Domestic Abuse and Bullying.

Folks:
In my opinion there is no room in my world for domestic abuse or bullying. What bothers me is that in domestic abuse cases there is an almost universal presumption that the man is at fault. It is said that there are many cases of unreported rape because women don't want to be put through the hassle. Well, the same goes for abused men. Who wants to complain that they are abused by their spouses. Women who are cheated on are victims. Men who are cheated on are cuckolds. Women who are dominated by their spouses are victims. Men who are dominated by their spouses are "hen pecked". It has been that way through history.

When I was in the 10th they moved an E-8 Team Sergeant into a room in the barracks, literally under protective custody until they could ship his wife back to the States. The CQ had to check his room hourly to make sure he didn't go back home to his "loving wife." People had noticed various bruises and other signs but he never said a word. Finally he ended up in the dispensary with a broken arm. His wife broke it with a frying pan!! "A Jigs and Maggie" episode. The stuff cartoons were made of.

There is a huge campaign here in SC against domestic violence, but they only consider abused women. I'm not saying women aren't abused by their spouses, merely that probably 50% goes the other way also.

The shows are pure trash, but if any of you have watched Mauri Povich or Jerry Springer will have noticed that the majority of the beating and screaming and cursing comes from hog body and garbage mouthed women. I can't understand how anyone could be married to the behemouths.

Again I don't condone violence or bullying by either sex. I merely ask that both sides get equal billing.

One of the researchers, Richard Gelles, is also the author of several books including sociolgy textbooks used at Campbell University in NC. I always thought he was pretty even handed in his remarks.

The article says that some would define verbal abuse as domestic violence. I don't know if I would or not. I think women are far worse at using verbal assaults on their husbands and children than men are and that over time it can wear you down in a way that physical abuse doesn't.

I couldn't agree more with your assessment on verbal abuse CRad, it can affect one in many ways.

I once knew a man that was being verbally and physically abused by his spouse. He was larger and stronger than her of course, but when she hit or came at him he was very passive. Calling him stupid or other worse things only served to wear him down. I always tried to talk to him about his feelings of self worth and self preservation...don't know what ever happened with him.

I had a Sgt who worked for me who was apparently very different at home than he was at work. His wife came to me one day and explained that he beat her, and showed me the marks and bruises. I asked her why she hadn't called PMO and she told me that she didn't want his career to be effected. Fuck that. His shit was in a lawn display in base housing within an hour, and he was taking up new residence at the Pearl Harbor Brig.

On the flip side, I have seen more than one good Marine end up as an E-1 2nd Award because they hit their wives BACK. The rule is that the man will always lose under that circumstance. For that reason I always instructed my Marines that they were to put their hands in their pockets, and walk out of the house if it came to that. I'd rather have them living in the barracks than living in the brig.
