Please excuse my ignorance even though thats not an excuse. I was unaware of the rules and did not check the reply to the first post. I think this is what you told me to do. I am 27 years old with no prior service. I am joining the Army National Guard. I am leaving for basic training on August 9th to go to Fort Benning. I played 2 years college basketball and I am an amateur boxer. I live in Jersey City, NJ and looking forward to going down south for a while. Currently working Security here in J.C.

My name is Jake, I have been looking ino this sight for some time, very informative.
Thanks all.
hello i forgot to post an intro .yall can already see my screen name but i go by the name of jay. My real name is jonathan nicholas wright ,I hate my middle name, but we are professional soldiers right?).I'm from Baltimore, Maryland. born may 10th 1983 in the u.s. #1 murder capital .i started martial arts at age 9 in jr.high started fighting to protect myself soon after, people asked me to protect them .I did that and it felt good to do it,but it felt even better to teach people to defend themselves and in turn help themselves. I got in to physical activities to keep in shape and also played sports year around for school, until i got into the U.S. Army in June 2000 .I was raised by my father, while growing up he taught me finish what i start, don't quit on the goals I set, speak what you are able to back up and he also taught me that you can gauge a man by how much respect he will give others When i turned 17 yrs old my dad signed ,so that i could enter the military I been wanting to do that since i was 12. I served with the 1st brigade b-co 3rd batt 504th parachute infantry regiment at fort bragg ,nc ,which is now 508th PIR .In 2003 I deployed to afghanistan from January to August and in 2004 to Iraq from January to June.In afghanistan(2003) task force devil was main effort for conventional combat operations and 3rd batt was the main effort of the task force.we where moving all over from base to base, mission after mission, including a combat jump with the rangers which which was declassified a year later. Towards the last half of of the deployment we was sent to fire bases in shkin, gardez and orgune where we got more exposure to SF operators. In Iraq(2004)I went with my unit to Iraq we did dismounts , pulled perimeter security, main gate gaurd and training duty to the ICDC Iraqi platoons.bravo company and delta company was main QRF @ base anaconda /balad.In Iraq i also volunteered to extend my actice term hoping to be in the deployment window for stop lost to go to Afghanistan(it was pushed back). Over the course of my enlistment I had three children. My term in the military has exposed me to lots of life's multiple options including the want and desire to go SPECIAL FORCES,and I respect all that it stands for .Due to my ex-wife's problem with infedelity I was given the advise to separate and go national guard to take care of my divorce because they told me that anything can happen to where she could cause me to get droped from selection, due to emergencies. I'm currently with the 20th sfg training up to go through the training pipeline as an 18 echo and also trying to get back on active duty to do it full time .;)

Howdy All,
Well, let me start out by saying I don't have a long tab. I graduated SFAS class 1-93 when I was at Fort Carson to escape legland. To make a long story short, my S2 screwed up my Clearance Packet, and I ended up in Limbo waiting on orders to the Q course. Recruiter told me I'd have a better chance of getting stuff squared away pushing my packet through USASOC than FORSCOM, so I ended up at Ft Lewis w/ 3/12 SFG(A) (Back when we were on South Fort, before we moved to Buckley and 19th Group.)
Anyhow, spent a year drilling, yadayada and it seemed like it wasn't gonna happen, so I contracted with ROTC. I transfered from B Co to C Co in Los Alamitos the month before we transfered to 19th Group as D Co (Provisional) 5/19thSFG (A). So I was a SGT one drill and a Cadet the next. I spent the next 2 years w/ Dco while I finished college (Who has ever heard of a Cadet on an ODA?)
After commisioning, I spent the next 3 1/2 years at Bragg w/ 3/325th AIR.
Oh yeah, when I was active the first time, I was an 11H2P, and I was commisioned Infantry. Did some PL time, S1 time (yuck) and I was the BN AS-3 when I got out.
Anyhow, that's the short version.

Hello all,
I visited this site a few times for the excellent advise before heading to the 07-06 class, where I got selected. I will be reading this site regularly as I prepare for the 18E course. Thanks for the great info, and for all the SFAS cadre that showed us first hand what it is like to be a quite professional.

Couldn't hack it as an NCO, so I went Warrant as a PA, then slipped further down the slope when we all got Comissioned.
PA for 2/10 SFG '96-'99. Incredible group of guys.
Retired in '02. Happily working 2-3 days per week solo in a Rural Hospital ER. Sounds good, except they're 24hr shifts... Money's good, anyway.

Hi everyone! My name is Joel.
About me - I am 24 years old, a college graduate who tried the civilian business work and despised it. I'm currently talking to recruiters from all of the different branches and considering many different jobs in the military, one of those being special forces.
So far I've taken the ASVAB, which I got a 96 on, and talked with the Army. Tomorrow is the Marines. Then I will schedule with the Navy and AF.
I hope to learn a lot and maybe meet some new people. All people here have my utmost respect and I look forward to learning by asking questions and listening.
Thanks everyone!

NousDefionsDoc -
Why do you say good luck in the Navy or Air Force? Just curious...right now I'm leaning towards Army or Marines, but I figured I'd talk to all of them.
I read the rules and I don't believe I have broken any? I certainly hope not (with only one post). I filled out my profile and posted here first. If I broke any rules I apologize.
Thanks...now back to reading the posts before I start asking questions.

