Great story!
Similar thing happened to my Uncle. AT gunner with the 30th ID at Mortain, France ("The lost battalion") surrounded during "le contre attaque". In 1984 he received a Bronze Star with V. I was 14 at the time and don't remember how the award was submitted, but remember the ceremony.
