Fort Bragg soldiers receive the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, other medals for actions in Afghanistan

By Drew Brooks Military editor | Updated 6 hours ago

They fought enemies from the shattered walls of combat outposts, braved enemy fire and risked their own lives to save others.

On Tuesday, soldiers who typically serve far from the headlines were thrust into the spotlight, when 61 members of the 3rd Special Forces Group received 68 medals, ranging from the nation's second-highest award for valor to the Purple Heart.

Gen. Joseph Votel, commanding general of U.S. Special Operations Command, presented the awards, all for service in Afghanistan, in the John F. Kennedy Auditorium on Fort Bragg.
