Gerber Harsey Hunter Operation Iraqi Freedom
Any thoughts from the experts?
Has a good name to it :-) But isnt cheap... $250.00
Im after a decent knife that will last quite sometime, doesnt need sharpening every 5 minutes and is well weighted. Id prefer a folder for personal reasons, but can't get a decent quality one over here...

Unless I searched for the wrong thing, I found the knife you describe for under $55.00 at shoplite.com and theknifeconnection.com. Is this the one you are talking about?

Still, that is $168 US vs. buying one from one of the US dealers for $55 and getting it shipped to you.

I better check on that price for you.
Gerber Legendary Blades did the "Freedom" thing on that knife and I've never had one here in the shop to look at.

OK, Quick phone call to the guy in charge of military/tactical sales at Gerber and he's not home.
I found the Gerber/Harsey Iraqi Freedom Knife listed MSRP of :
72.96 dollars US
and on sale for 52.50 dollars US at www.dantesknife.com
Also know that except colors and marking, this is the exact same knife as the model called the Gerber Harsey Hunter. Please check the price on that model.
Edited to add: I did a quick and far from complete search by entering "harsey hunter' and saw prices on this knife from MSRP of 65 dollars US to:
42.25 dollars US
42.95 dollars US
50.99 dollars US
39.95 dollars US

Gerber Firestorm
I've long been a fan of spyderco, benchmade and emerson knives (among others) and used/abused them all fairly hard on board ships and in ship yards as a merchant seaman. For cutting through 4 inch three strand mooring lines, towing hawsers and the myriad other things that need slicing on board ships, they all worked well. Inevitably though, in spite of loving care, the blades would chip and break. Why must we hurt that which we love? Ah, but such is the nature of working in a steel world.
I recently purchased a Gerber Firestorm serrated folder on impulse (my most recent spyderco was showing its age) and so far I'm pretty well satisfied. It's a bit larger and heavier than my spydercos with a thick, solid blade and tanto tip. As with pretty much all Gerber products, this one came shaving sharp. The handle is large enough to use while wearing work gloves and the design includes a finger guard for added safety. The best part though, is that I paid about $40 USD for it at the PX. For once, I really felt that I got a quality knife that didn't break my bank. Oh, yeah, and it's made in Taiwan.
I no longer work on ships, but feel that this knife would have served me well at sea. It certainly works well in the woods. . . worth IMHO a look.
