The Fox News Alert now says "Vatican Sources: Pope's Brain, Heart still functioning". I guess it'll be a peaceful passing, at any rate.

Fox has turned into "The Deathwatch Network".
Nothing but death-sitting for two weeks now.
I was not involved in the brain damaged Terry Schivo case, and I am not overly concerned with the 84 y/o Pope's health. Frankly, I am more worried about our boys in the Box.
I am now looking for a new network that does not get fixed on who is being chased in a car on the other side of the country, or who might be dying somewhere on this planet.
All I want is the U.S. and world news, presented in an unbiased manner, or at least with all perspectives represented. Is that too much to ask for?

TR, with all respect, that IS some of the most important world news. The leader of one of the worlds biggest, richest and most powerful religion is preparing his flight to St Peter. It affects a billion (?) people.
Now when it's something like a Royal wedding...now that's really bollocks news.
But this is important.

Note to self: If I ever need a feeding tube or other life support - tell them I am the Pope and not a housewife from Florida.
I think he was an ok Pope as Popes go. I don't falt him for coming out against the GWOT - he's a man of religion and it was his job to cry for peace no matter the cost. At least he didn't come out with a new Liberation Theology. I liked that he spoke a lot of languages and traveled a lot. I think he could have done a much better job with the pedophile priest thing. And he should have hammered Castro. At the end of the day, I think he was basically a pretty good man doing the best he could, like most.
Anyway, Rest in Peace Pope John Paul II.

I thought that they just conducted a ceremony and picked another one?
It has been many years since I saw the last one selected though.
Seems sort of morbid and disrespectful to cover his health 24/7 in another death watch.
I guess that the importance is in the eye of the viewer. An 84 y/o man not related to me dying in Italy concerns me less than a PFC in Iraq.

There's a vote of some kind...I don't recall the details.
Anyway, I can understand where you're coming from, though.
NDD: IIRC, John Paul II had a big hand in kicking Communism out of Poland, and standing up to the Soviets. But you're right with regard to the other things you listed.

The other reason that the conclave vote will be important is because several of candidates for Pope may push for significant change in the arenas that make the PFC's less safe around the world.
One candidate, an Italy-based Nigerian, is thought to have the ability to encourage better relations between Christians and Islamic people from his native Africa. As well, he would be the first Black Pope - significant for people of colour worldwide.
Three other candidates are from South America; all reknowned for there caring for the plight of the poorest in countries more or less run by the drug lords. These are volatile regions also.
If you are not Catholic, I understand the dislike of the Death Watch. However, the appointment of the next Pope may be worth keeping a eye on.

Pope John Paul II may not have liked the GWOT, and thanks NDD for pointing out a very good reason why, but he was strongly and publicly against communism.
I think history will note his role in world events even if our media hasn't.
Rest in Peace John Paul.

As a Catholic, the Popes passing does probably hold more interest to me than some. I guess I never expected him to give his blessing to GWOT (or any fight), but at least he did take a stand on communism. Maybe that could be seen as hypocritical, but Im not saying this for a debate on Theology. He did seem to go harder on the Soviets than he did on satallite or third world commies, but then, he's Polish. Go figure. Ill go with NDD that he should have gone "Old Testiment" on the pedophiles that pretend they are holy men. Hes not perfect, but I have alot of respect for him.
That being said, I believe that the "death watch" is about as blood sucking as the media can get (and thats saying quite a bit). The Pope isnt alone in this, as he is just the latest victim, pushing Mrs. Schiavo out of the spotlight. I would imagine that when its our time to go, all of us would prefer to maintain as much dignity as the situation will allow. This life-leeching practice the toads in the media seem to wallow in yet again shows that as long as they can pull this shit, they will. Personal dignity be damned.
The passing of the Pope has an effect on the direction my church will take in the future. I do not care, however, whats in the last bedpan they changed 5 minutes ago, nor do I really want to know. Let the man go in peace and privacy. We'll move on after.
