, but you never know what a CSM will do to you until it's done.
Hobbies include guitar playing, spearfishing, wakeboarding, and riding my KLR 650. The spearfishing was awesome in key West but I think it will be a bit harder to get out here in N.C.
Thanks TS in advance for welcoming me into this forum.

Besides a weekend liberty on the streets of Fayette Nam that was my only contact with Army personnel during my tour. Ok My name is Kerry and I am a member of the Community. For those of you who know me I send greetings for those of you who don't I've been around since 79 with a stint in 7th, IRR, 20th, 3rd, 5th, 96th, and currently back in 5th. I spent the obligatory time at the school house and no more. the greater percentage of my Team time has been spent here in 5th Group and I am currently working at finishing my fifth trip into the sandbox. I was delayed getting into Afghanistan until after the initial push because 1st Battalion was last in so I was still on the ground at Campbell when Jeff Davis, Dan Petithory and Cody Prosser ran afoul of the Air Force so I had to stay there until after we buried them. Once that was done we caught a flight over to UZ and waited to be utilized. The first person to greet me on the ground was Bill Benett who as you know was lost during OIF II. He told me the fighting is over and you got here to late. Well as it turns out he was a little premature and the rest is history. I am about due to rotate home after my fourth trip to Iraq not to include PDSS's so I currently have 38 months downrange since this thing started. I'm hoping to get a little downtime after this trip and then go to JPAC for a couple of years. Just waiting to see if my 4187 clears all the required hurdles. I've been reading up on some of the posts for the last several months and as I see something that I think I can be of assistance on, or something that manages to get under my skin I will speak up. Thanks for inviting me to join.

Hello Gents,

Thanks for letting me be a part of your community here. I was Infantry with the 1st CAV. Enjoyed it lots but got out to explore the world a bit. After two years wandering Asia, I was called back (as I expected to be), and with a gentle twist of my arm I'm now re-educated as Civil Affairs. No complaints though, I think it will be an interesting new adventure. Will be testing my new skills very shortly, probably in Iraq.

I was turned on to SF through my ROTC instructors back when I was in college. All of the NCOs and Captains were SF of some sort so we cadets always got the passive recruiting vibe. The interest is even stronger since I'm now at Bragg and interact with students and SF guys all the time. I'm just looking to read, learn, and apply. Hello,
My name is Joel, I'm 23 years old, out of college for a year, and will be signing an 18x contract in May.

UPDATE: For many reasons, I signed a 11C National Guard contract this morning. Shipping to Benning 20070328. I am looking forward to using my time in the NG to prepare me for going Active next year and going to SFAS. Thanks again for the time that all the QP's, Soldiers, and other professionals on this board take to inform us who seek your wisdom!!

Hello,

I'm Chris from Miami. No military service, so sorry for that. I'm just a hack who likes to get out and practice on paper and I've reloaded for about 12 years. Right now, I'm in a 'bolt gun' stage and shoot a year old Sako TRG-42 in 338 LM, a Rem Sendero in 7mm Rem Mag, a Savage 10 FP LE2B in 308 and a Savage 12 VLP in 22-250. I kind of enjoy the hobby of reloading almost as much as I do shooting and find it relaxing. I'm here to learn about longer range shooting, as Miami only has 2 100yd ranges at the present moment. I can drive up to Tampa to shoot 500 yds, but that is still pretty short.

Anyhow, thanks for at least letting me post and if you want me to take a hike, let me know.

Take care and thanks for the nice site.

Good evening Gents,

First, I would like to say thank you to all of the contributing members of this site, particularly the Quite Professionals; you guys are a wealth of knowledge, and I feel truly grateful for the opportunity to lurk here.

A little about me; I did 5 years in the Marine Corps as Ground Radio Repair, left the Corps in 04, completed an A.A. degree, and am currently trying to break into the contracting world.

I've given a great deal of thought to going to the Army and getting myself to SFAS, but I realize that is not something you do until you have your ducks in a row and know without a doubt it's what you want, so right now I'm going to continue to pursue my current course, and soak up all the information I can from you fine gentlemen.

