Good afternoon gents,
I stumbled on this site a few months back, looking for some tidbits while I get ready for selection. I am 27, 1LT in a Transportation Co (Guard) in Pennsylvania. I have gone through SFREs in NC and continue to await IST into the NC guard. Once IST is complete, ill be off to SFAS. It might be odd hearing a Transportation Officer going this route, but this is the direction I wish to pursue.
If you are a junior officer in an non-combat arms branch, like myself, it is imperative to get with your readiness NCO (and SF unit transitioning into) and stay on top of specific paper work needed!
In the mean time, I enjoy daily workouts and finding new methods to improve my overall fitness.
Rich
Good morning gentlemen:
I originally was going to wait until I commission to introduce myself but decided it would be best to write an introduction so that I can reach out to members on the site (there are quite a few posts/threads that have been answered hundreds of times either somewhere on this forum or elsewhere on the internet and I won't add to that clutter).
In January, I signed my 09S contract for active duty. I want to branch Infantry, Armor, or Engineering. I am currently double majoring in Computer Engineering and Applied Mathematics and am minoring in Physics with a 3.65 GPA and am graduating this month.
I have worked as a researcher at my university and have a book chapter published on neural networks. I hope to publish one or two more papers before I ship to basic as I wish to apply to be an instructor at West Point in the future. I imagine it will be difficult to conduct research while active duty.
As for hobbies, almost all of my free time is spent training BJJ or Muay Thai. I try to train at least 8-10 hours per week. I also run and do calisthenics two to three times per week to increase my max number of pushups, situps, and decrease my runtime. I also like to read and am currently teaching myself Latin.
As far as research for Special Forces goes, I have read Get Selected by LTC Joseph Martin and have read through much of this site. It will be about 3 years before I can even attend SFAS so I am much more concerned about doing well at OCS so that I can branch Infantry.
If any of you wish to reach out or have any advice for me (whether you be SF or not) I encourage you to me a PM. This is the main reason why I am posting in the first place.
Very Respectfully,
Paul
Welcome and the very best of luck! Train hard.
Welcome and the very best of luck! Train hard.
Thank you, Chief Warrant Officer. I always do!

First thing first, thank you to all of you who take time out of your day to answer everyone's question about SF. I came to this website with a million and one questions and after reading through this forum for the past 3 days they have all been answered and more.
My name is Jeffrey, I was born in Honduras and moved here to the US at the age of 7. I have been raised all my life 20 minutes from D.C. in Northern Virginia. I have come to love this country and all the opportunities it has given me and my family. I will be joining the Army as an 11x with hopefully an option 4. I have gone through MEPS and been cleared, just waiting to sign my contract. Initially I wanted to join as an 18x but being a permanent resident I will go the route of joining first and then submitting my SF packet. I have read Get Selected twice now. With this forum and Get Selected I'm on full throttle with "Cast or Tab." I look forward to learning more from this forum as I go through my journey in the Army. Thanks for having me and thanks for making this site possible.

Greetings,
My name is Brian and it is great to be apart of this site! I have gained a lot of useful information from the QPs in many threads prior to going to SFQC in 2006 and throughout my attendance in the "Q" as a young 18E candidate. I have also returned many times to this site while deployed looking up great information on either MOS specific topics or relevant theater knowledge. It's been way to long to not be a member here!!
I graduated the "Q" in 2007 and was assigned to 1/10 SFG(A) as an 18E in late 2007. Since then I have served on multiple deployments across Eastern Europe, Africa and Afghanistan. It has been one hell of a ride with 10 years straight team time; serving on SFOD-As 0124, 0334,0316 and 0314-most of those years spent on MFF teams.
I am currently a 180A and serve as the TSD OIC for 10th SFG(A). I have 20 years of overall military service (also had a three year break in service before I came back in and went SF). Prior MOS's include; 11C, 88N, and of course 18E.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to participate in some worthwhile conversations and lend some knowledge and experience as well as continue learning from others and adding to my toolbox-this is a great place to do both!
Love the job, love the brotherhood,
DOL!

Hey gents,
Infantry Officer in the USMC(R). Cop in my other life. Currently downrange and had an opportunity to spend a day with an ODA Tm for some down time training. Great group of guys. True professionals and incredibly generous with their time for my Marines.
Until now I knew basically zero about Army SF/ODA. Had no idea there was a reserve option through the NG. Was planning on getting out after this pump and focussing on civ life, but this experience has me reconsidering. I've been researching the USMC officer to NG SF enlisted process. As a grunt officer in a rifle company, you're spoiled by being given the best job up front (Plt Cmdr), and that time is coming to an end for me.
This site has been a tremendous resource. I've sent a request for info via the generic email addresses to the Rhode Island (19) and Massachusetts (20) units to find out about any upcoming SFREs when I get back home. Waiting to hear back. Email/WhatsApp is my only comm capability at the moment.

Good afternoon,
I have been observing this forum as a guest since I began my train-up for SFAS about six months ago. I am thankful, and happy to say that all of my questions have been answered by those who have contributed to this wealth of knowledge in the past. I recently enlisted under a REP-63 contract with the Utah ARNG and as my ship date approaches (September) I plan on posting regularly to the "What are you currently doing to prepare for SFAS or SFRE" Thread as it is one of many that has helped me to train.
My name is Max and I am 22 years old. I speak Swedish and am currently working on French and Spanish. I am a certified EMT and a fabricator by trade. After trying to enlist for almost a year all I can say is that every day is a step forward and a chance to become stronger. This forum is a wonderful tool to help with that goal. I hope one day to be able to contribute to this forum as a QP but today I am thankful for the knowledge at hand.
Sincerely,
Max

Greetings all from Oz.
Need to be pardoned for using a wrong page.
I came here specifically to remember the SF ambiance; to try to find info about a former and eternal love.
As well I was hoping to connect with anyone who RnRd in Sydney, specifically at the Oceanic Hotel Coogee. My brother was the young manager there in late 60s and 70s. There were friendships made and lost. He is battling prostate cancer and we often talk about that wonderful time.Lots of you came back 3 and even 4 times.
Thought it might be a way to cheer him up as he is great at recognising names. He attended some of your weddings and generally hid you from JAG. I am his little sister and sat in awe and wonder listening to your stories.
Anyway. Nice to be here.
We just heard that our navy pilots were lasered by chinese "trawlers" in the south china seas. Who knows? Maybe you'll be back here some day to back up the 19000 marines stationed at Darwin!
Ciao ladies and gents...off for a surf.
Hello,
I was in the Army for a little under two years and was discharged for misconduct. After several recruiters and years of trying to get back in, last year I got a misconduct waiver approved and re-enlisted onto active duty. Though I passed at MEPS, I failed the hearing test at 30th AG and was medically discharged within a month. I am currently trying to re-enlist again, my goal is to become a Special Forces soldier. I came to this site to learn as much as I can and to seek a mentor.

iintc22,
You may want to ask yourself if a military career path is for you. Not trying to dissuade you from achieving your dream of going SF but from the past issues you listed it doesn't look like things are stacking up in your favor. I admire the never quit attitude and your lofty goals but some times you have to call it what it is...a spade is a spade type thing. However if you continue to pursue your military re-entry I wish you the best of luck. Your 25m target should just focus on getting back in the door-the SF path is still a 1000m shot. In the mean time you can learn a lot just from visiting the other forums and posts available in this site.

