114 House Dems Urge Obama to Sidestep Congress for Gun Control

On November 23 Representative Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA)
(D-CA-5th) and 113 of his Democrat colleagues submitted a letter urging President Obama to circumvent Congress by using executive action to expand background checks to cover private gun sales.
The letter says:


The Republican leadership in Congress continues to sit on their hands as gun violence becomes America’s new normal,” and asks Obama to simply go away the people’s elected leadership and institute gun control unilaterally…Since Congress won’t step up, the President should. Through executive action he can help keep guns from criminals, domestic abusers and the dangerously mentally ill. Something needs to be done and since Republicans in Congress can’t even bring themselves to hold a vote, this is the best option to make our country safer and save lives

The House Democrats’ push for executive action came on the same day that 24 Senate Democrats urged Obama to go around Congress and implement more gun control via executive action. The Senate action, which was headed by Sens. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Chris Murphy (D-CT), followed on the heels of Senator Sen. Tim Kaine's (D-VA) calls for action following the August 26 on-air attack against a Virginia reporter and her cameraman.

The August attack by gunman Vester Flanagan and the October 1 attack by a gunman at Umpqua Community College (UCC) both resulted in calls for executive action to expand background checks. However, such calls miss the larger fact that expanding background checks would not have stopped either attack, as Flanagan and the UCC gunman both passed background checks to acquire their firearms. The same is true of the July 23 attack at the Lafayette movie theater, the July 16 attack at Chattanooga military offices, and the June 17 attack at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. The alleged gunmen in all of these instances passed background checks to acquire their firearms.

So basically, we have 114 House Democrats and 24 Senate Democrats pushing gun control for gun control’s sake.

I learned about US Executive, Legislative, and Judicial 3 branches of government working in concert and/or to check each other's power, but this seems dictatorial regardless of who is in the big seat.

What is the check to prevent Executive Action before enacted and the check to remove Executive Action once enacted, if strongly opposed?

A STRONG Speaker of the House, backed by a STRONG GOP Majority/Minority leader in the Senate.

Something we haven't seen in almost a decade.

The reason you haven't seen this a lot is because everybody up to this point had enough respect for the opinion of the people not to affect Executive Action that goes against public will.
Congress can countermand it.
Unfortunately, we have a bunch of non-dems (on paper) in that organization that are skeered to do anything that is counter to the whims of the emperor.
If you'll remember, people whispered and looked furtively over their shoulders before saying anything negative about Obama. They thought his omniscient and omnipotent network would scoop them up and whisk them off to Black Syph island, or something.
IMO, the "Republican" Congress never lost that sense of trepidation when dealing with the savant calling the shots inside the Beltway.
Gonna be a long year; he's got nothin' to lose. Sanders might easily turn out to be a rightwinger, comparatively, by next Halloween.

It sounds like an attempt at feel good legislation that does nothing and/or making themselves look busy. I kinda doubt the guberment can enforce background checks on private sales, it would be like the TSA checking baggage.

Now all those stolen guns out there used in crime, 20 years old, haven't been cleaned in a few years, won't be able to change hands. I guess those thugs are now going to have to resort to cyber currency on the dark web to get their hands on firepower.

What I mean by "boil over" is that this action might be what finally sends the majority over the top legislatively with regard to being force fed harmful pap-even the slugs and rinos.

Well I see 114 democrats that should just walk away from government since they don't want to be part of the actual process of being a people's representative and have also broken their oath of office.

We are quickly heading into DEMOCRACY (aka Mob Rule)!
