American Charged With Being Paid Iraqi Intel Agent

NEW YORK — The government is accusing a one-time journalist and Congressional aide of secretly becoming a paid Iraqi intelligence agent before trying to influence her distant cousin -- the White House chief of staff -- on U.S. policy.
Charges brought Thursday by federal prosecutors in Manhattan against 41-year-old Susan Lindauer hinted at Hollywood-style espionage with packages left in what the prosecutor's office described as prearranged "dead drop" operations in Baltimore.

But the defendant told WBAL-TV outside the Baltimore FBI office that prosecutors were mistaken in charging her with conspiring to act as an unregistered agent of the Iraqi Intelligence Service and with engaging in prohibited financial transactions with the Iraqi government.
"I'm an anti-war activist and I'm innocent," she said after her arrest in her hometown of Takoma Park, Md. "I did more to stop terrorism in this country than anybody else. I have done good things for this country. I worked to get weapons inspectors back to Iraq when everyone else said it was impossible."

I will say: It is to wage war, by sea, land, and air with all our might and all our strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, What is our aim? I answer in one word: Victory Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. Winston Churchill

A few details to keep in mind when you read various stories about this woman:

1. She was not charged with being a spy or an intelligence agent. She was charged with, among other things, being an unregistered foreign agent (which covers people like lobbyists, not spies) and taking undeclared payments from a state sponsor of terrorism.

2. Between 1993 and 2002, she worked for four different congressmen and a senator (Peter DeFazio, Ron Wyden, Carol Moseley-Braun and Zoe Lofgren), all of whom are Democrats.

3. Her cousin, Andrew Card, is reportedly the one who turned her in when she came to him touting of her Iraqi contacts.

3. Interspersed with her work on the Hill, she was a journalist for, among others, US News and World Report and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (mottoes: "Intelligent as a Post" and "I'm intelligencer than you!").

4. In recent years, she has been involved in certain leftist anti-war groups. The Cuban Communist organ Granma identified her in early 2003 as a co-founder of an anti-war group called "Citizens for Public Integrity".

5. Her co-defendants were also not charged with espionage (though given who they are, charges could follow), but they were charged with making false statements to Federal invesigators.