In response to your PM (not sure if you got my response there due to latency issues on my computer):
I served all my regular Army time before I went SF. I had a three year break in service and when I came back in on active duty they re-classed me from the Infantry to the Transportation Core. Umm, yeah that. I guess at the time the Transportation Core were getting blown up with IEDs causing a deficit in all MOSs. When I came back in my sole purpose was to go SF, the MOS change didn’t exempt me from attending SFAS…and the rest is history.
As for your question about how commands view guys going over to the SOF side of the house…depends on the command. In the Infantry I saw a lot of my peers get black listed by the units; platoon leadership would keep them busy with details as much as possible reducing their personal time to train up. This made some really late nights for most guys. However, this wasn’t the case for me, since I was re-classed to a soft skill MOS and being the only Infantry guy in the unit coupled with extreme motivation to not serve the rest of my career in that God forsaken MOS-I out performed everybody in the unit, won a bunch of awards for them and also became the lead master trainer for all BN Infantry skill level tasks/training. The latter put me in good graces with the BC and CSM, additionally I scored over 300 on the PT test extended scale allowing me to be able to conduct my own training during morning PT instead of doing unit exercises. So within less than a year in the unit I passed selection, while awaiting orders for SFQC the unit just basically left me alone. From what I’ve seen and heard my case wasn’t the norm. Most (defiantly not all) guys that try out for SF tend to be high unit performers and leaders. Senior NCOs and CMDRs don’t like to lose their talent or experienced guys so they make life a lot harder. Some are just jealous or emotional due to maybe having tried out themselves and getting non-selected, some feel you are betraying the unit by wanting to leave or possibly just being too afraid to even try out themselves (fear of failure).
Just to note; commanders cannot stop someone from attending SFAS unless they are deployed/deploying or have an extenuating circumstance. Once you get a go from an SF recruiter and get orders to attend SFAS the rest is on you. You can let the chain of command know what your intentions are out of curtesy but they can’t stop you just because they don’t want you to leave the unit. Again if this happens, it might be a battle and not an easy process to overcome with the unit but not impossible.
Lastly, when I came back in on active status an 18X program was not available for me as well. In hindsight this was a good thing. SOPC is a great course for physical conditioning-most guys that go through it are PT/ruck marching studs. I did know a few prior service guys that got into the program, but hated it being older more experienced guys with families because they were always under cadre control (resembling the basic training environment). For example, the after our class was selected and we got back to main post all the SOPC guys had to go back to the barracks and clean for a GI inspection while all the regular Army dudes got to go out and celebrate and smash beers together.
Anyway, wish you the best of luck on your journey through your own circumstances-just make wise, informed decisions.

Active duty from 08-14. Non selected in October-nov 2011 class. 257. Oef oif 15Q
I graduated from SFTG in 1968.
Before that I spent three years majoring in electrical engineering and working offshore in the summers before dropping out and joining the Army. My father’s oilfield work moved us around a lot and along the way I’d learned to speak some Spanish.
I was recruited on graduation from basic at Ft. Polk, did 12B AIT at Ft. Leonard Wood followed by jump school at Benning and then SFTG as an 05B. I can still copy CW, though a lot more slowly than back then, and I still remember the GRC109 as well as how much that damned generator weighed in the field.
Then it was TDY to DLIEC at Ft. Myer where I improved my Spanish followed by assignment to the 8th Group at Gulick. Graduated from AFTSS there, along with the NCO Academy.
Looking back I have no idea why, but I volunteered for Nam and requested assignment to the 5th group. When I got to Bien Hoa the Army had other ideas. They assigned me to Co F, 75th Rangers as a LRRP team leader. Being smart people, the Rangers sent me to Recondo School in Nha Trang before they’d trust me with a team – a good thing.
After graduating from Recondo school I ran LRRP operations out of Cu Chi until ETS in 1970. I intended to go back to school when I got out, but college life looked like a bad fit so I went back to work offshore, another good thing.
When I came back to school a year later I had a better attitude and a very committed approach as well as a wife and the GI Bill. I worked part time while earning a BS in marketing and used the rest of the GI Bill to get my MBA.
I was a graduate assistant for a marketing professor while working on my masters, and the two of us started a Midwestern B to B ad agency & direct mail firm when I got out of school. Seventeen years later I sold out and returned to Louisiana where I started another ad agency, this time with a more industrial focus, and today I’m semi-retired, staying in decent shape for an old man and enjoying life.
I’m here to listen and learn about how much things have changed in the last 50 years, and to continue to be amazed at how much better trained, better equipped and more fit you all are than I was.
Thanks for reading this.

How’s it going gents? My name is Sean I am 21 years old, I have been on the website for a few years and haven’t logged in since 2017. I am currently on my second deployment and have been surrounded by some SF guys and they along with my squad leader going to SFAS in the fall have influenced me to look into going myself. I have 19 months left in the army and I am going to Ranger school in September then deploying again shortly after graduation. My intent is to re-enlist on deployment get the 6 month college deal, PRK and then eventually drop a packet for SFAS. I will school myself up with the multitude of information provided here.
Thanks,
Sean

Hello,
An 18Xray currently in airborne school excited to go to selection. I’m a fairly fit individual but I can always get better. I made an account before I left for OSUT and been browsing this site for a few months before that. I’m getting relatively close to game day and want to post some on the site.

Hello everyone,
I spent an enlistment in the National Guard as a 12N and worked my civilian job as a Law Enforcement Officer in Missouri. After my National Guard Contract ended I enlisted as an 18X in the Regular Army around Dec 2018.
I was selected in class 07-19 and am currently waiting to start the SFQC.
I have been lurking on this board for quite some time, thank you for this open source of valuable information.

I've been on here for a while, however just recently finished the course and will be staying in NC as an 18B. I am unsure what the vetting requirements are but I can provide whatever is needed.
I am mostly just reading, but I am interested in any input for a ~250 round, 25 meter flat range, rifle and pistol POI focused on intermediate level shooters. I'll make a post in the Bravo Training thread with what I have so far.

My point??
Until such time as you have something worth saying, I would strongly suggest you spend a lot of time reading, searching and keeping YOUR MOUTH SHUT.
Hints:
Find the Reaper's post "A Message to Garcia" read it, then read it again
Use your google-foo and hunt for your answers, both here and on the web.
Ask questions sparingly, there are no "new and improved" questions. Someone has already answered it. Just remember that color, date, temperature, and altitude are universal variables and don't alter the answer.
Did I tell you to find and use the SEARCH button??
Be advised, There are several titles you can earn while here.
At the top of the list are those with Quiet Professional. They are vetted BTDT Special Forces qualified members..
At the bottom are those with FTFSI & BANNED,, Don't be Carl and WIN either of these monikers.
Additionally, learn the use of OPSEC and PERSEC. This site like most has search spiders running all the time. Yahoo, Google, and persons of dubious distinction are always happy to collect YOUR information.. Proper names, addresses, unit locations....
This is a protective warning, Nuff Said??
For those that strive to become a QP, congratulation and good luck.
For the families, Thank you for your support. Your loved ones will need 110%.
For those on AD, Reserve, & Guard here for an education, Thank you for your service..

Hello all,
I am a 24 year old recent college grad from VA. I majored in Intelligence Analysis and minored in Middle Eastern Communities and Migrations. I've been in the VA Guard for nearly 6 years as a 15T.
I have been a long time lurker and I'm finally getting around to posting because I ETS from the Guard in about a month and hope to obtain an 18X slot as soon as that time comes. I'd like to be able to share any useful info I pick up through the process to other 18X hopefuls, if appropriate and allowed.
Thanks to all who run and contribute to this forum, it has been a tremendously helpful resource.
As JJ stated, welcome FNG's and good luck with your endeavors.
And yeah, take heed of JJ_BPK's advice
Hello, my name is Alex. I'm a college student about to graduate in 20 or 21. I have wanted to be a soldier since age 8. Yet I didn't know what branch or job until I heard of Green Beret- US Army Special Forces. I don't come from a military family, my great grandfather fought in WWI, and my grandfathers served (Enlisted in last hours of WWII), they are the only member of the family who served. I heard this website from a book called Get Selected! for Special Forces: How to Successfully Train for and Complete Special Forces Assessment & Selection. I plan to go to officer candidate school and see I can get in 18x. My question is what the Green Berets job, is it remotely close to the movies Green Beret with John Wayne or The 12 Strong (I am aware they're movies, not a solid documentary). My second is what are officers to be expected is it more than leading your squad or platoon to battles? I would appreciate any response or critiques.

Hey everyone! I've been a longtime lurker on this site and am just now getting around to posting this introduction.
I am a 20-year-old civilian. I earned my Associate's Degree back in the Fall of 2018 and have decided to put my education on hold in order to pursue a career in the Army Special Forces.
I am not yet sure whether I will enlist with an 18x contract or 11x. I know the Special Forces benefit from older and much more experienced men than I, so 11x seems like the right choice. However, I've also heard that if a career in Special Forces is definitely what I want, then why wait? It's something I will struggle with for a while, as I have A LOT of work to do on myself physically before I can even consider a career in the Regular Army.
I will continue to search on Google and this forum for any information that may help me answer the "am I too young and inexperienced for Special Forces?" question myself.
In the meantime, I'll go do PT.
Thanks for having me!

