Hi,

There are fews:

De Oppresso Liber. (US SF) (Ok I'm not a cock...., that's why I didnt put it first :D )
Facta non Verba. "Deeds, not words" (JTF-2, Canadian SOF)
Osons. (or "we dare") (former Canadian Airborne Regiment)
On Rit avec le Diable. "We laugh with the devil" (French, 6RPIMa)

First in Last out.
You don't have to like it, you just have to do it. (origin: a book  ...)

The Finnish Laskuvarjojääkärikoulu/Airborne Jaeger School: "Excelsior"
With my non-existent Latin skills I would translate this as "Outdo yourself" or "Aim for excellence". Hope this makes some sense, my own unit does not seem to have a motto, just some old stories about fighting for Bulgarian Independence from the Osman Empire. :)

Fortune Favors the Bold - Recon CCN
"Fortune Favors the Bold" and variants are also the motto of a number of other military units, as well as numerous family coats of arms.
Audaces Fortuna Juvat - Portuguese Comandos, who also use the less official motto "Os Comandos nâo morrem, reagrupam se no inferno" ("Commandos never die, they just go to hell to regroup").
Fortes Fortuna Juvat - Jydske Dragonregiment (Jutland Dragoons). This is actually closer to "Fortune favors the strong" and sounds much nicer in Latin than in Danish: "Lykken hjælper den stærke" or "Lykken står den kække bi."
Fortes Fortuna Juvat - Third Marine Regiment, US Marine Corps.
Fortes Fortuna Juvat - 334th Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division, US Army. From 1946 to 1952, this was the 334th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

About the phrase, "Ne Conjuge Nobiscum" and specifically the word "conjuge",
There is no "j" in Latin so the word is an anglo saxon bastardization of a Latin word.
The correct spelling should have an "i" in it and is pronounced "con-you-gay".
The meaning is "joined together". You guys can take it from here.

You shouldn't be too impressed. It is easily Google-able. It is derived from the first part of Proverbs 24:6, "For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety" and was Mossad's motto until changed to Proverbs 11:14, "Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety."

"De Oppresso Liber" is the U.S. Special Forces motto, as you can see on the crest at the top of the page. Whether it was also picked up by any Aussies, I don't know. SASR's motto is the same as the SAS - "Who Dares, Wins" - though I suppose there are other mottoes out there as well. The Royal Australian Regiment's motto is "Duty First".

2. From oppression, Freedom
Just to be pedantic, I would note that actually, "De Oppresso Liber" is not proper Latin. Cicero would certainly look at you funny if you said it to him. It is derived from Medieval Latin usages, but is not gramatically Latin.
De is a preposition meaning "from" or "down from" and its object takes the ablative case. Another preposition, ex, also means "from" or "out of" and might be closer to the meaning we are looking for. The "-ō" after an ablative preposition indicates a second declension noun, which would make the nominative form oppressum (neut.) or oppressus (masc.). These would be participle forms of the verb opprimere, and mean "oppressed". But that makes de oppresso mean "from the oppressed" not "from oppression".
See, for example, the Latin Vulgate versions of Jeremiah 22:3: ... et liberate vi oppressum de manu calumniatoris... ("...and deliver him that is oppressed out of the hand of the oppressor...") and II Peter 2:7: ...Loth, oppressum a nefandorum iniuria conversatione... ("...Lot, oppressed by the injustice and lewd conversation of the wicked...").
Liber by itself is an adjective meaning "free". Freedom is libertas. The verb "to free" is libero, but would have different endings depending on context; also, it wouldn't take de but ab, ex or no preposition.
The line from the Book of Jeremiah above - "and deliver him that is oppressed out of the hand of the oppressor" - might be a good basis for a motto, but the Vulgate isn't good Classical Latin either.
There's always semper ubi sub ubi - "always wear underwear." :D

A-L,
I wasn't going to go there, but you are 100% correct. I had to study latin in grammar school and middle school, and relied on the fact that vulgate Medieval Latin is more commonplace to the masses because of the influence of the Catholic Church than is the purer Classic Latin. I defer to your synopsis, but still stand by the translations offered - in spirit, if not literally.

