Fort Bragg Report: Looking back on Operation Power Pack

Fort Bragg Report: Looking back on Operation Power Pack

http://www.fayobserver.com/blogs/new...ef520c75c.html

"This spring, the Observer will take a look back on Operation Power Pack in the Dominican Republic.

Thousands of Fort Bragg troops deployed to that country 50 years ago this April and in the coming weeks, I'll be talking to veterans of the peacekeeping mission....."

Nice little video clip at the story.

The FayOb office shown in the clip was on the 500 block of Hay Street just behind the big tree - which is now on the grounds of the Spec Ops Museum.

Did they award CIBs for OPP?

In basic in '67, I was probably the youngest and smallest recruit, but we had an SDS that was shorter than me and looked younger. But, he had a CIB with a Star and wore a 1st CAV combat patch from Vietnam (from his shoulder to his elbow ). I don't recall if he wore jump wings or not. I was told that he got his first CIB in the Dominican Republic.

Dom Rep CIB plus Nam service would not qualify for 2nd Award (star).

Thanks. That's what I was wondering. Clearly he wasn't in Korea.

When the 82nd Airborne sank the SS Santo Domingo

When the 82nd Airborne sank the SS Santo Domingo

http://www.fayobserver.com/blogs/new...9c2462186.html

"...Why would the 82nd Airborne museum be interested in photographs of a Dominican freighter? Because they sank it..."

Wonder if they have a sunk ship as one of their battle streamers? Just kidding.

When I first got to the 7th SFGA, there were guys who had been in Dom Rep - I think there was 1 B Team from E Company (SF Companies then were like Battalions now) of the 7th SFGA committed to OPP.

Symposium to mark 50th anniversary of Operation Power Pack

Symposium to mark 50th anniversary of Operation Power Pack

http://www.fayobserver.com/military/...e6ab667cd.html

"The 82nd Airborne Division will host a "Veterans' Symposium" to mark the 50th anniversary of Operation Power Pack.

The U.S. military operation in the Dominican Republic from 1965 to 1966 is little known apart from military buffs and its thousands of veterans, most of whom were serving with Fort Bragg units.

The symposium has been added to the 82nd Airborne's All American Week activities.

All American Week is an annual celebration of past and current paratroopers.

The symposium is scheduled for May 20 at 1 p.m. at the 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial Museum..."

Lots of things going on during All American Week
