The French soldier that was killed was a 28-year old corporal from the 1er Régiment Parachutiste d'Infanterie de Marine (1er RPIMa), the French analog of the SAS (and a descendant of the French SAS of World War 2). Their vehicle was struck by a command-detonated VBIED during a patrol. Another French commando, an NCO, was seriously wounded.
