reporting in...
Medical Platoon Leader, Service Company, Arlington Heights, '82-'86
Also, attached to Forward Medical Operations Teams at 2/12 in Tulsa and 3/12 Hamilton Field CA for various exercises.
Jack, do you still have the dumbbell in your office??
Last time I remember jumping Cairn DZ was 28 SEP 85 when COL Fred Grover, Group Surgeon (RIP) jumped twice, landed on that hillside with one foot high and had a really spectacular fracture...We air-evaced him to Northwest Community Hospital in the jump aircraft....He never jumped again and I never saw him again either...I think he finished his career at the VA Hospital in Big Spring TX...not sure though.
Anyone heard from Gerry S the Svc Co Cdr then 3/12 Cdr? We need to find him.

Now Doc, I have had a lot of dumbbells in front of my desk with their heels locked or are you talking about the athletic training apparatus?
Good to hear from you.

I joined the 12th back in 1978. They had a unit in Lubbock, TX that I was slotted to go to as an 11F. They even had a slot for me to attend the O&I school, but I got medical boarded for a back injury while on active duty. This Army medical officer asked me a couple questions as part of the review after looking at the x-rays and reading the physician's report. She wanted to know if I was married and I said yes. She wanted to know if I wanted to have kids and I said yes. She then poked me in the waist just below the belt line and said "then don't jump out of any more airplanes. One hard landing and you'll be dead from there down.". I gotta tell you - that got my attention. Anyway, I was released from the unit after making a couple drills.

Early years of 12th Group?
Saw my first A Team in the Oklahoma State University Homecoming Parade in the Fall of 1964...Team walked in line...don't remember if they had weapons or not, but they had a big black Bouvier Des Flanders dog carrying his own ruck (we would have called it a backpack back then...).
I later lived in an apartment on Connell in Stillwater next door to the dog and the owner, an SF reservist.
My question to all of you SF historians out there: Was that Team a 12th Group team or was it the 12th at that time. What unit preceeded the 12th? I have the 2/12 Last Day coffee cup...dates are 1959-1994.
Does anyone remember the dog or the owner???

I can't answer your question; however, here in the Seattle area, I joined the SF Reserve in June '61 and it was a numbered unit that started with a (3.) I don't think it was associated with a Group.
Shortly afterwards the unit was turned into Group HQs 17th SFGA. After a few years the 17th SFGA was disbanded. We became members of the 12th SFGA. Of course now, all in this area belong to the 19th SFGA (NG)
The 17th SFGA covered most of the West coast. The HQ's for the 12th was on the East coast. My units both in the 17th and the 12th were stationed at Ft. Lawton and NAS Seattle.

HQ 12th SFG (A)
I was active duty with Headquarters 12th SFG (A) 1987 - 1990 as the S-1. PCS's to Fort Benning and the 12th was deactivated! In 2008 met the retired COL from G-1 (Pentagon) who issued the orders to deactivate. He said they kick themselves every day for doing that because the 11th and 12th are needed in todays war.