Gentlemen,
I have lurked here for some time. I never intended to post on your forum, as I have no military service, and don't share that experience with most members of this forum. So, I've never posted an introduction. But, I've found your members to engage in very civil discussions about a variety of issues. The information available on this site is informative and the conversations are interesting. I've learned here. I've read some interesting posts, the beer thread particularly, and think I need to ask questions. Learning about stuff is always good, even if I'm pushing 60.
I'm a civil attorney with 33 years experience. I enjoy Palma and other high power shooting. I also enjoy large format photography, but now I mostly pursue my 4 kids and their activities.
With everyone's approval, I will attempt to keep the discourse courteous
Well damn WR! 'Bout time. Welcome. How have ya been? Ready to go shooting again, when the weather cools down some? ;)

Hi guys,
I've never posted a message on any forum so I hope I'm doing this correctly. I am not a soldier, but this site seems to suit me the best. I appreciate the no nonsense approach here. I am a full time street cop at a 120+ man department in Indiana. I take pride in this title and I have been on the road for over 8 years. I am assisgned to the SWAT team and my specialty is long range work(sniper). However, all snipers/spotters are cross trained on entry and are often used in the City in that capacity. I have always been fascinated by terminal ballistics and research this topic in my spare time. Since 12-05 I have been talking to APLP(Stan) and have been testing his stuff since May of this year. I debrief everyone I can regarding police action shootings and I have been known to lose sleep over obtaining the best equipment for my fellow officers. I hope to learn a lot here and I may have some information I can offer.
Thanks

Hi Guys,
my name is Mike and I live halfways between Munich and Bad Tölz, Germany.
I am 37 years old, married to a German girl since 1996.
I was born in Böblingen (just a quarter mile from Panzer Kaserne, at the Kreiskrankenhaus  ). My father was a US servicemember in the 1960´s, my mother is a local national from Stuttgart.
We relocated to San Antonio, TX. in 1970, returning to Germany in 1976, after my mother divorced the old man.
I have been a Police linguist since 1988, working for the Bavarian State Police, Criminal Investigations Division. Through my job I´ve met alot of US servicemembers, from the 218th MP Co. (793rd MP Bn., 14th MP Bde) that we worked with on cases here in Munich (McGraw Kaserne), as well as guys from the 1/10 SFG(A) at Flint Kaserne in Bad Tölz.
I was still in contact with some of the SF guys, even after they PCS´d back to CONUS or to Böblingen or ETS´d. One of my good friends from SF (I even visited him at SWC after he transfered to Ft. Bragg) unfortunately passed away a couple or years ago. Others went to the Pentagon, to Carson, or elsewhere. There is no contact anymore. :(
Last time I was up at Panzer was in 1996, for a Hawaiian Luau at the Teamhouse/Garden of Eden.
Maybe I run into some of the guys I used to know on this forum ? Would be great to see old friends, and maybe meet some new ones. If there are questions, please don´t hesitate to ask.
Stay safe and God bless,
Mike
Munich, Germany
Welcome Mike. That is fantastic country. Even after all these years, I still miss it and would love to go back.
OH! Maybe you would be familiar with some of the Gasthofs, just outside Toelz.

Brad,
thanks ! I like your avatar, the "old school" 10th Group flash with the German flag. :D
OH! Maybe you would be familiar with some of the Gasthofs, just outside Toelz.
Some place particular ? Kloster Reitberg is still there (the monastery 3mls. north of Tölz), or the Jagerwirt, between Flint Kaserne and Lenggries ? (There are several guys from Böblingen down there every week, to honor the soldiers that are buried at the local graveyard there). Also the Gasthof Papyrer on the road to the Sylvenstein Lake was very popular among the guys from Group.
Too bad that Flash doesn't exist anymore Mike and thanks. However, There are several on this Board that wore it. I visited Kloster Reitberg once. The other places don't ring a bell. The guy and family that owned the one I can't remember the name of were very good friends.
PM inbound.

Reitberg is still a busy place, lots of people from Munich drive there for the good beer.
Nearly all the good Gasthofs in and around Tölz were known to the guys from Group.

I am very new to forums. Not to mention that I have a job that take 10-12 hours of my day and I don't have a computer at my home, so chances are I will not be posting much.
I am an Active Duty Enlisted Soldier. I am all about Operational Security, so you will not hear me speak a lot of information about myself, my unit, or anything not available in Army Times, Stars and Stripes, or on the internet. All I will admit of myself is that I am a paper-pusher in an Army Health Clinic in Hessen, Germany. I love the U.S. Army and my clinic is cool, but I HATE my job. I am on orders to go to 82nd Airborne Replacement Battalion. I have a 4187 in the works for Airbone School in Route to next Duty Station. There, I will Reenlist to reclass to either a Combat Medic or a SF Medic.
I'm glad to be part of this community.

I'm a real easy going soldier and I am EXTREMELY proud of what I am and who I will become. I would appreciate any guidance anyone has to give.
Found link from SF Assoc Web Site. Just thought I'd jump in and see whats happening here.
My background: I grew up an Army brat and always striving to improve on Family Tradition the allure of SF was always in my mind. Whiile on active duty, Engineer Branch made it clear that they 'wouldn't let us ruin our career that way'. (Times have changed but this was in 1982) So I resigned my commission after my first tour (OK, there were a few other reasons as well). After a couple years in the civilian world, I joined 12 Group at Hamilton Field and spent 6 years with them.

