Was There a 24th Group?

Ran into an older man at a hotel in Chattanooga, TN wearing a ball cap with Special Forces on it. Asked if he had been SF and he hesitated and then said yes. Asked him what Group and barely speaking he said "The 24th". I go back to the early 60s and never heard of that group. Anyone know anything? He left before I could ask more questions.

Mid 60's?

Army Reserves? HI? Mid 60's? Fort DeRussy?

All I got was what I posted. He didn't seem to want to talk after I asked what Group. I have made an internet search for the 24th and haven't found anything other than a 24th SF Group that someone started on Military.com

Making an update. Finally found a 24th Group on Wikipedia. It states they were at DeRussy but no time frame. All Wikipedia had was the flash.

I was in HI in the mid 60s but don't remember them. Was with Marine's 3rd Recon from 62-63 and when I switched to the Army they sent me back to HI with the 25th in 64. Left in 65.

FWIW, The 24th was activated on 6 January at Ft. DeRussy, HI and deactivated on 31 January 1966. Info on page 199 of Geoff Barkers "Concise History of US Army Special Operations Forces" Vol 1, 2nd Edition

Thanks for info. Clear why I hadn't heard of them as I was in Nam 66-67 & 69-70.

If they were activated the 6th and deactivated the 31st they had a short history.
