Pepper Spray Clean-up

There's not much on the internet about removing pepper spray from skin, except to use milk or Dawn dishwashing liquid.

I thought maybe you gentlemen could suggest other methods.

We've had several occasions of bear spray blowback or direct contact when out in the woods. Not much you can do with a bottle of water... Is there something simple that works, can be carried easily in a pack (like hand wipes?), or that we'd already have on hand?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Susan

(PS. I know, I know... I'm talkin' to a crowd that would rather carry a weapon than bear spray. We do that too. )

Hey Susan,
Here are some general guidelines UC Berkeley campus police put together (scroll down). Please feel free to skip all the lawyer'd-up you-shouldn't-do-it stuff. Some folks forget after they've taken pains (no pun) over exposed skin that what they were wearing is still going to be a problem. Simple flushing is still a prime measure; that eats into the water supply no question.

"pepper spray decon" will get you quite a few search-engine hits and some individual products possibly.

I suppose it's asking too much to request the bear move themselves into a down-wind position, huh....

They usually do move on when asked politely. A calm, "hello bear" gets them moving in the opposite direction. Even this momma Kodiak brown bear didn't want any trouble, though at the time I was getting nervous. Hubby stood by with a weapon while I was taking photos. When the bear got about 100 feet from camp I asked him, "When are you going to let her know we're here?" And he said, "When you're done taking pictures." I was done - real quick.

Thanks for link to the info. I'll have a look.

Susan

I've never tried this with Pepper Spray, CS, or other Irritants, but with "Skydrol", an aircraft hydraulic fluid that messes with you similar to Cap or CS, Mineral Oil kills it!!!

I would appreciate some feedback from those that are in contact with the Cap and how the Mineral Oil works , please....Back Channels Only!!

My (former) school has a chronic problem with sticky-fingered teenagers in the neighborhood; one of them sprayed me when I chased him off the property.

Soap, water and a clean towel were enough for cleaning myself up.

Wow, that's some serious pepper spray if it causes a uterus to fall out...

This is about the best advice. After the rinse, nothing works better than fresh air. No matter how good I wash up, the next time I get in the shower the fire starts again.

BTDT,

Wash, rinse, repeat. Air dry.
Very true and works well with laundry too.

Team Sergeant, that's what I was thinking of. Something small and portable. I'll check those decon wipes out. Thanks!

Craigpo and Badger52 - Alaska is a great place to be. Few people, lots of beautiful places.

Thanks everyone. The consensus seems to be that towel, soap, and water does the trick.

Keeping the safety on the canister does the best job.

Field trials...

Just happened to think of Requiem's thread after running into this Ferguson-related article.

Quote:
Activists are advised how to carry liquid antacid mixed with water to counteract the effects of pepper spray and even how to dress for unseasonably cold weather, with overnight temperatures expected to fall to well below freezing in the coming days.
Couple different suck factors involved. Got curious anyway; active ingredients in a tablespoon of Maalox:

Aluminum hydroxide (equiv. to dried gel USP) 400 mg
Magnesium hydroxide 400 mg
Simethicone 40 mg
