My recent Small Wars Journal article covered this.....although I assumed the greatest threat would come from an integrated CCP/PLA/.CA digital Superplatform and stablecoin threat.
I’m NO fan of Facebook’s behaviour. And past performance is strongly indicative of future performance.
However, they seem to be making the right initial noises(yep...actions are all that matter) on how to develop and manage a cryptocurrency system for the benefit of all stakeholders.
What I’m noticing is that there is zero involvement of central banks or commercial banks.
This is a consortium of big tech, big VC, and a wide array of payment processors.
Big Tech want to disrupt traditional banking.
Venture Capital(VC)
Payment Processors know that the current credit/debit card based system is a Byzantine structural mess that requires banks who act like tollbooths, and will not last forever.
Weird things happen when you attack a country’s monetary/currency system...especially the ultimate US Dollar franchise.
I figured China’s BATH(Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, Huawei) would have developed a stablecoin and included it as an exportable product along with “total surveillance in a box” to it’s growing One Belt, One Road initiative partner countries.
I didn’t expect FAANG(Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google) to beat them to the punch.
It genuinely has potential to be a good thing, to provide for easier, cheaper, faster protection of people’s purchasing power.
But it could also become another Monster from Jekyll Island Federal Reserve 2.0.
So possible? Probable? Likely?
I suspect we will see a number of powerful networks fighting this from several different directions: Central Banks lose, commercial banks lose, foreign adversaries wanting to undermine the US Dollar lose, etc.
