Good man.
No SF background, which is the largest part of USASOC. Steep learning curve.

Also in recent changes, COL(P) Charles Cleveland is heading to South Florida to take command of SOCSOUTH. Cleveland commanded 10th Group in the invasion of Iraq. He is going to SOCSOUTH from USASOC, where he was chief of staff.
USASOC also has a new DCG in BG Mark Phelan, so CG, DCG and COS all have changed in about a one-month period.

Charlie Cleveland is a good guy. I'm glad to see the (P) on that COL. I'm also glad to see him going back to his roots (he started out in 7th and has/had a really good background in LATAM). Maybe he can do something to re-energize what has - once again - become a "forgotten" theater. Maybe help figure out how to deal with the Chavez/Castro connection we were discussing here a while ago. The same Defenselink release that noted BG Phelan going to USASOC indicated that BG James Schwitters was going from CG of the Coalition Military Assistance Training Team in Iraq, where he was in charge of training the new Iraqi Army, to CG of Fort Jackson. That seems like a step down for someone with his special operations background, but maybe he can re-energize basic combat training. BG Schwitters' replacement in Iraq is BG Daniel P. Bolger, who writes an awful lot of books.
