I was thinking the same thing, there's a lot of holes in the story with this. Just what is it capable of destroying ? Would it be cost-effective ? For that matter, would it make sense to use a transport aircraft exclusively for this purpose alone, assuming the modifications done to it are permanent ? If it were mounted on a faster aircraft and slaved to some sort of advanced radar that could detect missles, I would say it could be used for missle interception. I think we'll first see lasers of this type being used on the ground for anti-missle or AA defense before they'll be used as a weapon system on an aircraft. For that matter, I don't think a laser would be an appropriate weapon for the current adversaries we're encountering in the world because they aren't using things like tanks, aircraft and guided missles, nor do they have anything that we would call high-value strategic targets in the orthodox military sense. Of course, anybody is free to correct me if they feel anything I've said is in error.
