OK - I'm salivating like one of my GSDs eying filet mignon. Yes, they do know the difference - not that they actually taste anything, it's gone so fast. I on the other hand, would savor every bite/sip. You'll have to provide a post-mortem so we can all experience it vicariously.

For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.

It was a great evening. I don't like those tasting notes where the writer claims to have detected hints of tobacco, vanilla and hot young pussy in the whiskey, but I will say the following:
1. I am a much bigger fan of rye than I was before. The stars of the night for me, believe it or not, were the Van Winkle Family Reserve 13 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey and the Sazerac 18 Year Old Straight Rye Whiskey. I need to go get some now. Unfortunately, the supply of the Pappy rye is even scarcer than the supply of the wheated bourbon.
2. The 15, 20 and 23 y/o Pappy were all awesome as usual, as was the William Larue Weller Bourbon and the Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year Old Bourbon Lot B. I really need to get a bottle of the last one, liked it a lot.
3. The Eagle Rare 17 Year Old Bourbon did not belong on the same table, or even in the same building, as everything else. Same with the George T. Stagg Bourbon, which is good but just not special like everything else we were tasting. Neither of these two are worth the price IMO.
4. The best part of the evening, well maybe just a good part of the evening, was the beginning when we got a detailed history of the Buffalo Trace distillery (where all of these whiskies come from). I learned for the first time that Blanton's, Col. Taylor, Pappy and many of the other premium brands are named after former owners or operators of the distillery. Call me a geek, but it was a great lesson in American history.
I'm sorry my friends here couldn't join. My bar is always open if you're in town.

Nah! At 1/3 of a shot per tasting I would seriously doubt it. Probably just simple euphoria. Perfectly understandable. And yes - I'm jealous; thanks for the run-down. I'll be keeping my eyes open for whatever I stumble across.

There are some interesting looking whiskies at the local World Market, but WA state has levied taxes of about 30% (scalable based on liter size) which makes me not buy liquor in this state anymore.
I still love me some Blanton's, Pendleton, and snake Rive Stampede, and good single malt Scotches/Irishes.

Very true about the taxes in WA state med. I can still get a pint of Jack for $16 which is plenty for my homemade BBQ sauce. Any more than that, I cross the river into OR like most ppl in this area and get a bigger quantity close to the same price. Bushmills is my #2 whiskey.

Just got back from 11 days in Kentucky...toured 8 Bourbon distilleries. The best tasting was the Whiskey Connoisseur Experience at Heaven Hill. Four 1/2 oz. tastes of their top shelf bourbons ($130 - $400 a bottle). Evan Williams 23 ($400/bottle) is AWESOME!!!!!

It's way to pricey for a BLENDED whisky.
I'll stick to SINGLE MALTS at better prices..
Currently, My goto is Balvenie 12 YO, Double Wood, a Speyside.
But I'm easy,, give me a single malt house whisky that's 12 yrs or older and I'm GTG.. With the exception of Lagavulin 16 YO. We have a Love-Hate relationship.
When I want to splurge, I try to find a bottle of Aberlour a'bunadh Cask.
