Good SF movies?

Though the topic was touched on briefly in The Hurt Locker thread, I just saw The Green Berets for the first time last night and it made me curious if there are any movies/TV shows that portray SF realistically or accurately (besides The Green Berets and Predator, that is). Conversely, any exceptional stinkers?

accurate portrayal of SF?

Isn't Predator the one where the guy is waving around the handheld Gatling-gun??

Since John Wayne, I don't think Hollywood has an actor that can fill the bill of a real Green Beret. I think that's why the Navy SEALS played themselves in their most recent movie.

To answer your question I do not recall a movie that accurately portrayed (or attempted to portray) a Special Forces, "Green Beret". There are some great books out there, and some are written by our guys, try those.

A little bit of advice, be careful on admitting on this board, that you watched the most "Holiest of Holies" for the first time.

We had a memeber (who is also an Administrator) admit that he hadn't even seen the movie yet. Oh the shit storm that followed, was NOT pretty .......

Best of luck to ya.

My junior 18C admitted that he hadn't seen it. We sent him home with direct orders to watch the movie that night.

The next day he admitted that he had seen 'most' of it. When we demanded to know why only 'most', he said

"My wife made me stop watching it, she said it was too violent."

...

The same guy couldn't tell us what his hobbies were. We told him to make something up, so he sounded like a man. He still couldn't. We told him to come in the next day with a hobby, or we would assign him one. Next day, he didn't have a hobby.

Now it's ventriloquism.

That's the one. I figure if anyone can kill an invisible, nuclear powered alien, it'd be some of these here QP's.

Why do you think that they don't attempt to portray it? Do filmmakers think an audience wouldn't be entertained by realism, or do they have just such a genuine, complete misunderstanding they don't realize how far off they are?

Maybe I shouldn't've admitted having never seen The Green Berets, but then we would have not gotten this gem.

Farewell to the King....not about SF per se, but the best movie on UW (In WWII, with Nick Nolte) out there.

And BTW, The Duke was a fat draft dodger.

Welp, thanks for the responses to my question, but I think that is my cue to exfil before this turns into a western style saloon fight.

The SEAL movie was a hit, so realism is ok.

Some of the recent battles that have been fought by Special Forces would be stories a film producer would kill for......

There's no one in hollywierd that can play a SF soldier in my opinion.

I seem to recall hearing that Oliver Stone was working on a movie about the beginning of OEF. I don't see how a movie about that could be made without having a strong focus on SF, particularly ODA 574. Maybe we'll get a version of the Battle of Tarin Kowt with an invisible, secret ODA calling in air from the grassy knoll.