I have been considering SF for some time. Completed unit tryouts with 20th and have been hampered with transferring from USAR to NG since. 2 deployments as 91WM6, Civilian ER RN, current student fufilling pre-req's for IPAP. Ideally I would like to become 18D qualified and serve under the SOCOM banner as 18D and eventually PA. Right now I am continuing to train and prep even though I do not officially belong to a Group in any capacity.
The time I did spend there, training with the quality of people present was just fuel for the fire. Essentially, I found exactly the types of people and training environment I had hoped to.
I also find the philosophy, culture, and physical demand of SF outstanding grounding for life.
Hello all. May have been said before, but thanks for having this sight open to non SF guys such as myself, it is definitely a great source of information. My name is Dave, 23 years old. Orignally from right outside of Boston, MA. Currently a lowly leg 96B specialist stationed at Ft. Belvoir, VA. Served in OIF with the 1st Armored Division. After seeing what the SF community is like andwhat it does first hand, I decided that its what I want to do with my military career. Whether its as a Special Forces qualified Soldier or simply working intel within the SOCOM world. I'm definitely looking forward to learning alot here and will avoid stepping on my crank as much as possible, lol.

My name is Joe and I am graduating college in December. I have been looking into OCS or 18x after graduation (I want to somehow end up in SF). I have been lurking for awhile and am encouraged by the professionalism and the spirit of the "Quiet Professionals" on this site.

My name is Jason Binkley, I'm an E-4(p) in Germany. While training up for Iraq I got to train with some 18Ds, who took some time out to help with our training. Their professionalism won me over and I've been working hard to join their ranks ever since. I'm putting together my paperwork for an SFAS class at the end of this year. When I've found something I want, I become some what obssessive about it and while in Iraq I devoured anything SF or SOF related I could have my wife mail me.
So here I am, discovered the site, and I'm glad there's something like this around. SF sites aren't so easy to find. Thanks.

Greetings and salutations to all,
I retired from the Army with twenty years in 04/01. PMOS 19D, SMOS 71L. I found this site as a member of the Small Wars Journal. A link to this board was provided and recommended to those of us who study uncoventional warfare in one aspect or another. I was never anything but a leg when I was on AD. See my profile for units of assignment. I also served in Desert Shield/Storm. Upon retiring, I used my VA to go to grad school and got an MA in Information Management. Since then, I have worked in the Defense Contracting world with Resource Consultants Inc at Camp Howze, Korea as a project manager. I came back to CONUS and hired on with the Cubic Applications Group as a historian with the Operation Iraqi Freedom Study Group (OIFSG) CAC & Fort Leavenworth, I assisted in the effort to write the book "On Point, the United States Army in Operation Iraqi Freedom." You can access many of our lessons learned work on the Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL) homepage and the Battle Command Knowledge System (BCKS) homepage. When the book was completed I hired on with CACI Inc, where I currently manage the Institutional Training Resource Model (ITRM) at DCSRM, CAC & Fort Leavenworth. I am here to learn more from the guys who have BTDT and maybe offer something useful to the board membership.

I am looking for any information or advice y'all can offer me in regards to joining the Special Forces. I am a college graduate from Texas A&M University. I am 2 years out and it seems as though life just isn't fulfilling at this point. I feel as though I will make a difference in someone's life by joining. I have researched the SF as well as other armed forces branches, but I am always drawn back to SF. I am not in the peak physical shape I was in while playing rugby throughout college, but can be in a relatively short period of time. What questions or comments should I approach a recruiter with? What information do you have to offer? Anything is considered extremely helpful. I have set a goal of December as my make it or break it point.
Thanks.

My name's Don. I lurk here quite a bit, but don't recall posting. If I have, it's been a long time, and obviously out of turn, since I didn't introduce myself. I'm a graphics artist, working for a contractor that's in negotiations with USASOC to develop some training solutions for the SWC. I was priviledged to spend a week in 11/05 at Ft. Bragg at the SWC, and spent the week running around with one of the instructors there at the school house. It was quite a neat experience to actually spend the week with a guy whom I'd read about in the book Master of Chaos, let me tell you.
I have my law enforcement standards (which mean nothing) in the state of Florida, and am still trying to get hired on at an agency. I've found that it's much harder to get hired on at a department than it is to get into the academy. My week at Bragg inspired me to switch gears, and try out for SF. For the past six months, I've been busting my ass to get into top shape, and go and live my dream.
The site here, as well as Maj. Martin's book, have done wonders for my PT routine, my mindset, and my overall attitude.

Hello, my name is Cole and I've been lurking around here for a little while now. I'm 24 years old and currently in the Air Force getting ready to go green once my enlistment is up; 1 year 7 months left on a 6 year contract. I came in without a guaranteed contract and ended up in Intelligence. I love the military, but up to this point I don't feel that I have served in the capacity that I am capable of.
I'm also a senior at Hawaii Pacific University, majoring in Diplomacy and Military Studies. I'm getting ready to pursue a second bachelors in Intelligence with a concentration in Special Operations/Low Intensity Conflict. My future goals are to go 18X once I join the Army. I'm not sure what I specifically want at this time, but I'm leaning towards being a Delta or Echo. My long term goal is to become a Warrant Officer once I meet the requirements.
Last year I did a tour in Balad, Iraq as Force Protection and right now I'm trying to get a 365 day deployment to round out my AF experience. I enjoy training, working on cars, pretty girls, and as of recently I'm trying to increase my knowledge of firearms. I'm looking forward to learning a lot here on the boards and I thank you guys for letting me join.