The one around the pseudo-motor pool/gravel pad behind Building 3 on Pete AFB. ;) Rusty, if you look around really carefully, you'll find even more current and former SF guys at your location and next door that you can most likely (politely) tap for advice and guidance.

Roger, Razor, that playpen behind Bldg 3. I see alot of QP's around Bldg 3, but I don't want to bother them with my concerns. I've been researching, reading, and asking questions of former and current candidates and QP's for some time now, and it's time to just do it.

It's always good to talk to someone who's been there and done it, but by the same token, I don't want to appear to be another pestering wannabe looking for answers to questions that aren't going to be answered. I ruck, and run, and PT, and think and read as much as I can. I just want my body and mind to be ready for SFAS.

But, Razor, it's always nice to get a beer and hear a story or two.

Thank you all for letting me come aboard. I asked to join this board due to the quality of information that I saw on H5N1 bird flu and the great work on the La Mas Ammo. On the bird flu, I am involved in our company response to a potential outbreak. In regard to the La Mas ammo I have been working on terminal balistic for a number of years due to my personal interests. I have not been in the military but have some time in as a peace officer. I have a background in Zoology and Chemistry, and currently work in the power industry. I have been a handloader for over 30 years, was a master class pistol shooter in falling plate matches and try to be a shade tree gunsmith. I have an extensive background in water treatment including R.O.'s and domestic water if this will be of any use to any of you. Bb

Thank very much.

I am Tony Soika, a relatively new 2nd Lieutenant. I was commissioned on 5 AUG 06 after 16 years 10 months as an enlisted man (highest rank: SSG). While I am in the army reserve, I elected to branch Infantry since that was where most of my enlisted time was spent. I had only recently switched from the guard to reserves (May 05). I was active duty from 1989-1994 which also reflects one reenlistment. My last active duty slot was at Schofield Barracks where I attended Air Assault School, RIP, and the local version of SERE which was put on by the 125th MI Bn if I remember correctly (might have been 1st of the 25th or something like that, it's been a while).

For the past 6 months as of this posting I have been serving as a PL of a Rifle Platoon while I waited for my transfer back to the guard to go through. When the packet was lost for the 2nd time, I drew the line and interviewed instead for a local tactical Psyops battalion. I was accepted and will be taking over a Tactical Psyops Detachment. I go to BOLCII which is some new thing that apparently is like PLDC for officers (giggle). I then am slotted for Infantry OBC in August, Jump School in late September, and the Psyops Q course in June '08. It is expected that in 2009 I will deploy to parts as yet unknown and in 2010 I will attend DLI.

As a civilian I own a business that specializes in training athletes. This is NOT an adertisement, but my career bio is on my company web site at SportsPerformanceAdvancement.com

In 1998-99 I served in the support company 3/20th SFG(A). in my 3rd drill with the unit, it was discovered that my contract had been done incorrectly and I would lose my bonus and student loan repayment deal which I had in writing. Just as bad, with 10 years of service I would be reduced to Corporal (from SGT). My chain of command went to bat with the FL ARNG people for about a year but to no avail so I left the unit. That's my one brush with SF types.

My deployments and overseas service include Desert Storm, Team Spirit '93 (Korea), RSO&I (Korea), Puerto Rico (w/3/20th), and El Salvador.

If anyone has any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to drop me a line.

I have the luxury of working with someone who has been there and done that. In my 18 years of service I find it humbling to listen and learn from those who have come before me but are not gone, maybe mostly because they are stubborn. I thank those of you who have the power in this forum for not giving me the boot just yet. I am here to not only get knowledge, but also contribute to the subjects that I can. Once again thank you all for this opportunity and to those who are here and still debating whether to stay or not I say this:

The Spartans learned only one craft, soldiering, and were inculcated with only one conception of excellence: fighting bravely for their city.

I've been lurking around here for well over a year, and like what I have seen. I finally decided to register as I am growing weary dealing with kids, computer commandos and civilian inquisiters on several forums. I have decided to stick with one "fun" forum, and a couple professional forums.