Hey everyone,
I’m a 30 year old, married father of two. I have no previous military service. I earned a BA in Political Science back in 2011, but have worked in Behavioral Health (therapy for kids with autism) and public utilities (I work for a major natural gas provider in California as a Field Technician, trying to get into our Distribution department).
I’m currently seeking a Rep-63 Contract through Utah and the opportunity to enter the SF Pipeline. I have a load of questions regarding my particular situation (possibly commuting to and from Utah for drill, transferring to the CA Guard SF Battalion, etc), but those can wait. There’s a long journey ahead.
I have been going through the threads to soak up as much as possible and will do my best to adhere to the standards and do my own legwork in my pursuits. I’m glad and thankful to be here, to have access to the knowledge and wisdom of current and veteran Snake Eaters. I’m here to learn and to speak as little as possible. Thank you.

Greetings,
First off I would like to thank all the Special Forces soldiers for their dedicated service and sacrifice for this country and their brothers in arms. Also thank you for your willingness to share your vast knowledge on this site to help others on their path to SF.
I am a 22 year old college student in my senior year of my engineering degree program. I am also a 13J in the Army National Guard. My goal is to go to SFAS in the spring of 2020, when I graduate college and my NG contract is up.
I have used this site since high school to learn and research about SF. I am very thankful for the QPs on this site for all the information I have gained over the years and have the upmost respect for the job you do.
Now back to PT.

Hello all on Professional Soldiers,
I currently am a college sophomore going for a Civil Engineering major.
I plan on finishing out this semester and then shipping off with an 18X.
I have already met with my local recruiter the past few weeks and I am working on my paperwork to go to MEPS.
January is when I am aiming for a spot at 18X. So until then, I will be reading "Get Selected", along with other books recommended within Get Selected.
I have been physically preparing just for SF since this summer with Hard To Kill fitness programs.
Ever since I found out about SF I immediately knew I wanted to join.

Hey everyone,
I am a prior service Naval Aircrewman. Separated a few years ago and worked as a contractor while finishing my bachelor's degree. Now a few weeks away from completing my master's degree and in the meantime I ruck, run, and do calisthenics daily in preparation for the 18X route.
Thank you to all those who contribute to this community and to those that fight for the protection of my freedoms.

Sup Brochachos,
I am a AD Marine. PCSing to 2nd Mar Div soon, wish I could have stayed at 1st Marines. Thinking about going 18E after this contract or doing an early sep towards the end.
Respect to everyone who serves.
Hello, I am 27 and Prior Service Army. I joined the military when I was 19 in the Hopes of going to Special Forces and was never given the chance while on Active Duty...Ive never really had big issues in the PT aspects as I usually score in the low 300's (extended scales) while in and even now while i've been going to school using the G.I Bill... I've been working out/running/rucking on and off and staying active every single day while also reading and doing brain games, push-ups/sit-ups/ and many other workouts to improve my over all focus and memory skills while being fatigued. I am currently working with a local Recruiter to obtain a 18X contract in the hopes of getting a shot at selection this go around. I have been reading and Taking Notes from the GET SELECTED!!! book for a about a week now while also reading "The Ugly American" "masters of chaos" "chosen soldier" and studying hard to re-take the ASVAB while I am in the The Police Academy at a local C.C. My first go-around I only got a 98 GT score, so I got a private tutor at the local Community College helping me out and teaching me new test-taking techniques I had no idea even existed before to get my scores above 110. I found this site while researching the the SF Groups and their history and areas of operation around the globe. I am here to learn and study and take in as much helpful guidance as I can from the "Quite Professionals" and make sure I prepare the right way (smarter NOT harder) and can become an asset to a ODA some day, if I actually am Selected...
-Thank You All For Your Great Service, Sacrifices, And Commitment to Our Great Nation along with the Mentorship you Show those willing to attempt your unique way of life and the understanding of it...again thank you.

Good luck, if I can do it, you can also. I started out as a mechanic (63B). I also know several who have been mechanics as well.

Greetings fellas,
I have been a lurker on this board for sometime and have used it as a resource to prepare for the Army. I have been fortunate to obtain an 18x contract for next year and am ready to get after it. Currently I am 29 years old, work as a farmer, and grew up as a swimmer, wrestler, and lacrosse player. I have been using Atomic Athlete’s War Machine program for a few months now. I am thankful for this forum as a resource and the guys who dedicate time to help us out.
Thank you,
Rackem
I’m Andrew W. Currently active duty getting ready for my first PCS. Originally from California. Looking forward to some sound advice. Went to selection last November and came unprepared for land nav. Spent too much time focusing on the end goal and not enough on my 25m target.

Good evening, I’ve been a part of this forum for awhile lurking and needed to post my intro so here I am. Currently serving at my first unit as an LPN with hopes to become a 18D. I’ve been soaking up as much as I can from this forum and plan to keep soaking it in until I pass SFAS.

Hello all and thank you so much for making a space on your website for guests like myself. I have been preparing to go 18x after I finish my bachelor's degree for several years but experienced several issues that set me back. Regardless, I am continuing to push through and hope to be ready soon. The SF mission is so vital and unique. I sincerely hope to someday have the privilege of contributing to it. In the meantime, I am just trying to hit the 25m target.

Greetings,
I made an initial post on here back in 2012 but I have been off the grid for quite sometime so I figured I would post again. I am a USAR Drill Sergeant serving out of FT Benning. I spent my first 6 years in the ARNG as an Infantry Scout, instructor and S3 NCO. I currently live in South Carolina and I am contemplating dropping my packet but would have to repay my bonus back.
I just started the 10-week THOR3 program yesterday and will let you know of the progress for future applicants to the program.
Thanks to those who post information that is critical in the determination factor for myself and other hopefuls out there.

Hi everyone,
My name is Craig and I joined this group in hopes of getting more information about my wife’s father. Archie Lombardi served in the Army from late 1954 until 1975 primarily with the 7th SFG. If anyone knew Archie we’d love to hear from you.
Thanks and thank you all for your service,
Craig
I am a 21 year old studying history and philosophy while in the reserves as a PSYOP guy. I'm going to OCS after graduation and looking to commission as an infantry officer than head to SFAS when the opportunity arises. I'm on here just looking to learn as much as I can and get tips I couldn't find anywhere else.

Found this site a few years ago while doing some online research. Lots of good info on many things here and I enjoy reading all of the comments.
I’m over 50 so will not be testing or attempting any type of high speed anything. Did 20 in the USMC did some interesting things, but nothing wild. Well into my second career and trying hard to use my brain more and body less, it saves on medical bills.

Good evening! I myself have no military service, even though my grandfather, dad and son have all served or are serving. My dad and I have stumbled upon this great site as we sit here together searching Special Forces memorabilia. My dad, who is 75 years old, served with 46th in Thailand during the late 60s. He got a smile looking at posts from the deactivated groups as he is now in the fight for his life with a recent diagnosis of lung cancer and has opted to skip chemotherapy. I will probobly never have much to add to this site, but will definately keep lurking. Thanks for the great work on this forum and God bless all yall do!

Hi all,
My name is Alex, I am 25, and I am here to read and learn as much as possible. Serving in the armed forces has been a goal of mine since I was young, but that goal was unfortunately delayed due to a multitude of circumstances. I'm not getting any younger, and am eager to forge a new path in my life with hard working and honorable people - personality traits not often found in my current industry.
Thanks very much for accepting civilians like myself onto this forum.

Good evening everyone.
My name is Michael and I currently live in Reading, Pennsylvania and formerly from Baltimore, Maryland not far from the 20th SFG Detachment in Glen Arm. I have been reading the forums for many years. While I was a Maryland State Trooper it provided me a lot of helpful tips to improve my running, pushups, sit-ups, and overall fitness level. I am now looking into joining the Guard and pushing for an 18X/Rep 63 Contract to serve with the Glen Arm Detachment if selected. I appreciate everyone's time and am glad to be here.

Former 18C - served in 1st Bn, 5th group 2013 to 2016. After separating I got MBA, did the consulting thing for a little bit, and now currently work in the defense industry in the northern VA area. Hoping to network and reconnect with some old faces.
Also, want to thank everyone for running this forum. Was extremely helpful as a resource when I initially enlisted back in 2011. To all the guys going through the process now - there is a TON of useful information here that if leveraged correctly will help set you up for success.
Thanks all.