Hello my name is Bryant. I'm sixteen years old and I hope to become a Special Forces Detachment Commander (18A). I am an offensive/ defensive lineman on the football team, I wrestle and throw discus and shot put at my school. Physical fitness is a huge part of my life and I lift weights and run at my school six days a week during the summer. My football coach really appreciates my work ethic even when he catches me practicing room clearing between exercises!
West Point is my goal upon graduation of high school. I'm on the fast track to going there and I will stay the course. With hard work and determination I will make it. I am currently trying to decide on which path to follow in order to become 18A. I think some time in the 3rd Ranger Battalion would do wonders for leadership and combat skill development and it would be a great experience Rangers Lead The way! I can't wait until the day I make my first parachute jump. HALO operations fascinate me to no end and I will make sure I am assigned to an active HALO capable ODA. I'm a regular at the Ranger Joes near Ft.Benning! I have a cousin who was in Marine Force Recon and I may start working with him on some basic skills land nav, marksmanship, etc. Anyone in my little town can tell you that I love to ruck! My marches sometimes cause a bit of a stir though!
This is a great forum and I hope to pick up some tips and learn from the wisdom of quiet professionals. Thanks.

I am separating from the AF in a few months after four years of service and researching information on NG SF Units and other enlistment options. I have enjoyed serving in the AF but after being at Pope for so long, I feel that I belong on the other side of the fence, so to speak. I have found a lot of great information here already. Greetings to all,
I orignally went through SFQC in 1978-1979 and was assigned to Camp McKall as instructor for Phase I. At that time all of the Groups were overstrength in 11B(S). Got out in 1981 and came back 1983-1986. Spent sometime with 2nd BN 7th SFG. I transitioned to 18B when the career field opened.
I recently re-enlisted with 20th SFGA .

Found my way here as a result of Wikipedia, one of my favorite places on the web.
I'm currently attending SUNY Oswego, majoring in Global and International Studies with a concentration on East Asia, specifically China and the Middle East. I'm hoping that this will help me at least in some small in my pursuit of winning the Green Beret once I graduate.
My father and grandfather are/ were Army veterans, one of 10th Mountain Division and the other of WW2 (though I've never really been told what he did) respectively.
I'm pretty much here to lurk and learn, I'm a wannabe I suppose but a quiet and driven one. If I have any questions I'll try to make them as simple and straight-forward as possible to avoid the consternation of senior members.
Thanks alot for developing such an interesting and informative resource,

Hello gents,
This is only my 6th post here. I've been lurking for a couple years now and completely forgot to post my intro here until Jfhiller reminded me.
Would have been more than happy to announce an 18x contract in my hands a while back on a post here, but, life has put that on hold. Now that things are as stable as my son allows them to be, I am currently talking to a recruiter again working on transferring from the guard to AD with an 18x contract. I hope to get a ship date for about this time next year.
I would like to thank you guys for PS.com and SOCNET.

Hi, I'm new to the board and I just wanted to say that its a great resource tool for both wannabe SF and soldiers that do not want to attempt SF. The resources found here for foot care, ruck marching, and even PT are excellent. That being said, a little information about myself is in order.
I joined the Maryland National Guard in 97 after graduation from High School, completed AIT in 98 as a 45B (small arms/ towed artillery repairer). After completion, the Guard had no use for me so I reclassed as a 92Y (supply jerk). While spending time in an AVN unit doing supply it became aparrent that I did not like what I was doing with my career so I wanted to move on to something I would enjoy. I moved to an infantry unit and got reclassified again as a 11B. By 2004/05 I let my contract run out and was released. In 2006 I am looking to come back.
For a civilian job I go to a local university where I study Computer science as well as History. I also work as a contractor for the DoD doing "stuff". In my free time I like to bike, shoot, hike, write computer programs and read

Howdy! I wanted to introduce myself. I was a SGT 11B40 in the MD Guard until 2005 when I let my contract end and now Im looking to get back in. My spare time I like to Hike, bike, shoot, computer program, and read. I currently attend a local University where I study Computer science and History.
For a more indepth introduction I made another post on the boards so that I wouldn't clutter up this thread.
Merged your special intro thread into this one. We made this thread so other forum topics wouldn't get cluttered up. Apparently you must think we're stupid and your special thus requiring your own intro thread. Recommend you read and think before posting anymore.

