Halfway down the trail to hell
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.

Marching past, straight through to hell,
The infantry are seen, '
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marine,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Flddlers' Green.

Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene,
No trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen,
And so rides back to drink agaln
With friends at Fiddlers' Green.

And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge or fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddlers' Green.

Everyone in the Army has an image of what a Sergeants Major is. Some feel that the Sergeants Major (SGM) should be very approachable, and friendly. I believe that a SGM should be the meanest man in the Battalion. The most competent individual the unit has to offer. When he comes towards you, you know fear because if anything is wrong, he will find it, and you will pay the price because he does not stand for anything that is not within regulation. He is the ultimate soldier, all knowing, all seeing, and a professional to the end. SGM Plumley was this kind of SGM. His men said of him, "God may look like SGM Plumley, but he isn't nearly as tough on sins, small or large." SGM Rodger Moore 3 May 2004

Of course, some of those warrior may be scared s#$tless with the CSM joining them.

RIP CSM, you set the standards for the rest of us to follow.

There are only 324 known recipients of the Combat Infantrymans Badge (3rd award). In addition, the CSM made 5 combat jumps during his service in WWII and Korea.

I watched "We Were Soldiers" yesterday in his honor.

I read the book "We were soldiers once and young" and also saw the movie. I wonder if Sam Elliot actually met Basil Plumley.

CSM Plumley was definately an Old Army kind of guy.

Rest in Peace CSM Plumley and may your service record be an example to all who will follow.

There are a few out there in Hollywood who aren't a**holes.

Sam Elliott Pays His Respects to True Hero Behind 'We Were Soldiers'

In 2002 actor Sam Elliot played Sgt. Major Basil Plumley in the brutal and affecting Vietnam War film "We Were Soldiers." Earlier this week, Elliott paid his respects to Sgt. Major Plumley who passed away at the age of 92.

Based on the best-selling book by correspondent Joe Galloway and Lt. General Hal Moore. "We Were Soldiers Once … and Young" told the courageous story of the Ia Drang Valley fight in 1965; the first major battle between regular U.S. Army troops and North Vietnamese regulars in which more than 300 American soldiers lost their lives.

Outnumbered almost two to one; the specter of another bloody route like the original 7th Cavalry suffered at the Little Bighorn in 1876 was certainly on these modern cavalry trooper’s minds. Two days later after some of the most intense fighting of the war the 7th Air Cavalry accounted for more than 2,000 enemy dead and wounded.

Like the top enlisted man he was, Sgt. Major Plumley was always in the thickest of the fighting.

Elliot gave an incredible and gritty performance that proved to be one of the highlights of the film. According to the Columbus Star Ledger, during filming the revered western actor and Plumley developed a deep, almost father-son friendship that carried through until the Sgt. Major’s death last week.

Elliot would often steal into town unannounced to visit him and his family. On Oct. 16, Elliot was proud to quietly show up in Fort Benning, Ga. where he accompanied Plumley’s family during the funeral services.

Correspondent Galloway, the only civilian to win a Bronze Star in Vietnam for his actions during the Ia Drang battle said of Plumley, “He was the very essence of a command sergeant major. They stand at the right hand of God and sometimes they speak with more authority than God.”

That’s just the way that Elliot portrayed the Sgt. Major, too.
I worked with Elliot on John Milius’ "Rough Riders" back in 1997. I can tell you he loves American history and real American heroes. His close friendship with Sgt. Major Plumley reflects those kinds of traditional values.

“I’ve played many historic figures, but Sergeant Plumley wasn’t just a great man. He was there....”

“That’s the difference," he says. "I pretend to be, but Sergeant Plumley was real. He lived it.”

I cant stand a poser any more than the next guy, but it says Siddall researched Plumley for a decade, and spoke to him several times, at least by Skype, but waited years after he died to come out and accuse him.

IMO, if you don't have the balls to accuse a man to his face you don't get to open your trap.

Pretty clear the Washington Post has changed their colors since Jeff Be z os bought the paper.....unfortunately. It has become just another mouth piece, tool, weapon for it's owner's agenda.

What bothers me is the followingSiddall says he just wants the record about Plumley to be corrected. "I just want the correct information out there because there are so many people that are really heroes, and it is so frustrating when they give the hero status to someone who was anything but," he said.Correcting the historical record is one thing, denying the truth of CSM Plumley's actions during the Battle of Ia Drang Valley is something else.

Yea and the Army has never fucked up records before.

As a civilian who is here to learn from the Quiet Professionals, and having browsed the "Hall of Shame" section, I understand the controversy over CSM Plumley and CPO Kyle thusly:

Somewhere along the way, someone didn't keep the paperwork straight.
CSM Plumley and CPO Kyle are our honored dead, and are not here to defend themselves.
Neither CSM Plumley nor CPO Kyle used their awards or positions to take advantage of others.
CSM Plumley and CPO Kyle are genuine American heroes.

The last two items are the reason why the members here and at "This Ain't Hell" are not giving CSM Plumley and CPO Kyle the same scrutiny as the liars and scumbags in the "Hall of Shame."

Did I miss anything?

Brian Siddall is not a fraud hunter, that said his "expertise" in dealing with the military records system lacks credibility and should be questioned.

CSM Plumley and CPO Kyle are genuine American heroes as are anyone/everyone that put on that uniform and wrote a blank check to the American people for up to and including their life.
