Daredevil SAS man-turned-explorer Bear Grylls was being airlifted to the UK after being badly injured while on an independent expedition in Antarctica.
The 34-year-old adventurer broke his shoulder in a life-threatening fall and was said to be in ‘shock and agony’ from a serious fracture which left the bone protruding from his body.
The accident happened at 11pm British time on Friday, and Bear’s insurance company arranged for his evacuation by air ambulance for urgent medical treatment, at an estimated cost of £60,000.
Bear was injured during the making of his latest daredevil documentary, a bid to scale an unnamed mountain after travelling across the Antarctic on jet-skis, a wind-powered kite-ski and an electric-powered para-glider.
The aim of the expedition, which was not part of filming for the Discovery Channel, was to promote alternative energy and bioethanol as a source of power, as well as raising funds for the children’s charity Global Angels.
If successful, Bear and his team of four had planned to name the 9,000ft peak. But it is uncertain if the bid will now be possible, though Bear is reportedly determined to return to Antarctica.
The airlift operation itself was fraught with danger as it meant flying into hostile conditions with temperatures plummeting to -35C and a landscape of 1,000ft ice cliffs with 700 miles of high altitude plateau.

IMO, I enjoy watching for the entertainment factor and seeing some places I'll never see.
I'd rather watch Mike Rowe do a Dirty Job special with Harsey.

Survivor Man
I liked Friday nights Survivor Man. Les had his friend with him in the woods. 'Ol Bob had a very dry sense of humor and did shoot some chow.
I like Survivor Man better than Man vs Wild, less staged shots, but both let you see some great places.

+1. I think Les Stroud has a much more realistic approach than Grylis.
I particularly hate when Grylis says "this is only for a trained expert to do..." when in reality he's doing stupid crap that an expert wouldn't do in the first place.

Perhaps Bear could fashion a healing salve from eau de elephant dung and turtle blood.

This was bound to happen, I am just surprised that he survived.
The man has a serious ego problem stoked by an apparently insatiable desire to turn every survival show into an episode of "Fear Factor".
His antics, including a penchant for climbing or descending dangerous heights unnecessarily and eating disgusting iterms with little nutritional value, were bound to catch up to him.
I agree, Les is much more realistic and sounder survival advice, though he does his own share of stupid things, albeit much more infrequently than Bear.
I do feel sorry for the other people who were put in jeopardy by Gryll's stupid risks.

Used to watch him until he walked into a Mangrove Swamp for a distance, then decided to turn around. Real Expert!!!!!! Also his comment that he trained with British Special Forces was dubious.

After watching Grylls last weekend, the episode was in Siberia, he was body surfing down the moutain and for wahatever reason he swam under the ice in sub zero..... I was wondering then his stunts would catch up with him, looks I didn't have to wait long to find out.
