FAKER! Man admits he lied to Fox News about Navy SEAL service
No excuse for this. How does it happen that a person can lie to so many for so long? What wreckage this guy left for his family. Fox should have done a better job of checking their facts before they ran the story in the first place.

FAKER! Man admits he lied to Fox News about Navy SEAL service
Navy veteran John Garofalo appeared on a Fox News segment this month, showing off a massive presidential seal he carved for President Trump while receiving praise for his service in Vietnam as a SEAL.
The piece was broadcast nationally and featured cascading shots of all Garofalo’s medals. Online, it went viral, racking up 1.5 million Facebook views on Fox’s Facebook page.
“The Vietnam War veteran served seven years as a member of the nation’s first Navy SEAL team,” Fox News reporter Bryan Llenas said. “He was awarded 22 commendations, including two Purple Hearts.”
Llenas later called the 72-year-old New York State resident a “tough, tough man.”
“He was listed twice during his service in Vietnam as missing in action,” Llenas noted at the segment’s close.
“God bless John Garofalo,” an anchor said. “We certainly hope maybe the president is listening.”
But when Navy Times contacted Garofalo Thursday, Garofalo admitted he had lied and never served in Vietnam, never received a Purple Heart and was never a SEAL.

If you haven't served, you don't know the questions to ask or how to check. In 35 years living in L.A., I challenged almost every "homeless" vet I ran saw that begged outside of supermarkets. Not one could answer even the simplest of questions. You'd think that they'd do at least a little homework to succeed at their chosen profession.

The same lack of empathy which drives these behaviors also prevents them from seeing why they will get caught.
Call the sociopath person "A", and everybody else person B, C, D, etc.
From their perspective, A interacts with B and A interacts with C, but they don't fully perceive B interacting with C.
They don't fully get the idea that their lies with be checked somewhere beyond their control.
The idea that B and C can check with D, someone they've never met, exceeds their ability to view matters from someone else's perspective.

I have a standing personal SOP that if a homeless person claiming to be a veteran asks me for money, I will ask them to produce a copy of their DD214. If they have one, I will go to the bank and draw out $50, go back and give it to them.
I have yet to pay out to anyone.

With the percentage of those who serve in our armed forces so low, it's not hard for posers to ply their trade. Even among those who have served in some way like the subject of this thread, many military member simply "take them at their word" and never question them -- if they even know the appropriate questions to ask.
After all...the theory behind the "PX Commandos" didn't just start....

I worked too hard for my retirement money to go to anyone holding up a sign proclaiming to have been a veteran. Especially if they can afford to smoke, that is a wealthy person's habit .