No worries, you're a medic..so....:D
I posted an introduction a while ago before I joined the Army so I'll post an update.
I commissioned from OCS back in January and got my top branch choice, Infantry. I will graduate IBOLC in 6 weeks if I can pass the 5 mile run in 40 minutes (I barely passed the first time around running it in 39:44). IBOLC has put me in pretty bad shape so I once again need to work on my fitness.
I have received my orders and I'm going to the 11th ACR at Ft. Irwin. I have mixed feelings about this; being OPFOR will be a great experience for me but I have virtually no chance to deploy and I'll have to deal with California gun laws.
Once I graduate, I'm going to the Bradley Leadership Course, then Airborne, and then Ranger. I really want that tab and will work my ass off to prep for it, but as of now I know that my fitness is not my odds of making it through RAP week are slim.
I definitely have had a bit of a reality check on whether I have what it takes to get through SFAS. As of now, the answer is a definate no but there is no reason why that can't change before I hit 1LT promotable.
Greetings everyone,
I recently graduated college and have signed an 18X contract, where I will ship out in about a month. I'm incredibly lucky to have this opportunity and have trained incredibly hard to get the most out of my myself; both physically and mentally. I'm very happy to have found this forum with its wealth of information, and will continue to soak up everything I can before shipping. I look forward to my time here and appreciate everyone's service here to our great country.
Thank you
Old news.
Thanks for reading,

I am 27, and the reason why I signed up for this forum is because I am generally curious about SF guys as well as the SF lifestyle as well. Though I have done my own research on these matters, I felt that the best place to learn about this sphere would be on here, from former experienced SF soldiers. I intend to ask questions for any clarifications that I need as well about the line of work that you guys do.
As for a little bit about myself, I have a undergraduate degree and Master's degree, both in Business Analytics. Furthermore, I am working on trying to get another master's degree right now, as well.

26-year-old medical student. After spending nearly a decade working towards becoming a physician I am starting to consider a career change. I will finish my medical training before leaving the field (gotta finish what I started and I have a responsibility to my family to reconcile the massive student loan debt I have acquired). That being said I am ultimately here for information that will help me explore the idea of trying out for SF.

Not to bust ya out, but after trying 10 yrs to pursue something, then switch gears, and dragging along as you say "massive student loan"...
I would take a good hard look inward. I wish you the best of luck, but I don't really think you know what you want to do....ya just don't go to SF as a "whim"..
Read, a lot, and see if you have what it takes to put forth effort 110% of the time. Not just in TRAINING to become SF, but BEING SF...
Good luck

Hey, I appreciate the honesty and I hear you, right now I don’t know what I want to do.
There is a longer story to it (there always is) and feel free to pm me if you are curious.
Currently, I have no definitive plan to pursue SF, lots of research, consulting and reflection needs to take place before anything like that is set in motion. There are also other things on the table to consider. Regardless, for the time being I’m just here to learn so when a decision is made it will be an educated one.

No, I don't want to know your business.

I left the Marine Corps for college after making Sergeant in 19 months. I came home to folks saying, "Wow! Sergeant in the Marine Corps! I guess about the only thing badder than that is a Green Beret." Well that certainly put a chip on my shoulder. I worked for a doc who was an SF doc in Vietnam and between his sage advice and Robin Moore's book, I decided I had to know. So I came into the Army with the intention of going to SF and seeing Europe but was quickly talked out of it by guys saying the first think I'd need to do was dx my wife as they would issue me a new one. So I just went ahead and went to Europe as an 11C, but it didn't take many years before I realized the regular, mechanized Army was just what the Marine Corps told me it was. An SF CSM did a rotation through my unit while waiting on a Bad Toelz position to open up and when one of their teams visited Bamberg, I decided they had two eyes, two ears, a mouth and an nose right in the middle of their faces just like me. I spoke to a Captain (Major?) who had been a Team Leader in SF (it wasn't a branch yet). He told me the long separations would either make my marriage stronger or do what should have been done to it a long time ago. I just couldn't let go so I made a deal with the wife to try out Special Forces for four years and then we would revisit the issue of what I was doing. I was one of the oldest guys in the Q course, not too many of us over 30 in my class. Heck, maybe I was the only one or one of two. But I'd rather have died than quit so I just kept on pushing. Even after we had a classmate die of exposure, compounded by the lack of a spleen to fight off major infections. None of us were going to withdraw and go through that again so it was head down, butt up and keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Four years later, I came home to my wife saying, "Guess what day it is?" Needless to say I was panicked, but she let me know that she'd rather have me gone all the time and happy than home all the time and miserable like I was before.
I eventually was 10th SFG(A) NCO of the Year and runner up to a 7th SFG(A) guy who took the (first?) SOCOM NCO of the year prize, before he was booted out less than a year later. So in my mind, I did what I had to do.
I learned multiple languages and went all over the world from Africa to South America and ALL over Europe. I loved learning from other cultures but probably the best thing I learned was from my Senior Medic on my first team, Al, who along with my Chief, taught me not to get a big head. There will always be somebody better or faster than you, so you have continue to improve ALL the time, or you will be overcome at some point. It was funny because when we went to a special, gun-fighting school, we were talking and realized that all of us on that team had finished first in every Army school we ever attended. Well, needless to say, we knew that was about to come to an end.
Almost 20 years in SF, but that was a poor second to one of my team leaders, Jimmy Spoo, who spent 20 years on an A-Team!
Spending my time now helping and supporting those still under the rucksack, riding motorcycles and keeping my shooting skills up.
Boomer Green is how my last team remembered me. :)

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt, then got too fat to wear it. :(

Turned around and drove straight to Key West, Southernmost Point in the US.

I've sent the mod a LOT of names, but most are old guys who 'used' to be active, but no longer frequent this site.
Thank you to the originators of this site and to all of you who have served, or are serving, in our country’s military forces.
I have a respect and admiration for the men that served in our Special Forces, the sacrifices they have made for our country, and an interest in the history of their missions and deployments. I’m not a wannabe or a groupie.
I’ve always been interested in our country’s military history. Although I never served, someone in my ancestry had served in every major conflict since the Revolutionary War, most recently my brother having retired after 25 years in the Army. Sometime in the early-mid 1990’s I read the book “Green Berets at War”, and soon afterwards ran across a Vietnam War-era Special Forces recon team patch for sale, which I purchased. That got me started with collecting Army Special Operations items.
30 years later I have accumulated a fairly large collection of US Army Special Operations units insignia World War II to the present. My wife thinks I’m a fruitcake for accumulating all of this stuff.
I collect items pertaining to our US Army Special Operations units (Special Forces, Civil Affairs, PSYOPS, 160th SOAR, Rangers, UNPIK, SWCS, Merrill’s Marauders, FSSF, etc.) World War II to the present. I’m primarily interested in ODA team patches, metal insignia, yearbooks, guidons/flags/banners etc. I also collect US Army Parachute/Skydiving club patches.

First of all thank you guys for what you do and your service.
Here because I have the upmost respect for you guys, and like hearing what you guys think about current events.
Have the privilege of being friends with a couple guys “that work for the government” and I’ve learned to appreciate the SF mindset and try to apply it to my everyday life.
Thanks for letting me join.

