Big Boy's Toys
Had the opportunity to enjoy some nice weather and bust a few big caps this past weekend.
The brick and the red 12 gauge shotgun shell are provided for perspective.
Got some .50 Spotter rounds loaded into .50 BMG cases, best $20 of ammo I have ever shot.
Lots of fun. Anyone else get out this past weekend? Let's see what you were shooting.

TR,
Sir, may I ask how much that gem of a weapon set you back? I would love to be able to shoot one of those on a regular basis.
Alas I am relegated to a .40 HK USP and Rem 870 12 GA pump. I would like to get a .223 and I am looking into a Bushmaster or a Rock River.
Best Regards,
Jason

Sir:
That is a very nice weapon.
*Momentary thread hijack*
Jason:
You could have probably gotten your hands on one of those (.50 Cal) had you taken SSG Crow up on his offer. I heard they were giving away slots to SOTIC to the guys who volunteered for the ADSW. tsk-tsk-tsk.
I know why you did not go so dont go there.
* Hijack ended*

Nice rig Reaper, however while I shot this weekend I only used an old bolt action .22 to elimate about a dozen red squirrels who felt that my home was their home. I think the difference between our weekend experiences are definitely ammo cost and the amount of additional ear ringing. Can you hear me now?

My hearing is what it is after 25 years in the Combat Arms.
I did double up on the hearing protection though.
The Armalite AR-50 rifle is $2500 or so, plus optics, mount, bipod, and monopod. The Armalite and the Serbu are about the least expensive ways to get a good dedicated .50 rifle. Some are up over $10K.
The ammo is not as bad as most think. U.S. made .50 BMG demil/remil ammo is $1 to $1.50 for an assortment of rounds, including the spotter rounds I was shooting. That makes my 20 rounds about the same cost as 20 rounds of premium rifle ammo, 100 rounds of .45 Ball, 150 rounds of 5.56 Ball, or a 500 round brick of .22LR.
Below shows what an assortment of .50 rounds will do to a 1.25" mild steel plate. The two smaller marks at the top of the plate are through and through, caused by a couple of API-T rounds fired at it. You can run, but your definition of cover definitely must change. It is hard on berms as well, cutting even thick ones down quickly.
Yee hah!!

Oops, pic dropped, posted below.

Reaper,
My hearing ihas gotten to the point where I hear constant crickets which puts me at a distinct disadvantage. Remember telling all the troopies when we went out in the DMZ in Korea for nightly ambushes that when the crickets stopped chirping the fun was about to start. Now I guess anyone could creep up on me if I were to rely just on that cause I always hear the damn things. Crickets in winter are especially weird.
Did the same thing with the hearing protection but too many door breaches and associated use of flashbangs sort of negated that.
Had some experience with .50 cals made under contract for selected mission profiles . As I recall the price tag for some of these systems including the optics were well over the 5K mark and them some when you started adding additional widgits. The primary ammo was the ROLFUS .50cal, but had some other ammo also. That stuff carried a hefty price tag also so consequently we trained mostly with issue .50cal AP ammo. Sounds like you got a good deal on both the system and the ammo.

Whilst waiting for a bargain on a Leupold M1 16x or 20x, or a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x, it is wearing an old Tasco Super Sniper, which I have been unable to break, despite the company's rep, and my efforts.
The M82 Barrett is in the neighborhood of $8,000, the EDM in some variants is closer to $10,000. Raufoss ammo is $35 per round on the civilian market, when you can find it.
I thought I was the only one with the cricket infestation?
