Move Over Vodka; Korean Soju's Taking A Shot At America

Move Over Vodka; Korean Soju's Taking A Shot At America

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/201...hot-at-america

"Every year, the trade magazine Drinks International puts out a of the top-selling alcohols in the world, and in the category of spirits, there is one brand that more than doubles the sales of its closest competitor every year. Smirnoff, Jack Daniel's and Bacardi don't even come close.

That top-seller is South Korea's Jinro soju, a clear spirit traditionally made of rice. It's about 20-percent alcohol and has a light, slightly sweet taste. The reason you've probably never heard of it is because Jinro does less than 5 percent of its sales in the U.S. It makes up for that by dominating the market in South Korea, and doing brisk business in Japan and China........"

Never had it. Any comments from those who've been to Korea or Japan?

Concur. Pure unadulterated swill. We were always told to pour off the top couple of inches of a freshly opened bottle to get rid of the formaldehyde (hence CDRODA396's comment about taxidermy shelves). Even that didn't help much. Cured me of drinking to excess at a very young age. The only things worse were Orange or Grape Oscar (in quantity - that shit was sneaky) and Makli (sp?). Course that's MOO, some of the hard core alcoholics I knew swore by the stuff. Personally I think that was because they could buy copious quantities of it in the vill' with the profit they made from their ration card transactions and stay blind drunk living high on the hog for the duration of a weekend pass. Cheap drink for cheap drunks.

But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.

I sort of liked Mokli (sp) It was served in some cheap ass tea pot. In Chunchon is was at places that had grilled chicken and on the east coast with seafood. Soju on the other hand I NEVER drank unless we were with Koreans celebrating something and there was no reasonable way to refuse. They already knew I wasn't Baptist.

In Korean, "soju" means "bad juju".

As a UP (Unit Police) at Cp Howze in '89, I can't begin to tell you how many times Soju was the downfall of a military career.

I mistakenly bought a bottle (plastic) thinking it was water on my way into the interior; I didn't trust the water. I found out about it when I rinsed my mouth after brushing my teeth. Lesson learned. I still have the bottle although the contents evaporated.

Too many JINRO Honchos at Camp Castle when I was there, it's consumption and Mokli was banned for all except the KATUSAS and that was only at the KATUSA watering hole there on the compound.

Lesson learned when drinking soju on Hooker Hill. Start drinking at the top of the hill. It is much easier on your buddies to help you down rather than up.