Average American citizen without any military service. Minor assistance with LE in the past in helping drug enforcement. Just as a concerned citizen that happened to be in a position to help.
I have joined to be able to ask questions for purposes of expanding my own knowledge and curiosity, as well as to input on non-military topics where I have knowledge on.
I do manufacturing of all kinds (metal, plastics, woods, chemicals). Hobbies involving cracking ("hacking") and "social engineering", but not anywhere good at it. I just like learning about it given the increased threats we face in the digital age. I enjoy the talks and competitions at DEF CON when I can make it to Vegas. I also participate in activities like running and exploring abandoned urban territory, playing airsoft, and target shooting. I like volunteering in my home town whenever possible, which I believe is a healthier outlet than only complaining that things are going down the drain. (Although things are going down here in CA as you might imagine) If guys are risking their lives overseas to defend the country, then the least us civilians can do is to make sure the country doesn't collapse inward while they are gone.
I despise socialism/communism/globalism and any other kind of new age societal ideology. A large chunk of my family was executed by communists in Asia. While I didn't know them personally, the surviving members of my family did, and have clearly outlined the horror that happened and what they saw before escaping. Thank you to all who served, doing what needs to be done to preserve our way of life from those who threaten it, foreign or domestic. Keep up the good work.
Also to the moderator(s), people may not be finding the intro thread because the thread organization often sets to "last 10 days" rather than "beginning of time". They can see the sticky, but not the actual intro thread. If it can be set to "beginning of time" by default, that might reduce instance of people starting new threads.
Greetings from Australia.
My name is Wade Krawczyk and I am in my late (very late!) 50s. I was a television news cameraman, and was accredited as a military press correspondent in the 1980s. I saw a bit of two way range in Lebanon in the 1980s, and have filmed on many joint exercises with US, Australian and Allied forces. Everything from SF and Seals, to air to air refueling, aircraft carrier operations, marine beach assaults, and submarines.
I have also been a military historian and collector since the mid 1970s. I wrote five reference books on German uniforms but have now returned to studying and collecting Vietnam items. My specialities are SF (of course), Advisors, ARVN and vietnamese made berets.
At present I am lucky to own and are studying three 5th SFG groups. In case anyone has any information or knowledge of:
SFC Larry Mills (A-241 (Polei Kleng) from January, 1967 - June, 1968
dec 1971-dec 1972 Long Hai USARV training Fank
Major Robert Biddle B-32 Tay Ninh 1967 & district advisor Huong Hoa district 1971
Captain later major Simon Ecklund.
B-51 Dong Ba then Nah Trang 1964-64
1968-69 Phoenix program training centre Vung Tau.
I now work on motion pictures and television as a specialist researcher, props man & armourer. I tried to make as realistic as possible films like Hacksaw Ridge, Unbroken and the recent Australian Vietnam film 'Danger Close' the battle of Long Tan.
Thanks for your time.

Good Morning QP’s and Lurkers,
I am a prior service guy (11B, OEF) who did a lot of ‘ISR’ type work overseas. Since getting out I’ve been doing research for NASA while progressing my education.
I have a lot of space-related projects I’ve been working on that I think have relevancy and opportunities for ARSOF and the SF Regiment in general. I would be very interested in talking with any dudes who have friends with SWCS (or other players) who would be interested in studying how space technologies can assist the SF mission set.
As for myself, I want to be an ODA Team Leader. Badly. I am considering which commissioning option makes the most sense for continuing my education with grad school and what I can do productively until my ‘year group’ would be eligible for SFAS.
I really would love to spend sometime talking to QPs who are commissioned officers to see what options make the most sense. (AD vs NG, Aviation as a branch prior to SFAS/Captains Career Course, what I can bring to teams)
If anyone ever wants to talk Space, I’m your guy.

Hey guys. Glad to be here and looking forward to jumping in.
I started may career in Submarines. God did that suck. However, after serving my first tour on a boomer, I then switched out of the community and became a PACOM FAO specializing in China. However, like most military assignments, I never was sent to China :( Much good my fluency did me in South Asia.
As a FAO, I've been an ODC Chief, Foreign Liaison, and Attaché. While stationed in Maldives and Sri Lanka, I've spent a lot of time working with Special Forces due to the location and the country requirements. I'd have to say that Maldives was my favorite, but you probably don't need convincing of that. I look forward to bringing an international perspective and hoping to learn as well.
Hey all I’m a Prior service marine, served 08-12, got back into the service this year by joining the army. I’m striving to serve in SF. just finished OSUT and earned an 18 X-Ray contract while here. Hoping to learn as much as possible here throughout the rest of my career.

My name is Dean and I am a former US Marine who served 4 years honorably. My purpose for joining this site is to keep quiet, research, and soak up as much knowledge as I can as it pertains to the path of Special Forces. Ideally this will aid greatly in my arduous pursuit of the quiet professional way of life. I wish to thank all those who contribute to running and maintaining this wealth of knowledge and for allowing me to be a fly on the wall within it.

I have been a member here since 10/25/2009 when the Team Sergeant welcomed me. But i have been away since sometime in 2010. since then i migrated to FB SF Brothers and our other pages. So now with all the stuff going on many of the Brothers are looking for alternate means of maintaining coms. So i am back and will be around the perimeter visiting the different bunkers.
i will be updating my profile somewhat but cautiously as i haven't caught up on how the member vetting works here.

This is a re-introduction.
I first joined here in 2004. It remains an honor to be part of this forum.
My day job since the early 1980's is making knives, this includes the design, engineering and metallurgy of knives for production.
It has been Special Forces Soldiers who have greatly influenced my work, from Al Mar (Al Mar Knives) to Col. Rex Applegate of the OSS and continued with my friendships and guidance from members here.
Some of you may have heard of Spartan Blades, I have been involved with those former Special Forces soldiers since before they were announced as business publically.
If it wasn't for the drive and tough mindset of Chris and Anne Reeve of Chris Reeve Knives the Yarborough Knife would never have been made as we know it today.
Anne Reeve now owns and continues run the operation with the help of their son Tim who oversees the production, machines, engineers and machinists.
Chris Reeve is retired from knifemaking. Anne Reeve has been part of the operation since day one back in South Africa.
We have an "Edged Weapons" thread here. I'll try to do a better job of updating content there.
All the best to those who do the hard work.

