Loss of internet connectivity after update

At some point you might experience loss of internet connectivity after doing a windows update for Windows XP. This is typically caused from malware that has inserted its self into the TCP stack. Symptoms, outside of no internet, would be an IP of 169.xxx.xxx.xxx or an exclamation mark on the connectivity icon on the task bar.

The following will correct the problem 99% of the time.

1. Run your favorite spyware cleaner and do a good job. Then . . .
2. Reset the TCP stack. This is accomplished by opening a command prompt and typing netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt or netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt. The difference in the 2 lines is one specifies a location for the reset log. It is best to do both of them if you don't know where the log resides since it won't hurt anything.
