Domestic or International... (Terrorism that is)
My what a slippery slope таварыш
Quote:
But federal prosecutors tackling domestic extremists still lack an important legal tool they have used extensively in dozens of prosecutions against Islamic State-inspired suspects: a law that prohibits supporting designated terrorist groups.
Carlin and other Justice Department officials declined to say if they would ask Congress for a comparable domestic extremist statute, or comment on what other changes they might pursue to toughen the fight against anti-government extremists

It's not just the groups themselves, it goes to the "material support" discussion. Based upon the recent history of government agencies loose definition and application of who or what is a domestic threat this is a great way to silence dissent. The political-correctness (reality avoidance) being exercised makes it unpopular to point out what really IS a threat.

Not a 1L,, but doesn't the RICA act cover most if not all terrorist activity?? At least on a Federal level??

Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act,, An Act relating to the control of organized crime in the United States.
Enacted by the 91st United States Congress
Effective October 15, 1970, Public law 91-452
Introduced in the Senate as S. 30 by John L. McClellan (D–AR)
Passed the Senate on January 23, 1970 (74-1)
Passed the House on October 7, 1970 (341-26)
Signed into law by President Richard Nixon on October 15, 1970
The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, commonly referred to as the RICO Act or simply RICO, is a United States federal law that provides for extended criminal penalties and a civil cause of action for acts performed as part of an ongoing criminal organization. The RICO Act focuses specifically on racketeering, and it allows the leaders of a syndicate to be tried for the crimes which they ordered others to do or assisted them in doing, closing a perceived loophole that allowed a person who instructed someone else to, for example, murder, to be exempt from the trial because he did not actually commit the crime personally.[1]
RICO was enacted by section 901(a) of the Organized Crime Control Act of 1970 (Pub.L. 91–452, 84 Stat. 922, enacted October 15, 1970), and is codified at 18 U.S.C. ch. 96 as 18 U.S.C. §§ 1961–1968. G. Robert Blakey, an adviser to the United States Senate Government Operations Committee, drafted the law under the close supervision of the committee's chairman, Senator John Little McClellan. It was enacted as Title IX of the Organized Crime Control Act of 1970, and signed into law by Richard M. Nixon.
While its original use in the 1970s was to prosecute the Mafia as well as others who were actively engaged in organized crime, its later application has been more widespread.

In the past as with the MIAC report the SPLC has been the pointman on who and what is designated an extremist or extremeist group. Which is kind of scary considering that most if not all the SPLC's boogy men are White, and they have the opinion that only minorities can be the victims of predjudice and racism.
Someone pointed out last week on well known Left Wing website that BLM is not an extremist group because they are not viewed as a political group or antigovernment.....whereas the folks in Oregon are antigovernment and deserve what they got.....which falls inline with the SPLC's line of thought.
it wouldn't be too far off the mark to say that such a law existed, the 1st Amendment would be gone and any voice that talked out against the government would disappear.

There is already a domestic law against what you say. It's 'sedition' and can be wrapped up into treason if properly applied.
This whole "domestic terrorism" thing just sounds catchy and is mainstream. Unless you are a foreign national or undocumented alien.
The gubermit (IMHO) has taken the use of the word "terrorist" to new and stupid extremes.

What better argument than to expand the "terrorist" definition to have wider assumed authority to violate civil rights and privacy? Dilute the true focus.
Can't help but wonder about the motive. Many of the same organizations that are looking for this "flexibility" are sounding the alarm on " Going Dark"...

Hillary Clinton is ABOVE THE LAW!
(At least that is what the FBI thinks, now just wonder for a second what would happen if I were to place classified, top secret TSSCI material on this website or our server? Would I go to jail? Would you?)
Hillary Clinton is ABOVE THE LAW!

IMHO JJ the biggest impediment to prosecutors using a RICO charge would be the stipulation that income has to be derived from the pattern of racketeering activities. Unless the FBI is going to claim that the multiple bags of dicks received by the Bundy's is income, it would appear that the easiest charge for them to try would be a conspiracy with respect to that specific case.

Domestic Terrorism is a way for the Obama Administration to draw attention away from Islamic Terrorism. Obama loves Islam more than this country and will do anything he can to protect it.