Howdy. My name is Taylor. I am a 14S in the ND National Guard. I spent a year in Iraq and am in school again. I am a college student at UND majoring in Political Science with a minor in International business. I like to work out. I teach Shotokan Karate. I like to hunt and fish. Next year I will be attending the SFAS. I am not sure the route I am going to take. Either transfer to an SF guard unit in UT or CO; or quit the guard and sign an 18X contract with the active Army. That's why I'm here is to help me make the decision. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey folks.
Spent 14 years in the ARNG. Was in an NG SF unit, but never got tabbed. I ETS'd about 5 years ago, and would like to get back in and give it another try (will have to divorce the wife and sell the house first...)
My name is Nick Harris. I am 18 years old and preparing to join the University of Arizona NROTC as a Marine Corps option midshipman. Today a member of this site came into the store where I am employed and after a brief exchange, handed me one of the site's cards.
I come here somewhat unsure of what I intend to find out. I am confident that I will be a first rate Marine Corps officer and fully intend to serve with honor and professionalism wherever the Corps plans to place me. I realize this site is devoted to Special Forces and those interested in joining, and I have not ruled out Recon as a possability but I feel that right now it is too early to plan my career in detail. I suppose what I am here for is guidance and the opinion of professional warriors who are burdened niether with the responsability of a personal relationship with me (like my father and any of those who work with him) or that of training me (such as the major in charge of my instruction)
I appologize for the long- windedness of my introduction and I'm sure it invites jokes about me knowing too many words to be a Marine or a junior officer.
Welcome Harris,
All the best through ROTC. Just wondering who has the cards. :)
TS.... You weren't just down by ASU lately were ya? Or Phoenix? Not clear where Harris was when he got the card. Never showed me that card. I'm always the last to know. ;) Ohhhhhhhh
I enlisted as a REP 63 back in 1981 through the 12th group in OKC. Spent 10 years there, then ETS'd in 1991. Had a great time, but couldn't mesh military career with law practice. Had some of the best soldiers in the Army on my team. Great bunch of guys.
Now, I shoot quite a bit and tend my law practice in a small Oklahoma town. I keep in touch with the guys the best I can. If you ran into me while in the military, please let me know.

Hey Guys,
About me: NON-SF 16 year NG/USAR vet. Have been enlisted/officer/now Warrant Officer in the MP Corps since 1990. On the civilian side, I'm a Deputy U.S. Marshal, assigned to our Special Operations Group (don't let the name fool you), presently in Baghdad on a 6 month TDY.
About you: I've been an SF wannabe from day one. However (excuse follows) I've never lived within 800 miles of an NG SF unit. :boohoo I have the utmost respect for US Army Special Forces. I work with a former 10th Grp/current 19th Gp guy, and have met/worked with several guys here in Iraq. Top notch all.
I look forward to networking with professionals on this site. Thanks

Good afternoon gentlemen!
I enlisted in 1971 as an ASA 98B Cryptanalysis Specialist. ETSed in 1974 went back to school and ROTC. In 1977 returned to active service as an Infantry officer. In 1980 went to SFOC and in Feb 1981 landed in Bad Tolz 1/10 SFG ODA 5 (later ODA 123) as the XO, then as the Det Cdr. Was the Bn S4, then back to CONUS for AOAC. ETSed and went to 12th Group, then an IMA at JFKSWIC.
Right now I'm the CIO for a finacial services company in Orlando, FL and prior to that spent 15 years with BanK of America/NationsBank in technology.
Stumbled on this site today so I reigstered.

My name is Scott Andrews. I am 21 years old and I am currently a student but recently come to the realization that it, isn’t for me. I am preparing to enlist in the Army next summer, if all goes well, under an 18x contract. I talked a bit with my recruiter as well as my cousin, who some time back, was enlisted as an Army linguist. She has been a great help in educating me on some of the things I will need to help in my goal. She provided me with the books “Masters of Chaos” and “Inside Delta Force” which led me into more and more research and some discussions with my recruiter, and more research, which eventually led me here. My family comes from a long line of professional servicemen, most recently my Uncle, Jerzy Kichner retired as a Captain in the Coast Guard after 30+ years, my cousin is a cadet in the Coast Guard Academy, his 2 half brothers are currently officers in the Coast Guard, and my brother had been a cadet but realized military life was not for him. As to why I would choose Army Special Forces over the Coast Guard that so many of my family has chosen? I grew up as a 2nd generation American, from a family that was Polish refugees in WW2, the thing they talk about most is how there was no one there for them in their time of need. Given the motto of the Special Forces of liberating the oppressed it just felt like the right place for me, and my family had a long history of service within the Polish Army, my great Grandfather, Jozef Maziec, being a “Virtuti Militari” recipient at the age of 19, for his rescue of superior officers on more then on occasion during the Polish-Soviet War 1919-1920. Basically a part of me wants to re-establish that old tradition, as well as serve my country and give back a little bit of what it gave to me and my family. Anyway, I’ve rambled on enough and I’m sure you all have better things to do then read this.
Howdy yall. I found this website through lightfighter and GOTX. Been a member there for a while which convinced me to join up with Army ROTC (I was already in college, might as well finish up, as much as I question the decision of becoming and officer...) I will graduate next year and hope to branch Infanty or Aviation (long shot). If not those, I pray to God I get something Combat Arms.
I am looking into the opportunities available to me as an officer in the SF community. This seems like a great place to start.

Actually if you have reservations about becoming an officer you probably ought to look at enlisting or pursuing an 18X contract.

