H&K Mk23

I'm new to the forum, and am curious as the real "SPILL" on the Mk23 and it's components, the KAC OHG suppressor and the Insight LAM? I happen to own the Mk23 with the KAC suppressor and the LAM. I was hoping to hear from the men of the ODA's what their opinions are ? and if you could carry one sidearm of your choice what would it be?

A crew served handgun.

A horse designed by a committee which turned it into a camel.

A answer in search of a problem.

A system for wannabes.

Far too big and heavy for its purpose.

Possibly a decent grappling hook or boat anchor. Otherwise, an arms room/safe queen.

Thank you for that vivid insight! Allthough I own the Mk23 and it's componets, the term "crew served handgun" was alway's what I was looking for! I will admit to likeing it for it's posterity, but quickly relized it was a bit too much to be taken seriously by the guy's of the Teams. It is spooky accurate, but so is the M9 if you take it seriously.

I seem to remember the ridiculous claims made when the MK23 was introduced to the effect of it being used to replace shoulder-fired weapons such as M4's and the like

I believe it was designed as a "ultimate" or "do-everything" pistol, which is a unrealistic concept, particularly for a sidearm. I don't know of any civilians who use one for self-defense (might be ok for home defense, where size isn't an issue) and the people who do have them are using them as range/safe queens. It can be difficult to find quality holsters that fit the MK23.

Since I do own the Mk23 and the KAC OHG suppressor, I feel I have to defend it somewhat! First, I don't believe H&k or USSOCOM ever designated this pistol as a "DO IT ALL" weapon, nor a primary over the M4, SMG, LMG, or any other primary weapon. Like many weapons, AKA the MK11 and MK12, are just dumped in the laps of the end users without explanation of how, what, why, when and where the weapon is to be employed. Many of the snipers that recieved the Mk12 SPR were simply befuttled at how pathetic the groupings were when first introduced to the teams. Mostly the defiant tone of the end users was because of the lack of the 77 grain Sierra Match that the SPR was designed for! After the teams had a crack with the proper ammo, they were suddenly dusting them off and packing them across the pond down range. The Mk23 was seemingly much of the same, but never recieved it's due appreciation. Of course I dont have to hump the "BRICK" down range and carry it for day's on end.....................so who am I to complain?

Holsters for the Mk23 are as plentifull as any other sidearm, except of course the CCW market............................who would carry such a gun for CCW? Safariland carried the 6004, and most of the cordura nylon models are availbable for the Mk23. Blackhawk, Eagle SAS, SOE Gear, London Bridge Trading Co, etc, etc, etc,

IIRC MK23's were purchased by the Navy SEALS.

As far as I know Special Forces does not own or use the MK23.