I have been a full time police officer in Southern California for 19 years. I have been assigned to SWAT as a firearms instructor and armorer for 17 years. I'm also the primary firearms instructor on all of our current systems as well as starting a nationally recognized edged weapons program for L/E. I am currently in limbo awaiting a forced medical retirement due to numerous on duty injuries. I have worked all but 6 months of my carreer at night (swings or graveyard) and also spent 3.5 years in a crime suppresion bicycle unit, and 4 years in our aviation unit.

I have spent a bunch of time cross training with many folks from the military special operations community. I am also keenly aware that I don't sleep in dirt, am not a snake eater, and try to stay in my lane. On the other hand, I've spent my entire adult life hunting people in the ghetto, so the urban stuff is my cup of tea.

Hopefully, I can add some different perspective in the weapons section of the site, and keep my mouth shut on the other stuff. Thanks-DB

Thanks, I'm sure I'll probably have a difference of opinion on some of the weapons stuff here (sort of like everywhere else), but at least I can have a good healthy interaction with other professional gun carriers rather than the morons I have dealt with elsewhere.

Hello all,

I am from Texas, but living in AZ. I have a little military experience from the U.S. Army and Marines. I recieved my education in AZ at NAU. I like to spend time in the desert when I can and have even spotted illegals on my own while occupying a hide on the border where I live. I am an occasional shooter, enjoying decimating the jackrabbit population here when I am in the mood. I became interested in the U.S. Army Special Forces after meeting Major Matt Casteel and Chief Slatt during OCS Phase I at Ft. Meade, SD.

Greetings all. Glad I came across this site.

I started life as an engineer then went though assessment and the Q-course in 1992. Detachment commander of ODA 725 from 92-95. Then to Fort Polk as an ODA and BN O/C. While there I went to SFARTAETC and that allowed me the opportunity to go to Colombia as an exchange officer. Got out in 2000 and spent some time working for big pharma before I started my own business in nuisance wildlife control. High adventure!! Late last year I finally got around to changing my address with a reserve command and not long thereafter I got a call from the local CA BN here in Tulsa. How could I say no? Not with what is going on in the world in this day and age. Anyway, due to go back to Bragg this spring for the CA course with a trip to play in the sand as a 200 m target.

And FWIW, after I complete a Crossfit workout, I mix my protein powder in Guinness Extra Stout! :lifter

Welcome.

Not a problem being a Dem. It depends how you look at life as a Dem. Some Dems are more conservative then some Republicans. You would probably be surprised a the number of military guys that are Dems.

At least you are proud of your choice, some try to hide it.

Hi Reaper:

Why am I here? I spent most of my 20s trying to decide whether or not to join the Army. My father, who had gone Navy during Vietnam, told me, "Don't do it unless you absolutely love it." The logical response? Well, how will I know if I don't try? Then it occurred to me what my father was saying to me, so I didn't do it. Some days I really regret it, and other days I don't - like when I heard about Aberdeen PG and Abeer al-Janabi.

Okay, here's the short answer you're wishing I'd shut up and get to - because I'll always wonder about the road not taken.

Stay safe, wherever you are.

Pete

.....because I'll always wonder about the road not taken.....

I know a few of those people. Now in their late 40s early 50s they went to college, raised a family, lived the civilian life but are now wondering where life has pased them by.

They have had no excitment, no thrills, just everyday life. Para-sailing at Cancun is not the same as making a N/CE jump onto a short DZ. Taking a cruise and blowing some bubbles on a reef is not the same as hanging onto the outside of a nuke sub. Climbing the rock wall at the county fair is not the same as dragging yourself up a rock face way out in the middle of nowhere.

I tell the young guys and gals I run into to join up. Any service. 30 years from now they will look back and be glad they did.

Welcome

My name is Rob, and I'd like to introduce myself. After a friend directed me to this site, I felt compelled to jump with both feet, and hope to swim with the sharks a bit. While I am soaking up all the outstanding politics and ideology that Fayetteville State has to offer, I thought I might try and stay in touch and in tune alittle bit with you.

I have spent nearly 8 of my 17 years in service with 3rd SFG. I have had the good fortune to travel, as many of you have, and return with my Passport free of "Status Non Gradus" stamps. I miss the teams a great deal, even though there is always someone worth choking out. ( I think sometimes it was even me that needed a good smack, but I still miss it.) After some more civilian schooling and a bit more military education I am hoping to return to the teams and throw my hat back in the ring for better or worse.

