Jack Hughes, 66, said when he came home from battle in the 1960s, people threw rotten eggs at his uniform. Vietnam was an unpopular war and he expected that back then.
He said he didn't expect to be assaulted by other Marines when he arrived Saturday.
Hughes, who lives in Gastonia, showed Channel 9 the jacket he wore Saturday with his medals and ribbons.
He cried thinking about the feeling he had when he said Marines at the airport accused him of pretending to be a veteran.
"I just can't believe that one veteran or group of veterans would do that to somebody else,” Hughes said.
He said as he got off the plane from a Veterans Day event in St. Louis, another man, claiming to be a Marine himself, walked towards him yelling.
"Your ribbons are crooked. You’re a fake. You are a phony," Hughes said the man shouted.
Hughes said he tried to explain that he earned two Purple Hearts in battle in Vietnam. He showed Channel 9 a picture he said was of an officer presenting one of the medals in a hospital and telegrams to his parents, informing them that Hughes had been wounded in battle.
He said another man at the airport Saturday tried to rip off his ribbons. Hughes said the man said to him, "I'm an active duty Marine.' And he just ripped the buttons right off."
He said the men were recording the encounter and taunting him with people watching.
He showed Channel 9 his VA health care card, but they insisted he was faking.
"I gave everything I had, for them to degrade it that way,” Hughes said.
Hughes said police finally intervened. He wanted the man who he said assaulted him arrested, but officers told Channel 9 it was a simple assault, which is a misdemeanor.
The officer made the other man apologize.
Hughes said that's not enough. He wants to make sure this doesn't happen to any other veterans.

Better write up:
"Jack Hughes wears full ribbon rack (including one Purple Heart ribbon, that is, no oak leaf cluster), and then pins an oversize EGA on his lapel, THEN pins on two Purple Heart full size medals on his right chest, all on acivilian suit coat, then can't understand why active duty Marines would call him a buffon."

How about whether or not they are real, you look like a clown.

Maybe he should have carried a sign "Hey everybody look at me... I've got two Purple Hearts."

Looks like a nut or a poser...he has a star on his PH ribbon not an oakleaf...that indicates to me he has some other issue.
What kind of actual soldier plays dress up like that?

A Marine vet with 2 purple hearts cried over this? Gunny should toss him some tissues.

As this occurred at the St. Louis airport it's merely a 2 hour drive to the University of Missouri where he could file a hurt feelings report.

Despite the ridiculous appearance, it would have been prudent to get some facts before tearing into some old guy in public. There's a saying about fighting a pig in the mud...

He certainly looks the clown,,
AND that is one of the 1st signs of a poser,,
But there are others that likewise forgot to check FM 670-1.

I think a little more homework before a public beating may have been wiser?

I never understood the mentality behind wearing those military "decorations".

I like me a good "Free Pineland" hat, but that's about as far as I'll go with the displays.

Stolen Valor on FB says he is for real, he looks bad no doubt about that and he may have some issues but these guys should never have laid a hand on him.

The Marines and Navy denote bronze and silver stars to indicate additional awards for their Achivement and Commendation medals. May be the case for the PH. Wikipedia says it is, but obviously that may not be the case.

You know I think you are correct....they also put a V on a bronze star for fun.

If he's valid he has mental issues...dementia or whatever...he's off bubble.