My reservations are not ones that pertain to the duties of an officer, I enjoy leading and the evaluations of my leadership(both at school and at Fort Lewis this summer) say that I do a pretty good job of it. However, the way they do branch assignments is what bothers me. I could end up Infantry (ideally) or Chemical simply based on what needs the Army has. The possibility of being stuck in a pogue job is very high, along with riding a desk after only a few years with feet on the ground.
I have no reservations about enlisting either, it is easier to branch what you want (even if the 18x doesnt work out, your still 11B, unlike the as an officer) along with the fact that I would like to stay on the fighting side of things as long as possible. Either route I would ideally stay in for the full 20 + years.
I have already signed the contract and have been in ROTC for 3 years. They have been paying for my college and I now am "in debt" to them. I have been looking into my options upon graduation next year, and I want to be well informed as to what options are available for me however the next year works out.

Yes, that is correct and everyone is subject to same rules of the needs of the Army, but branch assignments are made based on demonstrated potential for successful service in whatever branch you get. You still have an option by seeking a branch transfer after you have served the minimum amount of time in the assigned branch. However, your options will be limited if you fail to perform to the best of your ability even in "pogue jobs" if that is your initial fate. Regardless of your branch, everyone reaches that time when they have to "ride a desk" and even those jobs are important because your level of performance is going to impact on those who are depending on you to fullfill the responsibilities of a staff officer. No one likes them, but we all have been there. If you are successful in obtaining a commission, you will be too. The key is to do whatever you do to the best of your ability. Even if you are in charge of the mess kit repair platoon, your level of performance will pay dividends for both the soldiers for whom you are responsible and being looked upon as a can do troop when the opportunity comes for you to compete against your peers for a more favorable assignment. Remember the Army is a team, it has many players and many functions non of which are insignificant. Good luck in your goals and while I may just be reading more into your post than is there, I would lighten up a little on the attitude least some non-fighting, desk bound pogue cuts you some orders to be the Musk-Ox control officer in Rejiavick, Iceland.
My names Matt, I'm begining what I hope will be a long career in the Canadian Military. I'm here because I find that there is always something to learn which I plan to do by mostly reading not posting. Thanks for having me here.
Matt
I will glady serve where ever the Army decides is best for me. I have no quams with being the best transportation officer I can be if that is what I am assigned. That said, I wouldnt have any problems being an 11Bravo E-2 either. I realize it is all about service, and that is why I chose this career field. However, I would prefer to serve my country in certain jobs more than others. SF or SOF would be the ultimate career field if I was somehow given the opportunity and was successful. I did not mean for that last post to come off the way that you may have interpreted it.
Thank you all for your responses already, Rick

I do not quite know how to take that remark. I have known many NCO's that were better "leaders" than the officers under which they served. I have known officers and NCO that were not worth a pound of salt. NCO's and Officers have different rolls to play but it is the same trates that make an NCO or officer excell at what they do!

I guess I didn't spell it out well enough, what I was trying to covey was that I had had experience as a senior NCO, CWO, and O.
I fully concur that the traits that make a leader, are needed in all grade structures, I never felt that I would make a good CSM, I figured I could do a good job at any other level.

You looking for clarification on my post or CPTAUSRET?
CAPAUSRET. "You will not be a good O if you do not possees those traits that make an Officer a leader"....... CAPAUSRET could transition from senior NCO, to WO, and to Captain because he had/has the traits of a leader. The same traits make or break you as an NCO or Officer.
It isn't the first time there have been comments made that infer if you don't have the traits to be a good leader you would do better as an NCO. I happen to believe that every NCO in SF has or should have excellent leadership traits or they don't belong in SF. Being on a team in one of the Groups is not the place to learn leadership traits.
If you don't have the required traits, go find a slot in a unit as a soldier. Don' try to develope them while serving on an SF team.
My rant for the day. Best wishes to all.

I guess you didn't read my response to your post.
This is the last site where you see will NCO's demeaned, I am in a hurry therefore shouldn't be posting, but if you gleaned that from this board you must have misread something.

Guten Tag jederman. I was just introduced to this site, I am an 18D stuck in SWC right now, if anyone has come from SWTG lately they know the feeling. I'm headed for 10th Group hopefully sometime around late Oct. (Carson) I know a couple who've lived out there, I have heard that it's really amazing. Nice to be among brothers.
Congrats, SpcDoc 84 on making it this far, my hat is off to you.

I concur, there seems to be a disconnect somewhere between intention and perception. No one on this board would ever think that rank has anything to do with leadership or leadership potential within Special Forces, or in the rest of the Army for that matter. Decisions on whether to follow an officer or enlisted career path are personal in nature and from my limited experience have absolutely nothing to do with whether or not a person is a good leader or has leadership potential. If anyone wants to pursue this particular discussion or explore observations or opinions on this subject then let me know and I'll start a new thread.
Airborne,
Hey all...hope things are going well. I am a student at Purdue University and currently in the ARNG in 151 INF DET (LRS). I graduate and ETS in December and currently signing up for active duty 18X. I am looking for a mentor to help me through the pipeline and with questions.
Good Day!

