After 18E?

Though mostly I focus on getting ready for BCT, my eventual goal is to become an 18e.

That said, I have a general question for those of you who were 18e's, as well as those of you who are 18e's now.

What did/will you do after? If you went/plan to go into the civilian world, what types of jobs were/will be available to you with the Communications training you received? Or did you get a degree while you were in (or before) in something else and go that route?

Obviously this isn't something I will have to worry about for quite awhile. I am just curious.

Its late right now, so I'm going to be nice.

Worry about the 25m target.

Hopefully this will end this current thread.

Unless you can get to Frequency Managers course your 18E will get you a whole lot of nothing. I got out in 2004 and I became a Phoenix cop. What helped me was my weapons experience to include SOTIC, tactics, and civies think you are a real bad-ass if you were SF.

Its not so much your MOS that gives you opportunities on the outside, its your experience (schools, hands-on) that writes your resume.

As an 18E, sure you have the Freq Manager Course, which is a big help for an Echo if you stay in that field. But SOTIC, SFARTAETC, RANGER, HALO, SCUBA, OPB, & OIFs 1-20 (don't laugh... it'll happen). Plus Blackwater, Gryphon Group, blah-blah-blah-blah-blah. With any of these you could contract (the norm... especially for our NG SF brothers), start your own business, or just work at Wal-Mart and be a shopping cart nazi. Different strokes for different folks.

As long as you have earned the trust and respect of the guys to your 3 and 9 you can do whatever you want and be OK in my book.

Dude,
You should join NG SF. There's a unit in California, Colorado, and Utah. I know guys from AZ who commute to California (Los Alamitos) and to Colorado.

The State of California has a piece of Commo gear that would make you go HMMMM! It was deployed during Katrina to facilitate Commo between the different agencies operating within the AO.

Take care.

And I think it is safe to say that people in the military also concur with that assessment!

I concur with Frost18e on both points, bein an 18E (in and of itself alone), qualifies you to be a civilian/former 18E. It just so happens that me and him now wear blue instead of camo. (I'm a fireman).

I also think the california rig looks like a rat rig on a different kind of truck...maybe there's new stuff in there....maybe not.

Be safe

What the F@*#

It is my belief...Whoever knows the most, eats the most. With the level of technology that is available today, especially in SF or SF support; take advantage of every piece of information that is available to you. There are companies out there that are looking for people with knowledge of their products and their use in the field. You can be a trainer for those products or future products, help in development and research, engineer new products, go for it. The great part is, with SF..you can be a gunslinger too if you so wish.

My .02 worth

Sorry, Max I gotta drop my 02 cents

After 18E or even while you are still an 18E you come work with me as one of DoD's Finest Communicators! I still have 3X 18E slots open. Also I still need a 25B E-7and a 25W E-7. I am hoping to get a few more GS slots too.

You're a long ways off from being an 18E. Listen to Max TAB. Besides you have to get selected to attend the training first anyways. Don't let your thinking process get too far ahead. You will have plenty of time to assess your options if and when you make it. Your road is a long and fast learning enviroment. Keep that in mind before you start wandering mentally...

Best of luck in your future endeavors,

Well, you could become a HAM. Now that he FCC dropped the code requirement, getting a Gereral ticket should be a breeze for any 18e.