Make sure you graduate from High School !!! After that start taking some college courses before you enlist.
The first person I knew in Group was Capt Lawrence W. Dring Jr formerly 77th. 1st, 5th, 7th, and 46th Co. We met in an airport in Spartanburg, SC We struck up a conversation and he came over to the skydiver hut which was next to main terminal. I gave him a ride home and we hit it off big.
He had been discharged from Walter Reed after he got shot up after being fragged in TET 68 (he was II Corps Mike Force and worked for Col Bob Brown) and since he did not have a degree and needed extensive rehab the Army sent him to Wofford College to get a degree.
He convinced me I should go to college so at 22 I started. He got his degree in 2 1/2 yrs and he tried to extend for another 1 1/2 years and was denied and he got sent to 46th Co.
When he left for 46th he had five Purples and when he got back he had more scars than when he left. One of which he got 3 clicks from Chinese Border.
I had been declared 4F when I turned 18 when signed up for the draft. I tried to get into a MP Co with SC Guard and made a 98 on the ASVAB so I was sent to Ft. Jackson for physical. Some low life retd NG HQ type badmouthed my enlistment.
I had already been competing in the National Smallbore Prone Championships for years and held a Master Rating and in 1973 I started high power competition with my first HP match at Camp Perry with Sgt Earl Waterman who was ARMY MTU and a sniper in Nam. In 1975 I made the 1976 US Palma Team and we won the Palma Trophy Team Match at Camp Perry competing against, England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa and others from West Indies.
I shot competition until 2013 when I got rear ended and had my neck fused which ended my competition. Guess I was fairly good, as when I quit I also held High Master NRA HP, won US Palma Trophy twice, Centenary Trophy once, Distinguished HP rifle #519 and made President's Hundred twice placing 12th and 99th. Also won three NRA National Police Championships and made the US Dewar Team twice and several regional HP rifle championships. In 82 I was on US Dewar and US Palma Team at the same time. To my knowledge no one else has done so.
Larry Dring got transferred to Bragg after he got back from 46th and I would drive up to see him. His son and me keep in touch. He is now a retired 05.
I graduated USC in 75 and the educational funding I was on required me to stay with my agency for two years after last course completed. In 1977 I started looking at federal positions and decided to try for a federal investigator position and a 05 I was shooting with one weekend gave me advice on how to fill out SF 171 form which was to list as references the three highest ranking people I knew in the government. I knew a weapons engineer for the Army since I was 11 as he and my Dad shot together since the 40s so I tracked him down and called him and asked him if I could list him as a reference.
He told me I could and asked what I was applying for and he stated my skills/knowledge would help the Army far better than I could as a federal investigator and long story short he called the Army Small Cal Weapons Lab at Picatinny Arsenal and recommended me and I got the job. Only then did I find out my friend at Rock Island was not only a wheel but was a Ferris wheel in the Army small arms community.
First off I was assigned to Product Engineering. Once a weapon system is tested and fielded the designers of it are no longer involved in case changes are needed and those changes are brought about by Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) and or Product Improvement (PIP) and the change is added in the Tech Data Package which consists of all the drawings required to manufacture that weapon along with all the fixtures utilized in their production. Very few weapon systems are "sanitary" which means they are continually changed and each change is listed as a revision on the drawing and issued a letter to designate such thus a changed drawing will have Revision A, B, C. I have seen drawings that revisions were in the AA range.
After my initial training by a guy that was phenomenal and I shall never forget what he told me the first day which was:
1. The latrine is at the end of the hall.
2. The Coffee pot is in bosses office.
3. We don't sign off on anything to make a vendor happy, we are here to get the absolute best we can for the troops and nothing less--IS THAT CLEAR??
Thus that is how i was trained. He was a old bachelor and I was not married so we rented the third floor of a large house in Milford, Pa for three years.
Within about five months I was assigned Product Engineering Responsibility for all rifles, shotguns, sub-machineguns in the Army with the exception of the M16. Subsequently I was assigned catastrophic failure investigation for M16 rifles. We had a blown up M16 come in about every five months.
A presentation was put together for the House Armed Services Committee in order to ask for 1.8 million to build four prototypes for demonstrations to our armed forces and I was one of the ones to help with the effort.
We got the funding which initiated the Dover Devil Special Projects Group and the Chief of the Small Cal Lab asked me to come to the group and I was tasked with making sure we had everything we needed before we needed it thus I was on the road or in the air transporting the materials back to Picatinny Arsenal as needed.
Once the four prototypes were finished a series of presentations to the Army and USMC were conducted. I was re- tasked to presentations at Fort Knox, Ft. Benning , Quantico and the Naval Academy where presentations were made by the two chief designers to General Officers for the first three. I made the presentation at the Naval Academy.
The first presentation was made at Ft Benning as pictured below.
https://www.secretprojects.co.uk/threads/dover-devil-mg-project.19011/
That is me firing it in the first thread when site is opened and pictures I added below of the system disassembled.
Then the Chief of the Small Cal Lab got a referral from congress from a mother whose son told her his M16A1 wasn't working in middle eastern dust. The Chief called Aberdeen Proving Ground to run a dust test to ascertain if design revisions had affected the operational characteristics. He was advised that they could get to it in two years. He asked me to drive my 3/4 ton truck down to Aberdeen and pick up 200 lbs of official test dust and I did so.
While at Aberdeen I was introduced to the Branch Chief of the Small Arms and Ammo Test Branch and he offered me a job as Small Arms Test Director and I took it for three reasons. First the Dover Devil program was winding down and our team would be going back to previous duties and the fun would have been over, two the chance of becoming a Certified Small Arms and Ammo Test Director was a once in a lifetime chance and three I would only be 500 miles from home instead of 715 miles so I could take off in the afternoon, drive half way home and sleep in the back of my truck, get up and be home by noon the following day. Last I heard there have only been about 75 people with a small arms and ammo certification bestowed on them since WW2. I accepted the position.
I was certified in about eight months and my first full test was to conduct the technical feasibility testing for the M16A1E1 (adopted as M16A2) in 1983 by USMC and Army. The USMC Project Manager wanted to interview the named test director as he wanted him to possess specific skills and I was directed to go to TECOM HQ for a meeting and went. I walked in and Maj Bruce Wincentsen USMC was the only one there and when we saw each other we both started grinning as we knew each other and had shot together for years. The interview lasted about 30 seconds after he found out I was going to be his test director and he asked me one question: "What's your home phone number?" "Here's mine."
That test consumed 244,000+ rounds and lasted about a year. As that test wound down I got a call from the Army Materials Systems Analysis Agency (AMSAA) from Lt. Col Buck Weaver (retd) who wanted me to conduct testing on the first AK-74 to come into the US possession. It was a close hold operation and they wanted it tested on the weekends when very few people were around and it was done down range where no one would see what we were doing. Buck took the targets with him every day and placed in their secure area. I did not get released to talk about it until 2016 as the first two reports are still classified and a third one has been released. See below.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=16LSk-RtaEGVqN7g_v5ZrEjAyn1o0wnhtFG8hLfGoDFg
Following that the AMSAA Analyst Weaver called me again and I was asked to lay out what the requirements should be to develop a 50 cal sniper rifle capable of MOA at 1500 yards. I told him immediately there was no Cal 50 ammo capable of such a small dispersion in our inventory and laid out other problems he was going to run into. Ultimately this led to the development of the 338 Lapua Magnum.
About that same time frame I was called by a contact I had in US Secret Service who told me he and another recommended me for a position with another agency who wanted a ordnance type which would only be 300 miles from home and I accepted. I now wish I had never accepted it but I had come to realize certain management at the Proving Ground did not possess what had been instilled in me which is reflected in item No 3 above.
Other friends that were in group are SGM Kaiser Thomas 10th(deceased), SGM William Atkinson 10th who I keep in touch with, SGM Brion Remington 10th who I keep in touch with and M/ Sgt Joe Owens Medic in Group who called me a few days ago.
Finally Lt Col Brown, SOF Magazine recommended me for NRA Board of Directors

21 Y/O Guard Soldier, 13B. Been enlisted for 3 years. Training every day for selection, going to go through SFRE in April. Really glad I found this forum, there's so much info and answers to a lot of the questions I have.
I've wanted to go SOF when I was in BCT and fell in love with the Army. At a point in my career where I believe I'm mature enough to take a shot at selection. My unit has not deployed in 12 years and I'm not eligible for any volunteer deployments (nobody likes Arty I guess), but I have been on my states Full Time Honor Guard team for 2 years.
Thanks for reading.

Hello,
As you all can see I’ve been a lurker for a little while. I first ran across this forum when I was considering enlisting, and while that never happened, this site had a significant impact on my mindset back then. I’ve enjoyed popping in and skimming posts occasionally ever since.
Between using the search button and generally not having much of value to add to threads, I never felt the need to post, but I did find a thread I felt I should chime in on...

Hi everyone!
26 years old and preparing for MEPs with hopes of getting an 18x contract. Spent most of my early life in military housing surrounded by personnel (Father served in the Navy for 21 as GM), now I would like to serve my country as well. I have been skulking the boards here for a little over a month before I created an account, just trying to absorb as much as possible from the discussions here. I don't like to talk about myself much so I hope this is intro will suffice.
Hello everyone,
I'm 20 and from the Pacific Northwest. I'm on this forum to learn more about the lifestyle of a quiet professional, and to prepare as best I can for selection.
I'm a licensed private pilot and qualified as an Incident Commander, mainly for water rescue, diving, and salvage operations. I currently speak English and Hebrew, although I'm working on my Arabic.
My interest in joining the teams comes from two great men I had to learn from, one who served in the teams in Vietnam, and the second who worked as a contractor for State in East Africa. Hearing the few stories they could tell me sparked my interest in that kind of work and the extraordinary people who perform it.
Thanks for reading, and I hope to learn a lot being here.

I enlisted a few years ago in hopes of serving my country, but my old unit didn't get that opportunity, so I went to selection. One step down, one thousand to go.
I want to contribute as much as possible wherever I get assigned. But with America shifting focus to the East, I'm having a hard time moving on with the sense of guilt from not doing my part in GWOT. So I'm here searching for wisdom and direction.
Thank you.

The GWOT is old news figure out how to fight a real Army without getting fixed with self guided munitions, (Hint) your radio is not your friend use it sparingly for all you new recruits.
(Wisdom) someone did it many times before you joined the military so it can be done ;).

Hello All,
I just turned 29 and am a foreign-born naturalized citizen. I am currently working in a city government position in Monterey County, after getting an English degree, as well as two law degrees (JD and LLM). I have been wanting to join the Army (specifically SF) for almost my entire adult life, but my son was born during my final year in college. At the time, I was informed that the Army did not offer single parents FCP's (family care plan), and that reserves or guard was the only option. They also kept pushing me to try JAG since I had been accepted to law school. I opted instead to go to law school, but ultimately knew it would not make me happy. I ended up playing college tennis in the states, and then played college basketball during my LLM in Scotland, so it wasn't a total loss. The money I make now is great, but I do not feel fulfilled by the work, and I hate the sedentary nature of the work involved. I went down to the recruiter earlier this year and he informed me that the Army was offering FCP's and I took the ASVAB just last week. I scored in the 99th percentile with a GT score of 136 or 138 (there were a bunch of numbers that came up and these were two of them that had G and T, sorry for not being specific). I was offered the 18x and will be accepting soon, I just don't like the July ship date due to a wedding I must attend in August and my son's birthday early September, so I will be waiting for the next ship date. Reading all of these posts has been very helpful in crafting a running program, and I love reading the success stories as well. I am hoping to make it through and be a part of this remarkable brotherhood.
Thank you,

Welcome and the best of luck.

