Everyday People

Everyday people from the 1890's through the turn of the century.

"The photographer who rejected racism in the American south"

http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-28838957

"At the turn of the 20th Century, life was incredibly difficult for the African-American community in the southern states of the US. But one self-taught photographer used his camera to challenge racial barriers and capture the diversity of the American South.

"I did not know my grandfather but I am very proud that he was able to capture these people in pictures - whether they were black or white, rich or poor, farmers or businessmen," says Martha Sumler. ..."

Looking through the pictures - they are just everyday people.

Notice how they were almost lost.

That is one of the first things I noticed. More often than not, photographs from that period very seldom showed people of so many races and ages appearing to be so "happy." Even though that time in history was "hard", many of the photographs from then seemed as though the poses utilized always exhibited "depression" and "misery." It was nice to see some laughter that appears to be genuine and not necessarily staged.

Day out at the gallows and other bygone photographic oddities

http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-29246071

"Lined up for a family photograph, Victorians often looked grim and staid - people from another era. But curator Chris Wild offers a fascinating snapshot of family life that reveals the Victorians and Edwardians were often more modern than we think...."

Like the ones at the end about "national dress".
