Interesting.

I thought I was doing good when I had an '85 VW diesel Rabbit that would get 40MPG on the highway. It was a good little car too and I ended up getting 200,000 miles out of it before the motor self-destructed.

When we turned in our Jetta, at 29.5K the running average was 41.9 MPG. The reason? We want the bigger Touareg, but it still gets 29-32 open highway at 75 MPH..

Diesel is so maligned by the tree buggers, gas industry and American car manufactures.

Way down here we're getting micro diesels packed in 4 door hatchbacks that can get 50mpg around town and 75mpg on open road at optimal fuel economy speeds(about 60mph).

Mostly euro spec stuff……but include some Ford compact models(or maybe just motors) that I don't think are available in the US.

The cars are small by American standards, but larger/heavier and much more comfortable(rough equivalent to base model luxury car of 10-15 years ago) than those lightweight micro boxes from the 1980's.

But we're also paying over $6 a gallon for petrol.
