Looks like C-Rats and LRRPs, so I am going to say it is before 1985.

TR, Doesn't look like any "C" Rats I ate or LRRPS. Nice can of Ham and MOFO's would taste great right about now.

Is that not a B-Unit can on the ground by his left boot, along with the hot sauce?

No one is going to guess?

I have always admired TR's attention to detail. He'd be a good lawyer.

You guys wearing uniforms like this today?

I'm not an expert on LRRPs but IIRC there was two different colors on the main meal foil pack. The post VN meals came in a brown plastic bag but for a while the foil pack was brown, in later years they became an OD green. Also, I think the brown bags had a card board piece on the bottom of the meal bag. Did the green ones have that piece. The bag in the picture is missing that bottom piece.

LRRPs and Cs went out and a new day dawned with the MRE. Never was too hot on MREs.

I had some of the cold weather rations in the early 90s. They were pretty good. Basicly a LRRP main meal with a bunch of extra power bars, candy, hot drink mix and soup stuff.

Ray-ban G-15 sunglasses, C-rat can, Long range rations, very worn jungle boots, possible green wool socks, sunglasses placed neatly on leg no sunglass case or string holder. He looks as if he's not sporting any socks. He's been in the field maybe 3-4 days (beard and clothes tell this story), he's not a newbie, he's been in the field before.

He could be an Eagle Scout or a soldier. I'm guessing soldier by the mere fact he tucks in his shoe strings back into his boots.

I'd say 60's-70's.

Did they have hot sause in the old Vietnam era B-Unit accessory packs? I didn't think the accessory packs has hot sauce in them, or at least the ones I have seen didn't have it. I have one that's from a 1968 meal, and it does not have the hot sauce. They discontinued the cigarettes around 1972, so maybe tabasco was put in its place? I'm guessing mid 70's. 1976?

OK guys;
I admit I sent the picture to RL. A while back there was a bit of discussion about non-standard uniforms, etc that SF wore. In the late 70s we started to spend more time in desert operations. Teams in the field were starting to get real good at going to ground and keeping out of sight.

By 1977 most teams had taken the old poplin shirt, khakis and just about anything else that was about that color and started wearing them in the field. The color was good during the bright part of the day. Dusky hours and night time we slipped on a well faded pair of cammies. The commanders didn't seem to get all that upset about the odd cloths.

At the time the picture was taken in 1979 we had four teams wandering around in somewhat the same dress/uniform on Fort Irwin. This was before the NTC.

Long about 1982/83 the desert cammies were spot issued in 5th Group and turned back in after an operation. Round about that time COs and SGMs started getting real touchy about uniformity. When you stepped off that chopper back into the launch site you had better yank that watch cap off your head and stick the PC on. Can't have the wrong hat on when you're going to debriefing.

Name tags and US Army came and went like the seasons. Take um off, put um on, take um, only in the field, never anywhere, put it all back on.

Oh, Lord, just send me to the field. Out of site and out of mind.

The C-Rats never had hot sauce, and that is a full sized bottle, regardless.

Obviously, an experienced field soldier.