Hello everyone. I'd first like to thank everyone who contributes to the info on this site, as it helps those who come upon this site with open minds make the correct decision.
I am currently an Aeronautical Engineer in Texas, a little over a year out of college. While I am mostly happy with the job (sitting indoors with no windows for 11-14 hrs per day NOT included), I am constantly aware of my desire to serve and that the "right" time to join will never come. I "tried" to join a local NG unit in college, but my recruiter was injured and was no-contact for months. When he later contacted me to resume the process, I had already accepted my current job offer.
I am drawn towards trying out for SF because I have always volunteered for the harder tasks, as by doing so I knew I would come out the other side a more capable individual. I forced myself to finish college a year early by taking more than the full load of courses and not taking any summer or winter off, all while putting 30+ hrs/wk into my extracurricular design team. These efforts were rewarded in my job interview where I had to distinguish myself from the hundreds who had already interviewed that day for the same position. Additionally, I am interested by the wide range of skills that each team member must bring to the table. Back in high school, I spread my experiences across the whole spectrum; there was a period in time where after school I'd go to football practice, then theater, then work on robotics, and I might be home by midnight. Being a well-rounded individual has always and will continue to be important to me.
I also see trying out for the more difficult jobs to be a responsibility of those who feel they could do the profession justice. I take national security very seriously, and would deeply regret letting the teams have an inadequate supply of good members just so that I could remain in my comparably cushy job. Simply put: If not me, then who?
I am currently focusing on improving my PT, as I did the "wrong" sports and played the "wrong" positions in HS (Football... DT, Track & Field... throwing), and didn't devote enough time in college to getting better physically. Once I hit those goals, I plan on contacting B Co 3/20th to start the process, as they are the closest unit to where I grew up and where I plan on moving my civilian job back to after my attempt at the pipeline is made. Being away from family for extended periods of time is fine, but permanently leaving is something I'd like to avoid. Appreciation for being around family/friends was something that moving halfway across the country alone during COVID taught me the hard way.
Lastly, I'd like to thank all the QP's. Your conduct and actions I have seen and read about both on this forum and in many other places is what inspires young guys like me to follow in your footsteps and do the profession proud.
Now I will return to reading and listening, as I have no questions at the moment, and lots of PT to do.
Hello everyone, I am a 26 y/o joining the PA guard as a 11b. My plan is to attend a SFRE in WV or Ohio down the road. I am excited to get the process rolling and to serve with great people. Ready to learn.

Going to reintroduce myself.
Posted 6 years ago for the first time here prior to BCT. Went through basic, airborne, SFPC, and SFAS. Unfortunately, I went slightly injured to SFAS after SFPC, but tried my best at selection when I went and was truly humbled by the difficulty of SFAS and was not selected. I am currently still in the Army, but I view that moment as my lowest and most disappointing failure in my Army career.
Since then, I was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant, buckled down on my studies and fitness, and was accepted into the Active Duty Option for Green to Gold which I am currently in. I am going to take my crack at selection which is a few more years down the road, but I know I need to restart the journey early. Glad to have been mentored prior to SFAS as an E from a few guys on the forum, but looking forward to the future in hopes of being selected as an O. Thanks for providing the wealth of information in this forum.

Trying out at a Officer during SFAS and the pipeline brings whole new challenges from being enlisted. Better have Land Nav and Operations Orders mastered so you can teach them right from the start.

I joined the forum back in ~2010, after one of my NCOs told me about it. (He had found it while hunting for alternative antenna solutions prior to one of our deployments.)
I served for just under 12 years, first as infantry and then cyber warfare. I'm still tightly connected to several friends at my last unit (1st SFG), the STO community, DTRA, and across USASOC. I've found that keeping our networks active is tremendously important. My day job is on the Marine Corps Red Team as a senior operator and developer, but the past few days I've been spending most of my time trying to provide technical assistance to Afghan partners attempting to evacuate with their families.
Thanks for having me!

Still not fat. Still can't run.
Can finally hit a barn (at 1000m).

Good day gentleman,
Thank you for allowing me to be a guest on your forum. I am here to soak up knowledge and prepare for my journey down the road into special operations. I am a prior service 12B20 who did 2 deployments with 1st ID. Looking to get back in the game. Thank you.
Hello all. it's been a while since I've been here. it was a stroke that sidelined me.
If you're interested, it was an
Ischemic stoke. Anyway, I hope everyone is doing well and I'm looking forward too Christmas, and year number 70.
Later.

memory is the most difficult part. The doctors say its like having a dramatic Brain

Posted a thread to the 1st Group forum and realized I never posted an introduction here after joining. Figured I would do so now.
I am a current member of 1 SFG(A) and have been since 2007. My entire time has been spent at Lewis on an ODA/ODG. Started out as an 18C, eventually transitioned to 18F, and most recently transitioned to being a 180A.
Hoping to use this site to help build out a history/team member log for my detachment to document the detachment's lineage and provide a space for future documentation.

Hello everyone,
I'm currently writing this intro while being forward. I'm a 1LT with a scout platoon with a few more months left out here. My year group opens this fall, so when we get back I'll be dropping my SFAS packet. I'm 31 and live with my family in Colorado. I made an account on here years ago before I joined the army but lost access to my registered email and never transferred access to another email. I found out about this forum from the book Get Selected which I brought with me out here. I'm on here to gather as much knowledge as I can about the profession, make some contacts and friends, and overall learn more about SF!

Hello all,
I'm Matt, I'm an old guy (as far as SF candidates are concerned), I'm 31 y/o.
I honestly only recently started thinking about the military and just recently discovered that not all SOF missions are the same. I'm currently studying to become a paramedic and learned about 18-Delta. Since then I've been doing everything I can to prepare. In my mind, even though I'm an older guy, it fits like a glove, and the more I look into it, the more it fits. I came here hoping to ideally find a mentor, and if not, to find as much info as I can to get myself mentally and physically prepared for not only SFAS but for the career itself. I'm looking forward to getting to know you!
Thank you!
p.s. Quick thanks to Eagle5US for helping me get my account sorted!

I'm a Marine First Lieutenant stationed in 1st Marine Division. Over the next few months, I'll move back to my home state and attempt to join 20th SFG(A) as an 18D.
Thank you for giving your time to mentor the next generation. I'll learn everything I can.
G'day
I spent a few years as an analyst in an Aussie S23/5 BDE HQ producing support products, alongside USMC MRF-D when they come over.
Currently I am a small business owner and in my part time I have been developing a program that models career and unit management.
I have studied capstone doctrines including JP 3-05, but I know that learning at that level is like unearthing a pyramid using a paint brush.
I look forward to learning from professionals alongside other motivated people, as well as contributing where I can with the resources I've picked up!
Hey ya'll, my name is Alec and I am a non-prior service civilian. I just turned 32 and am discerning the best path forward to fulfilling a call to military service and my goal of doing so with Special Forces.
Current options I'm exploring are OCS then SF when my year comes up, going enlisted and applying for an age waiver for 18x, or taking an 11b Airborne Option contract and volunteering for SFAS as soon as I get the chance.
This site has already been an invaluable asset in learning more about the community and the remarkable individuals within it. I'm currently following Kevin Edgerton's 18a SFAS Prep Course for the physical component, and the corresponding SOF Mental Prep Course. I also just began reading "Get Selected" thanks to this forum.
Thank you all for your continued service on this website- I look forward to learning and applying all that I can.
Hello Everyone, We are the parents of a current Capt. attending the QCourse , he has recently navigated thru with his team the SERE portion of training . We do not know yet where he will end up eg ODA but as supportive parents we are just so proud of the community here at Ft.Bragg and the support he ,his wife and our new 5 month old grandson has received from the area.
We just wanted to reach out and say thank you to all that have served and to the quiet professionals a special thank you to your families and support group. The sacrifice made by all in your circle is incredible the requirements needed to support someone in SOF and see them succeed is immeasurable and we salute you.
God Bless and God Speed
Great news this evening our son informed us that he will be joining the 1 SFG Ft. Lewis , which was his number 1 on his wish list.

