Thanks for the post, definitely worth some thought.
Sure, guys like this have to be out there, I wonder what the official US take is on him. He returns home -- I'm guessing on his US passport (fake ones are easy to spot and good fakes hard to get) -- this cats not on a watch list? (Every time I go to the airport i have to prove I'm not the "dozer in the IRA"). No one there to meet him at PDX at least for a chat? I didn't see any overt threat to the US but just because we don't like the Syrian government doesn't mean we want this stuff. Why hasn't his citizenship been pulled? ( so he can at least have to look up when he hears a droning noise.)

I would imagine he is on a watch list and probably, if he returns to the US, will be getting a nice sit-down somewhere. As for restrictions he is fighting with a US recognized terror organization, but I think will have to prove he was doing anti-American attacks, etc. It seems clear that he has converted and is fighting a Jihad, but who knows his mentality against the US.
I think the best case scenario here would be for the US to gain as much intel off him possible. He calls home regularly etc, and hes a well known fighter. He'll get 'famous' and be all over the place making connections etc. He may eventually become a problem, but who knows.

Concur, the guy seems to be a bit too easily influenced and extremist for my liking. A bit of a douche just looking for a cause and some excitement. Let's just hope he is one of our "assets" and his anti-Zionist garbage is just for effect. Doubt it, don't think he would be so public if he were, but maybe. If not one of ours, then this guy bears watching carefully if he ever makes it back to the CONUS.

Since he is a traitor now, you think he has a shot at becoming Senator or Secretary of State?

He could be considered as violating the Neutrality Act:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutrality_Act_of_1794
I remember its use being threatened against people in the 80s & 90s who were freelancing down in Central America - maybe some old 7 groupers recall hearing about those guys?

I think he's the kid I introduced to the CIA recruiter.... yeah, that's the ticket.
Actually, this part of the story tells me all I need to know. Even if he was brought up and edumacated good in Phoenix, he apparently moved south and fell in with bad company...

Power of Significance
A psychological case for wanting to be a part of something larger than himself. Easily manipulated.
Originally, I thought this was a CIA ploy. I'm sure he'll have some tangible intelligence though.

While some here
While some here are cheering at his arrest I got a little problem with the law they quoted in the story.
They didn't say they were charging him with anything he did against the US.
There have been a number of former SF folks who fought in South America, Africa in the late 70's, early 80's, and Afghanistan in the 80's (All on the good guy side) that could be charged under than law.

I wondered the same thing.
I think they can arrest him because since Al-Nusrah has admitted affiliation with Al-Qaeda. The US considers them under the umbrella of Al-Qaeda's general ideology toward the US.

This could get interesting. Isn't a grenade launcher a weapon of mass destruction and don't we have contractors using them?

sad ending...
As I read the first article I thought to myself "Wow what a great way to place a mole right in the heart of a terrorist cell - and he's not even a Farsi speaking American of middle eastern heritage - he's a plain old white boy and we have no shortage of those!!!"

but it turns out he is just a weak minded simpleton with a head injury. At least he is not out there embarrassing our nation anymore.

Grenade launchers = WMD? To who? Diane Feinstein?
