COL T. E. Lawrence (Of Arabia)

I just wanted to mention here to those whom may have never seen/watched the movie "Lawrence of Arabia, circa 1962, that it is an excellent movie and well worth your time to watch. I obtained the DVD through "Netflick;" however, I'm sure there are other ways to obtain it.

It stars Peter O'Toole as Lawrence and has many other great stars from the past, such as Alec Guiness and Anthony Quinn as co-stars.

It tells the true life story of warrior-poet T. E. Lawrence, who helped unite warring Arab Tribes so they could strike back against the Turks in WW I.

As you can no doubt tell by my signature line, I'm a fan of T. E. Lawrence.

I urge anyone who hasn't seen this movie, to do so. Or those like me who had seen it a long time ago to watch it once again to remember it's GW lessons again.

The scenery and acting in this flick as well as the music score is outstanding!!

"It is written, Lawrence." (Omar Sharif)
"Nothing is written." (O'Toole)

My favorite movie of all time!

I'm still wading my way through "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom." Excellent book, but very dense with information. I would never have guessed that the movie would be very good, but I'll definitely try to find it. Thank you for the suggestion sir.

The book used to be on the recommended reading list for SF Troops. I wonder if it is still there.

I considered placing the tread on the movie here, but since it wasn't a book I didn't do it.

Wide Screen Only

If a person has never seen the movie they must watch it in the Wide Screen "Letter Box" format.

A must see movie.

Outstanding flick! Currently reading a biography called A Prince of Our Disorder: The Life of T.E. Lawrence-- by John E. Mack. I'm about half through it and so far it's really solid.

Lawrence of Arabia

I bought the remastered VHS years ago for my fathers Christmas present. A great movie.

When they filmed the movie in 1962, didn't they come across the train the actual Lawrence blew up??

TE Lawrence

Hello All,

I am a retired Middle East and SubSaharan FAO and military historian. My last tour was 30 months in Zaire (1993-1994) and Rwanda (1994-1996) as the US Defense Attache. In that last assignment I had 2 great ODAs from 3rd Group helping me set up the demining program. Now I am the CALL military analyst at the JRTC where I have been for the past 5 years.

On Lawrence, I too am a fan, albeit one with caveats. 7 Pillars is a long but good read; it is also semi-fictional. For a shorter, more relevant, and accurate read look at Lawrence's paper, Evolution of a Revolt at http://www-cgsc.army.mil/carl/resour...e/lawrence.asp

Lawrence was a complex man, one who did not fit in with the British Army of WWI and who ultimately failed in his bid to fully fit in with the Arabs. He does however have very insightful things to say about the mechanics of the revolt. I suggest you pretend that you are reading it as an Iraqi insurgent.

Best all,
