Good morning all

As the war against terror continues we see that methods of aggresion are shared amongst our foes; with that, heads up to this method:

Tunnels dug from several hundred meters from a base to under the base, filled with explosives under the base, and BAM!


I haven't heard of this happening iver there, but it might do as news of the successes here propegates.


"Five Israel Defense Forces soldiers were killed and six wounded in the Gaza Strip when a booby-trapped tunnel blew up under an army outpost near Rafah on Sunday."

The attack began at about 5:30 P.M., when a bomb went off under the JVT outpost, located some 200 meters east of the Rafah crossing. The explosion, which destroyed the eastern part of the outpost, killed two soldiers and buried a third under the rubble; it also caused most of the injuries. The third soldier was later reported dead.

Immediately afterward, two armed Palestinians penetrated the outpost from the west and shot and killed two other soldiers. Soldiers returned fire, killing one of the Palestinians, a Fatah operative. His companion, a Hamas operative, escaped, but was apparently wounded. Hamas said he escaped with a weapon belonging to one of the soldiers.

Later, another bomb went off by an armored personnel carrier parked near the outpost, but
caused no casualties. The wounded soldiers were evacuated to Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva, and rescue crews were brought in to start digging for the soldier buried under the rubble. The digging went on well into the night, under constant Palestinian fire. Helicopter gunships and other troops were sent in to provide cover for the rescue workers.

Hamas told the Palestinian media that the tunnel under the outpost was some 250 meters long, and some 1.5 tons of explosives were used to blow it up. The IDF's preliminary investigation confirmed these claims. The organization also said that preparations for the attack took about four months which undermines its claim that the operation was to avenge "the killing of the commander and symbol, Yasser Arafat."

To quote a thread title from NDD. "Everything old is new again" There are really not a lot of lessons learned in war as much as mistakes revisited. TR's post is a good example. Here is another one.


"In January, 1917, General Sir Herbert Plumer, gave orders for 20 mines to be placed under German lines at Messines. Over the next five months more than 8,000 metres of tunnel were dug and 600 tons of explosive were placed in position. Simultaneous explosion of the mines took place at 3.10 on 7th June. The blast killed an estimated 10,000 soldiers and was so loud it was heard in London. "

Expect someone to be quietly relieved after this one. Lessons learned were not put in place.

27 June 2004 at the Gush Katif Gaza outpost, Hamas dug down 7m and out 350m towards outpost and split into three tunnels. Each tunnel was loaded with up to 650k of bang and initiated. To say the least commanders were placed on notice relative to outward perimeter security via unscheduled probes, thermal sourcing for air shafts etc. Whats amazing is that with the intel system in place that they didn't catch it in progress. Although rumors have abounded that parts of the al Quassam brigades in Gaza (who took responsibility for Gush Katif) utilize the "isolation and forced op rule".
Meaning, your with us till the job is done - no phone calls, pizza delivery etc. and from the Hamas video of gush Katif, even prayers were conducted in the tunnel.

Agreed, many brave young Druze warriors lost their lives in this one. Big fuck up.

Reminds me of a line in Gardens of Stone. They are arguing over wheter the war is winnable or not and the young new LT Jackie says something the the effect of "How can you lose a war to people who fight with bows and arrows." and the answer was along the lines "How can you win a war against people who are willing to fight you with them?"

Kind of the same thing I guess. The shear determination and belief in the cause is sometimes all that is needed. If you have the motivation and determination then there is not much else you need.
