A General question

A young private has just graduted boot camp, he is so proud of himself. he's walking with his head high and chest out, then runs into a General, the young private snaps to attention and throws up a stong salute. the General says, "hi private how are you?" the private replies, "good sir...sir?...sir could i ask you a question?" "sure private" says the General. "Sir, where did the officer rank symbols come from?" he asked. the General replies with this, " Well, you have to think of a tree, see Second Lt. is a gold bar which is like a weak branch, strong enough but it can bend. A First Lt. is a silver bar which is stronger like a large branch and can take more pressure. The Capt. is 2 connected silver bars like the trunk that supports the branches. The Col. is a bird, a bird that flies over the tree to over see the others. and Generals have stars, meaning we are the highest and we over look every thing." the private has a confused look on his face and says, "Sir, what about Majors and Lt. Col." "Well private" the General says, "that dates back all the way to the Bible with Adam, we just follow history and cover our pricks with leaves."