Greetings:
I am a communications officer supporting the Department of State and have always wanted to serve in the military specifically the Special Forces, but due to my career requiring frequent immediate deployments OCONUS I have not had an opportunity.
Fortunately, in the coming year I will be changing away from PCS and TDY based positions and filling a role CONUS; subsequently, I thought now would be the perfect opportunity to pursue my personal desire of enlisting.
Due to the delays caused by my civilian employment I find myself 33 years old as I embark on the most physically demanding undertaking thus far in my life. Luckily I have spent years exercising with the protective staff at my various posts and I feel confident in being able to perform at the high standards of the community I wish to join. I have also endeavored to acquire SA through forums such as this, talking with former Green Berets I happen to work alongside with, and reading books such as Get Selected.
My major concern is that I was a victim of an Anomalous Health Incident (AHI) aka Havana Syndrome. While I am medically cleared by the DOS to work and travel in their designated conflict zones, and the syndrome is not officially recognized as a TBI, I fear it will be a disqualifying issue.
I look forward to interacting and learning from each and everyone of you.

Hello.
I am a current 42A SGT who intends to become an 18E Special forces communication Sergeant. I am 21 years old and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2019 as a Human Resources Specialist.
I love to be active, run, ruck, and otherwise compete with my peers. I jump at the chance to compete in Best Warrior/NCO Competitions, PT Competitions, Timed rucks, etc.
These past three years have led me to the realization that I want more from a job than a desk and a 9 to 5. I want to do something with no guarantee of success with people who strive for excellence.
I attended SFAS in June of 2022 with the result of a gate 1 involuntary withdrawal. It was due to a personal lack of preparation. I won't hide my mistakes during my first train up. Nutrition was horrible and I didn't even consider how sleeps affected my body. On top of that, with my main weakness of pushups I tried to spend so many hours in the gym that I neglected simple calisthenics.
I intend to return in March and have since taken my training much more seriously. I now track my nutrition/macros to the gram, apply habits for healthier sleep, and now work with a Navy Seal Officer with a degree in physiology to help plan and execute my workouts based on my weaknesses and strengths.
If anyone has any specific questions about how I would've better prepared for SFAS please feel free to reach out.
There's plenty of info on this site Mr wannabe. Good luck, if you really want it, you'll get it. Depends on how hard you try...:lifter

Good Morning. I currently work on staff at a SOF HQ's and try to support the actual warfighters as much as possible. I started in the Infantry, went Special Forces, and then moved into a functional area. My four years in 3rd SFG(A) were by far the most exciting and impactful with most of that time spent in the CRF.
I'm here to stay up with the SF community and contribute whenever possible.

Hello all.
Several of my basics are noted in my profile.
YOB 1977. BASD 2002. SFQC Grad 2013. ETS TBD.
Forum items from Professional Soldiers seem to come up in conversation, so here I am in an effort to get closer to the source.
I am THAT B_Clarke. And I welcome all genuine inquiries, blunders in etiquette notwithstanding, so long as an earnest effort to engage with mutual respect is evident.
Welcome, have fun here.. I see you were 1/509th, I was also but when they were in Italy (78-80). I think they're JRTC OPFOR now or something, or in AK?? What's a "functional area" for an 18D??
Anyway, welcome.
Oh, ETA:, I have no idea what "THAT" Breyah Clarke means...

Hi Glebo, thank you for the welcome : )
Yes, 1-509 was JRTC OpFor in 2005-2008 when I served with them and still is as far as I know.
I don't understand your question about functional area - please rephrase it for me.
THAT B_Clarke refers to my origin as a fraternal brother (of sorts) and my transition (2017) to fraternal sister. I prefer to "own" my past brazenly in order to deprive it a means of owning me. As I said in my introductory post, I welcome real questions about that path and my own journey on it. I can confirm SOF is populated by live-and-let-live pragmatists who interact based on merit and who have great questions, if any, before we simply get back to business.
Brion was a friend for many years and he told me about six months ago that the Docs only gave him six months. He doesn't answer email and snail mail to his home was returned.
I was told that he may have been placed in a VA facility. Just wondering if someone has any definitive news about him.
Thanks Hummer

Hello all. I go by Package Guy. I am looking to enlist as an 18X. Aiming for 18D.
I have always wanted to serve in the military. I grew up as an Air Force brat, with my dad serving as a pilot in Air Mobility Command for 10 years active duty and 10 years in the Reserves. He was deployed for Desert Storm before I was born and in 2004 to Iraq. He never insisted that I serve but he encouraged me to get a college education before joining.
Long story short, now I am 30 years old with 3 dependents. Divorced and looking for a career change. Now might be my time to do what I have always wanted to do by serving in the military. The draw to the Green Beret community has been spurred by my desire to serve with the best trained and smartest people in the military. I am a competitive athlete too. Additionally, I am bilingual (Spanish).
I was pre-med in college and ended up getting a graduate degree. Never went to medical school. I have an extensive work history including 5 years of medical experience in patient care, clinical research, administrative support, project planning, team leadership, and volunteering. I am going into this with knowledge that the typical recruit may not have.
My now ex-wife and her family never liked the idea of me joining the military. After college I got connected with some PJs (CROs) to explore the option to enter their pipeline. It never went anywhere but it planted a seed for me.
Now I am looking at trying my hand at something new and seeing where the dice fall. My recruiter tells me I can join as an E-4 due to my background. I am going into this with puppy dog eyes but I have some wisdom and experience that will be different from the rest.
Greetings. 33, American, seeking 18X.
I desire to maximize my potential.
To this point, civilian life, right now, is limiting my potential.
I think of what I can be and that I should be doing more.
Special Forces appears to be the only logical mechanism for acquisition of the experience and skill set to actualize.
In general, I want to be surrounded by those that motivate me to be the best. This seems like the right place.
Please wish me well regarding preparation.
Thank you ahead of time for general wisdom.

Bonjour à tous;
Bien cordialement, Philippe Vigneron.

Bienvenue Philippe. Aujourd'hui, je suis reconnaissant pour Google Translate*!
Been a member for a while but inactive for a few years, figured I would reintroduce myself. I graduated last year got selected to commission as an Air guard. I'm going to keep my head down and make sure I can fly (and land) planes safely, but my 300m target is to apply my current skills and previous work in intel to special assignments.
I'm happy to talk enlistment or commissioning advice. I wouldn't have stuck around the military if it weren't for helpful peers and mentors I found along the way.
Cheers

Bonjour Philippe,
Bienvenue Patrick

Hello, back. Hope all's well.
Happy Thanksgiving.
Hello everybody.
I would go by “Peregrine” but I had some issues with registration that caused me to just make a second account. Shouldn’t matter too much considering I will be pretty quiet having never donned a uniform, let alone The Beret.
I am currently 20 yrs old out of Florida. I had always possessed some interest in the military even as a kid but never gave it serious thought until my senior year of HS, being met with the question of what do I want to do with my life? Of course like everyone else further education was the default answer, but the more I thought about it the less I could see myself pursuing some engineering, CS, or some otherwise soul sucking but secure career field. That being said knowing where I don’t want to be is not a solution to not knowing where I want to be. As that one Roosevelt quote goes: “It is not the critic who counts…”. I didn’t know much about SOF as a whole to be honest until having spent some time around a family member (who will not be named for obvious reasons) who spent a large portion of his military career in the SOF world. At first I knew nothing of SF or what their mission was, so I never really took interest in them and did more research into other units but I never really felt a drive towards those (no shade to those guys of course, nothing but respect for them). Bringing this up to that family member though, he gave me pointers towards SF and told me about the real identity that it has, the importance of its mission and its uniqueness even within the SOF community. At that moment i knew I wanted to take my shot at this.
Honestly, having read other posts here Im probably one of the least qualified guys to be pursuing the 18x pipeline. I was an average student and I never really pushed myself. I didn’t participate in team sports or clubs. Not because I wasn’t capable but I think I was disenchanted and lacked purpose. On top of that there was no way I could pursue enlistment then because of *certain political climates* within the military. That being said though, the SF community has helped me find purpose and find self discipline in a way that nothing else has, and for that I am grateful. Even if I make it all the way there just to fail, that alone is a success in my eyes.
I have just started training for the pipeline and plan on about a 6 month track (give or take) before shipping out. I was admittedly ahead of the curve from a complete average joe because of my experience riding MTB, (here in florida you have to be a damn good XC rider!) but of course nothing replaces consistency and I am by no means a PT superstar at the moment. Keeping my nose to grindstone and keeping my head sharp are my main priorities at the moment. Any advice or constructive criticisms would be appreciated. God willing, De Oppresso Liber :lifter
