Tough young lady...
For championing womens rights...after being shot in the head by Islamists for the sin of 'going to school'.
The only place I saw school girls safely going to school in Astan was in Kabul.
I had a very good interpreter, excellent actually as he would mimic my inflection and attitude when I was teaching ..Farhad, a Shia Pashtu from near the Iranian border, articulate, educated and computer savvy. He hated the Taliban and told me once the only way to win in Astan was to kill every male over 35 (he was 29).
I asked him what he thought about girls going to school expecting a 'cosmopolitan' response...
"Mr. Pat, women should not go to school (chasing a fly away hand gesture here) there is no need, and the Prophet forbids it"........
Would he harm school girls going to school...no, never....but I don't think he'd 'get involved' as 'The Prophet forbids it"......

I find it interesting that the only significant protests that I have seen coming from the Muslim community (or anywhere else for that matter) are coming from women (Malala, the head of the student American Muslim organization at Yale, the group of roving bands of women in India and Pakistan that identify rapists and beat them).
Where are the women's rights advocacy organizations like NOW on what has to be the single most important women's rights issue of the last 100 years???

Malala
Read her book, this girl has a real problem with being second when it comes to her education, she hates being second. She can love and criticize her country eloquently at the same time. Am I wrong in wanting to adopt her (yeah i watched the Jon Stewart interview) Most of all she is brave and she really does care, she walks the talk as someone said. The thing she said that got me though is she thought of the girls in her class as all just like her and she really is not that special in her own mind, differ with her there.