I enjoy my new HK USP Compact, but won't give up my Kimber. And lastly, when exactly did the Steelers win anything that wasn't rigged?

I agree 110% with you Pete. Although I did not get to travel to all the places that many of you did while in the service, I did get to go out and see some of the more undesirable vacation areas of the world. Now that I in graduate school I get to hear about the trips to _insert country here_ to hold hands and do a circle jerk from other "travelled" grad students. I wouldn't give up my past military experiences (or the future ones) for anything in the world.

Hello, I came here mostly to find people I knew from many years ago. As it says in my profile I am not nor have ever been Special Forces. I was a LRRP with the 25th Inf Division and I was on Combat Tracker Teams with the 9th Inf division and the 25th Inf Division. I also met and knew many SF soldiers when they were sent to recuiting duty during the last years of the Vietnam War. It was an era when SF soldiers returning fom Vietnam had their choice of Recruiting or Drill Sergeant duty. Ft. Bragg or any orther group was not an option.

Found this site while looking at the SOCNET site.

Started out in ROTC then to AD in Army Hospitals in Germany 4 years. Got out...resigned commission...requested reappointment with (finally!) assignment to 12th SF Svc Co and attachment to 2/12 Forward MedOps Team then Group Med Platoon Leader for 4 years. Got hooked by way of the 3/12 into 351 CA in Mt. View CA with assignment to SOCPAC team as Pub Health Officer....never deployed but then recruited to be Div Surgeon in the 95th Div. Did that for several years...thought I should get back to the AMEDD so on to the 44th Evac.....bored silly. So, was to be assigned SOCOM Surgeons Office as IMA 60W5G...DS-DS started...all assignments frozen...I died there, couldn't move, then was "retired" at MRD.

Really enjoyed my military educational development...C4, exercise planning demands, casualty management requirement on DZs, my own jumps, etc.

Now I'm a civilian 60W, Beretta guy, jeeper, and member of the SFA.

Really happy to find this site. It's one of the few ( if only) site where the 12th Group is able to communicate again.

Hello everyone. My name is Charles and I am currently considering a career in the Army. While growing up, my parents strongly discouraged any type of military service. When I moved out of my parents house and away from their influence I began to regret that I had never served, but at that time at that I was not fit for service. I had been raised to be mouthy, arrogant, rebellious and convinced of my own infallibility. In short, I was a punk. I could have enlisted, but honestly the Army would have probably sent me packing and I wouldn't have understood why. Well, five years have passed and I am happy to say that I am not the person that I once was.

I am here to learn more about the Army Special Forces. I specifically want to determine if the Special forces and I would be a good match. I will be mostly reading at first, not posting. I welcome any advice, criticism, comments or questions. Thank you for letting me be here, for the information that has already assisted me and thanks in advance for any and all future help that I will receive.

I learned of this site from a fellow 12th grp'er. Many of us have been able to stay in touch thru emails over the years, but as is the case, some have fallen off the radar. As time goes on, one can hope they hear of this site also and join so we can reconnect. As soon as I reviewed the site; sent a code burst to all the members of Chapter L, so expect to see an increase in new members soon. To those who know me. Most of my weekdays are spent traveling and my weekends skydiving. My usename here is the same as on dropzone.com and have sent this site to several fellow skydivers that are former, active, retired SF. To those who created the site; my gratitude.

Thank you for this opportunity. I was directed to these forums by a SF recruiter – am I to understand there is only one gentleman fulfilling this role? If so, it seems overcautious not to mention names but I'll err on the side of caution.

I am a prior service member, spent just under 4 years in the military and it was not a good fit for me or for the Army. I am currently completing my masters in Industrial/Organizational Psychology (the psychology of people in work groups and motivation) and one of my classmates suggested that I use Special Forces in a purely theoretical proposal for research.

My main goal here is to learn from this community and to represent SF respectfully and accurately in my paper without violating PERSEC or OPSEC. (And maybe I can find out what happened to my favorite SF DS along the way?)
