Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War
It's not a book, that I know of, but I saw the movie last night. It's about two South Korean brothers during the war. I haven't seen a lot of films on the Korean War, let alone ones about South Korean troops and not the Americans. I'd say something about the film, but I don't want to ruin it if you plan on seeing it. It's a Korean film all the way through, so you have to read subtitles if you don't know Korean. I will say that it's one of the best "see the horror of war" films I have seen. That's something I always liked about foreign war films--there is no Hollywood play in them. Anyone see Stalingrad or The Winter War? If you have, you know what I'm getting at. It's two and a half hour worth of movie--and I'm not ashamed to say, my eyes were watery by the end.
Here it is at Barnes and Noble:

I thought it was a good movie
A little on the long side
The combat scenes are MASSIVELY influenced by Band Of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan
The actors who portray the two brothers do a great job
I'd definitely recommend renting this one

Yeah I agree. It even mentions Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan on the back of the film case--not sure about the wording, but it was something along the lines of "influenced by..."
It is long but worth seeing. I’m going to sit down and watch the special features this afternoon. If I find any interesting tidbits, I’ll let everyone know.

I sure hope you have the option to watch it in English subtitle as well, Sir.
Otherwise, you'll be missing a lot since dubbing in general is awful. It is always a fresh breeze to watch good foreign war movies. They seem to care less about political correctness and just show the way it was. You will see this in Taegukgi.
I've been meaning to recommend this movie for a while, heh...you beat me to it JMH 85.
Another good film to watch about war on the civilian side is grave of fireflies (hotaru no haka).

18C4V Sir, have you watched the movie by any chance? I would like to know what a real operator's take on it.
Another Korean cinema to recommend would be Silmido, which is basically the korean version of dirty dozen. It's based losely on the assasination attempt of SK president in the 60's. Quite an interesting watch, esp. with their wall-to-wall counseling application.
