Obama in Asia: Military deal tops Philippine agenda

Obama in Asia: Military deal tops Philippine agenda

"US President Barack Obama says that a new US-Philippine military pact will promote stability in the region.

The deal, signed in Manila hours before Mr Obama touched down, allows a bigger US military presence in the country.

Mr Obama said the deal was not intended to contain China, with whom Manila is embroiled in a bitter territorial row. ...."

Nice little roundup of what's going on over there. The short clip shows the fishermen's problems.

The map at the bottom shows the relationship between the islands in dispute and the countries involved.

Philippines to offer U.S. renewed use of Subic Bay

The Philippines said Friday it plans to give the United States Navy access to five military bases under a deal that could see U.S. forces return to their giant former facility at Subic Bay.

China is becoming a growing threat in the western Pacific so why not? Maybe we should have stayed or least left a sizeable force there.

Makes sense for the Philippines, since they are quite possibly the most vulnerable to a "Chinese Grenada" at the moment.

I wonder how long it will be before Chinese interference in the Phillipines becomes a red line that cannot be crossed.

Or on the bright side??

The region could use some "Kum ba yah" and really the troops round the growing muslim threat.

China might, I say might, like to share experiences fighting muslim extremist??

Then again, it's another shit conflict berry wants to get us into with his imaginary lines in the sand..
