Next thing you know we'll start using the Squad Diamond from the '50's.

Speaking as a former Infantry Platoon Leader in Iraq who saw a fair amount of this 'next gen' tech sit under bunks and unused due to lack of experience, confidence, expert knowledge to fix and put back into use (the same kind our Soldiers have for their radios, nods, weapons, etc), I am a bit skeptical.

Pushing the knowledge and cross training goes a long way but at a certain point you hit diminishing returns with tech and infantry. No ill speak, I love the infantry but you truly do need to keep it simple.

That said, smart grenade launchers and squad level UAVs do SOUND cool...

It would end up being the most important member of the group! The can holder, cope on one side, grizzly on the other!

But it does sound like a very interesting topic, and we need it if it helps get our more powerful conventional troops back in the fight.

Does a rifle squad leader really need GPS tracking so that he can keep track of his men? Maybe, but I dont think so.

...maybe more important than an infantry squad leader keeping his nose buried in a GPS for "SA" of his squad is the slight possibility that he maintain situational awareness of enemy presence in his vicinity.

*note*
good leaders just looooove to use the word "SA"
...if you don't say "SA" in a briefing at least once - you probably suck as a small unit leader

Am I the only one that finds it odd that these days even the military has started becoming more concerned with tracking its own people than with rooting out the enemy?
...thoughts?
