7075 vs 6061

Shopping for an upper receiver I noticed most are 7075. The exception being the VLTOR monolithic (VIS) which are 6061. VLTOR makes the MUR out of 7075. I suspect the reason they use the 6061 for the VIS has to do with warpage during the manufacturing process. Any downside to these uppers?

The answer

I called VLTOR, seems that they get a much stronger bond when they weld two pieces of 6061 together than they can get with 7075. Also discovered why 7075 is the preferred material for receivers, it has twice the tensile strength of 6061 although it is probably a moot point because of the low stresses on the upper.

The 7075 is much stronger.

Trivia questions. No looking it up.

1. Where did 7075 come from?

2. What was its first real use?

Bill and Peregrino, no fair answering.

MVP,

I am back home and if you are looking at something from Vltor let me know. I can hook a brother up for a good price. I have built several AR's for people here locally using the MUR and the VIS and no one has ever complained.

I use the MUR's for my SBR builds.
