Army deserter faked war wounds, got tens of thousands of dollars
An Army deserter from Morganton is accused of receiving tens of thousands of dollars in veteran benefits by faking war wounds and military honors.
Roy Lee Ross Jr., 64, faces up to 35 years in prison on charges of executing a scheme to defraud the Veterans Administration, making false statements in connection with the delivery of VA health care benefits, stealing from the VA and making a false claim for travel benefits from the VA.
According to a federal indictment released on Friday, Ross enlisted in the Army in 1973 and was stationed stateside and in West Germany.
But he never served in Vietnam or Korea, was not in the Special Forces and never was wounded as he claimed, according to the indictment.

The amount of frauds in the VA system is staggering. Another epic fail for the US government. And seriously who cares? It's just your tax dollars those morons are wasting.

He should have to change bed pans and work at his VA hospital for the rest of his living days as restitution.

And I'm waiting for the prosecution of the VA staff members who approved those benefits and validated his (not)-combat injuries.
Still waiting...

I hope this guy is tried, convicted, and sentenced to prison. While I like the idea of some TDY to empty bed pans, I think actually being the bedpan would be better.
Everytime one of these cases surface, it makes me wonder how many more of these are still going on. The VA has grown right along with big government. The bigger it grows, the harder it is to police. I'm glad to learn they have exposed this one.

I like the way you think! And RF1, great idea to be the bedpan!
CSB sir, am not familiar with how the VA is supposed to vet those who come through the system, but obviously they dropped the ball on this sorry excuse for a human being!
My thoughts go out to the real Men of the SF community who shed blood and tears fighting the good fight. They are the real heroes, IMO.
Posers be damned!

Who the hell vets/approves this crap without a background check.
In this day/age it should be easy.
As TS said, there are frauds out the wazzoo getting Govt. checks monthy...total frauds and partial frauds that have learned how to game the system.

Yes sir! VA fraud cases remind me of narcotics cases. For every one you catch and prosecute, there is 10 that go by. I hate thieves of every kind!

Roy Lee Ross Jr. has nothing to worry about.... hell, if he is smart he should even be able to get somebody to buy him a new house
...or give him his own reality TV show
...or publish his "true life story" about the time he killed that big-name terrorist
...or pay for his PTSD therapy
...or hire him for a high paying consulting job
...or just pay for all of his beers at the club as long as he keeps telling stories
Being a poser these days is all the rage. In fact, the "bad guy" nowadays isn't the poser, its the mean spirited folks trying to derail his claims of heroism and valor.
Hell, even our national leaders cant tell the difference between a deserter and a hero anymore. In fact, his next move should be converting to islam and coming out as a gay transgendered democrat.
...all the while, the REAL veterans are portrayed as hyper-patriots bent on domestic terrorism.

Ya know, I think you're just about right about the poser coming out on top in some cases. With so much PC Police in some media outlets, things just get spun, and shape so as to make the real veteran take all the heat.
With this guy claiming he was Special Forces as well, we may have a new "Hall of Shame" candidate. He has made plenty of money, and is a complete fraud and liar.

There are vastly more Vietnam veterans in the VA system than ever served in Vietnam. The number who publicly claim Vietnam service is even higher. I think the latter number is around four times the number who actually served in country.

$750,000 defraud
How about that IH ARNG who conned the VA and government to the Tune of $750,000. He even got DA to i9ssue a PH certificate. The action that he used to validate his claims was an inbound RPG that landed 300 yards from him. He plea bargained 14 counts down to 2 and $250,000 restitution.