Can't comment on 10th Group life, but I can assure you that life in Colorado is going to be much different than what you are used to.
Mountains, blue skies, no humidity, less congested, affordable housing. Colorado Springs is within an hour of everything!
My name is Neil. I am about to start my journey to becoma a Green Beret. I am very psyched about everything that is going on. I am going to be an 18E with 7th group. I am going to be going to jump school in January, and the rest of the course will start in February. If anyone has any hints to help me out with the course, that would be greatly appretiated. I know that things are always changing, but any little bit of information would help.
Thanks,
Neil

That's awesome, I can't wait to go out there. I heard from a study done by a marriage counsler that out of all the posts gone to, everyone who lived in CO, their marriage was the best out there, and Bragg was the worst...
Just thought I'd introduce myself as another lurker. This is a great site; nicely maintained with good information and knowledgeable people.
Hello everyone,
I joined the reserves in 98 as a 88m, wanted to do more, so I reclassed to 31b(95b), got deployed march 03 to Iraq worked for a year as a team leader running convoy escorts, was injured, sent back to the states, went through a divorce, currently waiting to get off med hold after next operation, 8 yr contract over on 27aug, I Couldn't be happier with my life right now. I know I'm a lifer when it comes to the army. I already finished school with a BFA, and have worked in the IT business for years. So now I'm just trying to figure out where I'm headed. I know I want to stay in the AR or NG, I don't believe in you can only do one thing in life. So as part of my research I read "Get Selected" which brought me to this site. I'm using this time I have left on med hold to prepare physically and mentally for SFAS, and for whatever comes my way in life. I'm going to re-enlist over to the FL-NG into the 20th SFG, I will do my best to become a 18E and go on from there with no regrets. Ether way I'm staying in for life. I'm looking forward to getting as much "from the horses mouth" info I can get. I appreciate the chance to be a part of this community and thanks for having me as a guest.

For one, we have no clue. Razor took it easy on you. You didn't fill out your profile. I was late getting here, but was pointed this direction by a long time member on this board. Thanks RC.
It would BEHOOVE you ( one of my all time, back in Basic Training, Smokey sayings ) to read the simple instructions and stickies pertaining to filling out your profile. Post Haste might be too slow. Gentleman, my name is Clay Moore. I am 27 years old, and have been in the Wyoming National Guard for about 10 years now with about 5 ½ active and about 4 in a drilling status. I’m an AGR Supply Sergeant for a Field Artillery Battalion, and I am looking to pursue my dream of Special Forces. I’m not getting any younger, and I don’t enjoy my current career field, so I have decided that it is time to act. I’m currently deployed in Iraq, using every ounce of down time to research and prepare for it. I am an avid fan of the Special Forces community, and everything they do. I believe Special Forces are an excellent part of a solution for our current world situation, and I want to be part of it. That being said I must say this is an extremely informative site, and thanks to all who are willing to share with the less informed.

Good Day All,
I am a reitred E-8 that had spent my last 12.5 years of military service in 5th SFG(A). Started my military career as a 19E then switched to 19K when M1A1s started rolling out. After being a tanker for awhile decided to make the jump to SF. Had a lot of fun while being on a team. Participated in Desert Shield/Storm, Somolia, Kosovo, and Afghanistan as well as numerous peace related missions throughout the Middle East. Been to alot of places that probably will never go back to. Now I work as a contractor on Ft Hood working on Force 21 battlefield computer systems. Came across this site while searching for SF related sites on the internet. Hope to make some contibutions to the site and answer questions regarding SF life for those wannabes.

Welcome aboard - make sure to read all the stickies.
Hello folks. Was refered to you guys and am now making my first entry.
Heres a Bio:
My name is Ed. I joined the Army in 74 and went to the Q course in 77. Assigned 2/5th. Greenlight projects allowed for access to specialty schools. As a E5 I was extremely fortunate to get HALO, SCUB, Sniper, Dive Supervisor and HALO Jump Master within the first 18 monts in the unit. Spent first years on 541 on Smoke Bomb Hill right next to the HALO school office. Did same as everybody else for a few years. Iran, Egypt, Saudi etc. Worked in the OLD SCUBA locker accross from the MATA mile for a while and got the SCUBA bug. Became a civilian instructor. Was 05B became 31V crossed trained 11B/11C. Became 18E/18F Was in the first class of 180As ever in June of 84. Returned to 5th as a W2 and worked at Mott Lake for 4 years teaching SOT, ODA 555. DLI Arabic, Desert Storm, Few good MTTs, projects etc. Ran 5th Group SCUBA locker for a few years before being dragged (claw marks are still in the pavement to prove it) to Group S3 where I ran the vault and all the projects that go along with it for a few years. Went to S5 to revamp and enhance the Group Language program and retired as the Group Senior Warrant 180A as a W4 in 2000.
Couldn't find a real job so I built a training complex with 5 ranges and 1700 Acres of hunting and training area below Ft Campbell called Rattlesnake Ridge Training Center. I now live the austire and broke life of a self employed instructor-contractor/janitor/tractor driver. I am a Class III manufacture and am building a collection of full auto and suppressors for sale and training. I am a part time Deputy on the Montgomery County Sheriff Department reserves learning the Law Enforcement side of life.
I am happy to be here and am very pleased to see the controll and descipline given to postings. I will try to follow the rules and welcome on the spot corrections when I don't. My posting may be infrequent as travel and training takes much of my time. I look forward to talking with you all.... Ed OUt.

