A French filmmaker producing a movie about US Special Forces? (will there be white flags involved?)

These are operations conducted to rescue hostages and/or recover sensitive materiel from terrorist control, requiring capabilities not normally found in conventional military units. The safety of the hostages and preventing destruction of the sensitive materiel are essential mission requirements.


Now all we need to know is which US "Special Forces" unit they will be depicting (MARSOC, SEALS, Rangers, or the real Special Forces)???????
I was aghast to learn that neither Chuck Norris or Sylvester Stallone were staring in the movie......

LOS ANGELES – "Special Forces," starring Diane Kruger and Djimon Hounsou, centers on a war correspondent Elsa Cassanova (Kruger) being taken hostage by the Taliban in Afghanistan. After learning she faces execution, a Special Forces unit is dispatched to bring her home.
French filmmaker Stéphane Rybojad told FOX411's Pop Tarts column he was going for an accurate depiction of a war zone while capturing the essence of the comradery among the Special Forces soldiers.
“Through war, what stands out, and it may be a cliché but it is true – is love amongst men, a sense of brotherhood beyond skin color, nationality, religion or gender,” Rybojad said. “Courage and a sense of sacrifice are always good to show in cinema, because these men and women exist in real life. This is a story of men who don’t do politics, just their job.”
Having directed his first documentary centered on the command and structure of the Special Forces in 2005, Rybojad sought to incorporate that precise detail into “Special Forces,” and even surprised himself with a change of heart along the way.
“When I was young, I wasn’t exactly a military enthusiast – on the contrary. But then I discovered an amazing universe, little known and misunderstood: interesting people who certainly like action but are men with real values, who operate in a universe which is not based on individualism but on the group,” he continued. “The main job of Special Forces isn’t of course going to rescue hostages or prisoners, but they have the best experience, the best knowledge, the best preparation to do it. They have both the skills and the means.”
Drawing inspiration from some of the soldiers he had met, Rybojad sat down to write the script three years ago with Hounsou in mind to play the lead. Before flying them to the film set in Tajikistan, a small country bordering Afghanistan, the director sent his actors off to learn some serious skills.
“They followed a week-long commando course for Marines at Lorient in Brittany… The actors felt as if they were arriving on another planet,” he said. “But soon they were all getting along. Right away they got into the spirit of the thing; they understood all the mechanisms of solidarity and teamwork. They were curious and attentive and soaked it up like sponges.”
Rybojad hopes American audiences are entertained by his action film, and also develop a greater appreciation for our nation’s Armed Services in the process.
“French and American soldiers worked together in Afghanistan for 12 years. Through this film, not only will American audiences see that they have but perhaps it will show another side of the war in this land,” he added. “The relationship the American people have to their army is very different of ours with our own army. French soldiers are greeted back home with indifference. I think that the audience will leave the theater with a true eagerness for life.”
“Special Forces” will be released in select cinemas on Friday (also is available on VOD and iTunes).

This movie actually depicts a French SF team composed of Navy(Commando Hubert??) and 1er RPIMa soldiers. I didn't download the movie, it'd be a waste of disk space, I'd rather watch "Two weeks in Hell" or "The Green Berets" for the nth time.

The French directors were maybe sick of seeing that famous French directors were constantly making movies where the hero is always US SF or CIA SAD. I mean they must be saying "hey we got ze Legion, toughest force on ze Earth according to SAS monsieur Bear Grylls. Why show US cowboys??"

Talking of foreigners most Asians and European civvies I have come across regard the US SF(SEAL,Rangers,SMU are termed as SF by them) as barbarians.Why?? because they saw it in some crap movie.

I watched the trailer, you are correct this movie has zero to do with American Special Forces.

But in the trailer they are using American weapons..... very amusing. What's even more amusing is the use of the term "Special Forces" as the title, that will get people into the theaters and then piss them off when they find out its the French "make believe Special Forces" version.

Kinda off subject but when Richard and I went through Phase I, there was a Frenchman, an author IIRC, observing the SF training program. I remember because was wearing a pair of those thick-soled jump boots that were popular with MFF personnel back in the 1970's. It seems like the French have a fascination with the way we do things...

PLOT:

They parachute in you see from 10,500 feet and then assault the hide out...They take on a taliban group..rescue the most beautiful journalist you have EVER seen......and her driver only to see him barbarically killed from behind by an evil OBL like character, only YOUNGER, fitter, and better looking.

They escape on foot..for hundreds of miles...up and above mountain ranges with 2 rather unfit/fit hostages they rescued and with 10 tons of gear...dodging the enemy with skill, stealth and big lungs....and then..one by one of the team are barbarically killed off...

And at the end...only the journalist and 2 of the special forces troopers survive..by navigating their way up and over the hindu kush with no winter gear or equipment for weeks and into romantic Afghanistan.

That's the gist...of the plot.

The actual title is Forces spéciales, the french for special forces. It was only anglicized for the international audience.
As of the use of US made fire arms like M4's and others, many unconventional warfare corps use them. I don't see how it can be surprising. For instance, Italian UW units, like COMSUBIN ( navy) and 9th regiment Col. Moschin ( Army) use them

IIRC, there's a comment on the identify unit thread "where's the FAMAS?"

The movie tanked with critics, same critic that lambasted Act of Valor. Now, while it may be a recruiting tool with infil galore, IMHOO that movie pays true homage to SEAL honor, and the never-quit-git-r-done mindset.

Any war movie will generally tank with most critics...ESP. the french...was surprised Act of Valor got hammered as bad as it did..wasn't that bad a movie but most certainly not an academy award winning movie by any stretch of the imagination....

But you had to watch this just to see Diane K.