Actually, my hope was someone would show that the phrasing came from soldier's Latin, which like soldier's English, is a bit rougher and looser with the grammar than the classical language.
Soldier's Latin is best preserved in Romanian, though modern Romanian has lots of Slavic and Hungarian influences and went through a classical revival period which had the unintended effect of copying some French usages (which of all the major Romance languages is actually furthest from Latin).
x SF med
06-06-2006, 07:42
In vulgate soldier's Latin - case, gender and gerund were much more loosely used - mainly due to the fact that there were so many different languages spoken by the Roman soldiers, many of whom were conquered peoples, and trying to gain citizenship. The same - as you so succintly noted is true in soldier's English, or in any army - to ease communication differences.

Dispite the fact that none of these are SOF Mottos, you will surely get some argument from the Infantry units in the Berlin Brigade as to whom was the most forward deployed unit. They were not only forward deployed by they had the Group Soviet Forces Germany surrounded from the inside. You will also get arguments from the Infantry units that were depoyed along the edge of the DMZ forward of Liberty Bell for the periods that they picked up the mission. I will grant that they were the most continuously forward deployed unit in the ROK, however.

That used to be a t-shirt with a very similar picture to LKSteve's avatar.... coincidence? Probably not.

Also a license plate....which ended "Be unconventional, Do it Different"
I believe the exact quote was:
Special Forces
Penetrates deeper, Stays longer, and carries a heavier load.
Be Unconventional, Do it different.

Vis a vis "Facta non verba"...
I believe the correct phrasing of the above quote is Acta Non Verba. It is the motto of the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. It translates literally as "Deeds not words."

My favorite line that I heard all too often, though it's not a motto, is from when I was in 20th Group in 98-99 and we went to Camp Santiago down in Puerto Rico. Someone from one of the S shops was always showing up saying:
"Hi I'm from Battalion. I'm here to help."

Now that brings back memories. When I was a cadet at the USMMA we were told that the commandant , who was a vice admiral at the time, stuck his ship not once but twice on the same sand bar in Long Island Sound. So much for "Deeds not Words" when it came to his discussion of navigations skills.:D As I recall, whenever we ran into him, we muttered amoungst ourselves "Weeds not Words"!

From a foreign SOF battalion:
"Soldado advertido no muere en guerra"
Unofficial second verse:
"O si muere, es por marica."
Team mottos I've heard and liked:
"Somos pocos pero locos."
"Pursue, pressure, punish"
7th Marines:
"Prepare to March!"
Our SFQC class motto was "We'll come back with the shield, or on it." It's a Viking reference. Viking dead were carried home on their shields. This was also a time when only SF qualified troops wore the beret flash. Also a time when only SF, Ranger and 82d wore berets.
SMDCMD was one of my favorites. Stood for "Suck Me Dry and Call Me Dusty".
EPABF was one teams that called it out all the time, like during PT. Meant "edited to remove profanity" Can we curse on here? No filters?
"No Pain, No Gain" is a classic.
So is "That which does not kill me makes me stronger."
I was on a Mountain Team, ODA-143, 1st Gp, and our motto was "Berg Heil" whenever we were in the mnts, which was allot. Our Tm Sgt and Intel Sgt had spent allot of time at Bad Tolz and brought that to the team.
Same team, we also used to tell/yell to students, when on Rainier, Icicle Creek, or wherever, "Come on Flatlanders!" I got it from a Coors commercial that ran on the TV allot at that time, '84-'85.
"With your shield, or on it" was a Spartan mother's/wife's "farewell" to her husband/son as he left for battle. They predate the Viking age by a little bit. ;)

Can't argue with that, Razor was there.

COL Jack- it wouldn't happen to have been the Plum Point Bar that the VAD grounded on was it? Since it shifts a bunch depending on currents (New London Bar does the same) You really have to watch the channel markers.

So then, IS that a quote from a well-known book? I've never read said book...the story was actually told to me by a 20th Group guy.

Just found this thread and had a long lengthy laugh at some old memories...here's one I always liked from a recon element:
Forced In, Left Out
In the day, Morse Code (AIMC) students were the most physically prepared for Phase I, due in part of the Cadre's PT styles. Cadre nicknames were, The Lung, Gazelle, Ironman, etc.
One day, 1SG Bachelor ran us to one of the many Old Ft. Bragg Cemeteries. We began an endless string of flutter kicks. After reaching one..., two..., three... 199. One..., two..., three... 200. We hit the upper teens. 216, 217, 218, etc.
The CO got up from the back row, walked around, knelt beside the 1SG and punched him on the chest yelling, "WAKE UP!"
Class motto, "You can't smoke us, we'll quit first".
