9/11 Disabilty Fraud Scheme Crackdown Nets Dozens Of Arrests
ABCNews, 7 Jan 2014

Scores of retired New York City police, fire and corrections officers are being arrested Tuesday in a crackdown on disability fraud.

The Manhattan District Attorney's office accuses the retired workers, along with their lawyers and doctors, of faking work-related stress including feigned psychiatric disorders related to 9/11.

The arrests, which cap a two-year investigation aided by federal investigators, the city's Department of Investigation and the NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau, will be announced by the Manhattan DA at 1 p.m. news conference.

The alleged fraud cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars in improper Social Security benefits.

None of the accused actually suffered from debilitating stress, and authorities say many were caught working after retirement, a violation of disability benefits.

Some of the retired officers also retained their gun permits, which is illegal if they are being treated for a stress.

Most of the arrests are taking place in the city, but about 20 are out of state, mainly Florida.

Wish they would investigate VA disability claims with such enthusiasm. Might clear out the system for some of us with valid claims.

I concur.

I hate to air this publicly but have to agree. I am sorry to say that my father is such a person. He spent 4 years in the marine Corps during the Vietnam era and I do not recall that he ever actually went. I remember him saying that he spent almost all his time in Kansas City and that he hated his time in the Corps. He called it the worst decision of his life.

Fast forward 40 years and he is diagnosed with Type II diabetes....Definitely a result of his lifestyle of poor to no exercise and hobby of baking. However, the VA fast tracked him to care for the diabetes and blamed it on Agent Orange exposure. For the first time in his life, he now has a Marine Corps and Vietnam Veteran stickers on his car...

As someone that retired from the military and feel as though I would be weak for trying to blame my service on my creaking and cracking knees, I am very conflicted with his readiness to game the VA....