No x_.... More like "fall apart Friday." ;) Besides I had just spent four hours moving from a second floor apartment to the U-Haul, then off loading it in storage. It was on the cooler side though. About 103. I didn't drink any water, Didn't want to waste time. Wanted it over with. Stuff was cramping up. had to type short. :D

Hello all QP's and friends,
I just joined this site last night, and wanted you to know who I am; I am an E6 on AD right now in Iraq serving as an operational security member and compound medic for other AD soldiers and DoD personnel. I am currently in the process of linking up with an SF retention NCO to reenlist for SF. That is a small amount about me in a nutshell, and I’m glad to be here and reading the wealth of knowledge on this site. I have found allot to be of good help to me, thank you.
Steven
So right after I posted my introduction, I saw Reapers thread about not putting it on that page, and to post it on this one. I know the QP's are going to give me hell about my lack of SA, so I figured I could at least post one on the correct page in an attempt to show I did realize my mistake and not get banned from the site.:D
Steve
DCAT Medic - It's fixed now. Please read the stickies before posting again. Then follow the guidelines. The rules help preserve a quality experience for everyone. First impressions are important. Peregrino

Friend introduced this site to me and thought I would enjoy the company here. Served 8.5 years in the Army as an Infantryman, but got out to pursue similiar work in the semi-civilian sector.
Forgive my profile for being somewhat barren, I am very leary of posting my BIO/history online...and I am sure some of you folks can appreciate/understand this...nothing special anyhow.
Currently deployed OCONUS, but looking forward to gleaning any information that I can from here.....BIG eyes, BIG ears...small mouth, however I'll contribute when I have some relevant and intelligable information to share.

Good afternoon everyone,
I'll be quick. I leave for SFAS on OCT 15th... if anyone has any helpful advice, I
sure could use it. Being stationed at Ft. Stewart, I don't have access to an
active duty mentor and I feel like I'm bangin' my head against a wall with some
of the training that I've been doing.
mlalvarez,
You might be surprised at the staggering number (the majority, actually) of SF soldiers that entered into training without even the thought of a mentor. You need to be self-starting and able to motivate yourself to be successful, not dependent on others for your mental and/or physical strength.
With that said, please read through all applicable posts here (the search feature is helpful in this), and consider purchasing the book "Get Selected" through the Special Operations Warrior Foundation http://www.specialops.org/. It has much of the information for which you seem to be searching.
Hello everyone.

Not too much worth writing in my introduction. I'm just another ordnance officer on my way to SF via some time in the 82d. I didn't choose ordnance but loved the 82d. I'm slated to go to 1st SFG which is ironic as I spent 16 years of my life on McChord AFB and even went to college in Washington (WSU in case it matters).
I look foward to learning from the extremely diverse knowledge and opinions out there.

Hello everyone from Texas, I'm a early 30s father of one, married man who comes from a family of Warriors. My Dad's father was in the Army in WWII and served in the Navy during the Korean War. My dad missed Nam, and I came in at the ass end of Desert Storm. I spent some time in Gitmo helping baby sit Cubans at Camp x-ray. I injured my back, and had to learn to look elsewhere for my future. My wife's late father was a Nam vet who served in the Marines, and her mother works for the Govt. I have two brother in laws one served in the Core, and the other was a supply sergeant in the Army.

Hi, i just stumbled across this site and thought id stick around awhile if yall dont mind. I spent 2 yrs with the 82nd in 3/73rd armor ( when they still had sheridans). Unfortunately i was young and stupid ( funny how they go hand in hand sometimes) and was politely asked to go play with someone else. after a 10 yr break in service i decided enough was enough. i missed it. so i joined the natinoal guard. after going to a 2 week mosq course (11B) i was immediately put on state orders to prep to go to iraq. i spent the entire part of a year there in a gun hatch covering my buddy's asses.i currently am still in the guard in arkansas and work full time at my armory. i've always been interested in special forces. I dont know if i'll ever try to join, but i always take advantage of gaining knowledge from the men who know. i have filled out my profile and hope that i am posting this in the correct place. If not, on the spot corrections are greatly appreciated.Again ,thank you for allowing me to spend this time learning from your experience and knowledge.

Yum Yum! CHOMP! CHOMP!
Welcome aboard College Boy. School and major?
We know you from SOCNET? Were you injured or wounded?
No I'm not from SOCNET? But I did look it up. Thanks for the info. :) I was injured. I had just reached my year mark for boots on ground and had just escorted a white convoy from Navistar to Tilil airbase which was a candy run for us.(get back in enough time for a little stretch before our not convoy escort). Well the AF security would not allow the non-military drivers in and we had been waiting in the holding area off camp for about three hours when our new PL told us to drive the flatbeds ourselves and help unload them so we can backhaul and get home. While alot of the equipment chained on the back of the flatbeds had moved or something causing alot of pressure and we were having a hard time get the chain bindings off so we had to use breaker bars. Well I went over to the last binding on the truck I was working on slipped on the breaker bar and the binding snapped smashing the breaker bar into my face. Broke the lower jaw and fractured teeth on the upper jaw. A bittersweet injury if ever there was one. Spent a whole year lucking out and then this happens. Saved me another 5 months of Iraq, but cost me 2 years already of medical, and took me away from my team. I'm going insane being stuck in limbo as far as life goes last couple years. I can't go forwarded in any aspect of life until the medical is done. Everything happens for a reason and I just roll with it all the way. I'm taking this time to learn and grow as much as I can.
