I agree with some things and disagree with others. Personally I hate it when people leave trash in shopping carts or leave them scattered around the parking lot, but if a non-military member* doesn't care enough about their life to wear a seatbelt, or if someone is listening to loud music** in the car between 0800-2200 I don't see those things falling into the listed categories.
*I say non-military member only because if a military member does this and dies then it affects unit readiness/cohesion, not because I see it as a lack of pride/self-respect.
**Not talking about those with excessively loud music (subjective I know) where you can clearly hear the words over your TV inside and where their bass rattles things inside of your house; not talking about those that you can hear when outside or in your car and they drive by.

Trashy troop and MilFams
Guys and gals this is one of my most un-favorite subjects....As an old soldier (now) and a military brat I grew up in a world (late 50's-60's) where if you were a woman, you didn't have curlers in your hair, bra showing, tattoos. Kids were not allowed in the commissary unless over 10 or 12 and had an ID card, yep you didn't get an ID card at birth. If your yard was a mess some NCO would come to your house give you a warning, next time they would move you out.... Presidio Ca. circa 1960!!
Anyway walk into a Commissary/PX today and hell you could see better dressed people in Rick's Lounge...just saying if it fits, don't get mad at me. And that is for men or woman, gang bangers or hookers not sure which is which anymore.... If all else is being taken care of good for the CSM.

...personal responsibility. Is that even authorized?
Man that guy is SO going to get fired as soon as they can dig up some dirt on him.
Personal responsibility and self respect; who does he think he is?
Good for him; I hope he hurts enough feelings to actually make a difference !

I read the CSM's Facebook post, I also read the related article regarding FT. Irwins dress code. I personally do not see any problem here. I guess I am just "Old School" like the CSM. Some of these respondents see no problem with wearing PJ's out in public to the commissary. These folks are fortunate to be able to live on post, some of them sound like the typical entitlement crowd.

Someone need a copy of the Hurt Feelings Report again?
Remember when a uniform was uniform and you took pride in your unit?
Old school indeed.

Old School VS New School
I have a few relevant observations on this topic...
- For every SF guy that will make fun of the culture of "everyone gets a trophy" you will find at least two more that get pissed off because not everyone on the ODA is getting a BSM for service ("not everyone gets a trophy" or is that only valid as long as I get my trophy?)
- For every SF guy that will talk shit about the Nintendo generation, there are two more in the day room playing Call of Duty on the X-box 360.
- For every SF guy that will complain that the current crop of 18x-rays are out of shape, I'll show you at least two others that haven't taken a real PT test in over a year, but wont even score a 270 when they go to SLC.
- For every SF guy that will complain that young SF guys are undisciplined, I'll show you two others that cry like children when they are told there will be a uniform inspection prior to the units formal dinner
- For every guy that will put a statement like "my unit doesn't encourage attendance at unit functions" on a command climate survey I'll show you 5 more that will ask "that shit aint mandatory is it?"
- For every SF guy that will bitch about the lack of training opportunities, I can show you 4 others that sit in the team room watching movies and then slip out every day before 1700 unless they are on a tasking
I dont know if it is an Old School/New School issue as much as its just ten years of being spoiled rotten by the amount of freedom we have had downrange. Its frustrating when you have a bunch of good guys being "poisoned" by a few self important cry babies that aren't near as squared away as the stories they would have you believe.
Any thoughts? Or is it just me?

No, it's not just you. I'm sorry to say, but we see it every day too.

For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.

I agee CSM. This is like the 1SG and CSM I grew with in the Army. Now days, there is no personal responsibility taught in homes, no ethics or moral code of judgement taught. One doesn't get all that in boot camps today either. I was told Drill's take away your cell phone as punishment.

Nope, its not you Bro! Same dynamic in my day. I think it's human nature. I see it in business, saw it in academia, and the XO saw it in primary/secondary education. As I am fond of saying, it always, always comes down to competency of management/leadership. That's where the culture of any organization begins.

Is this what it's like today? If it is, it makes me wonder what would happen to a SGM Tabata today for ripping the ear-ring off of a male 4th POG EM in uniform in the dining facility who balked when told to remove it from his ear or a SGM Warren punching out an SF MSG in the orderly room for effing up support of a deployed ODA.

Destroyer CMC Sacked After Grabbing Sailor By Uniform
NavyTimes, 26 Aug 2013
The command master chief of the Everett, Wash.-based destroyer Shoup was fired Monday after being found guilty at captain’s mast of assaulting a junior sailor.
Command Master Chief (SW) Rick A. Helwick was relieved of his duties Monday following a substantiated allegation that he grabbed a junior sailor by the uniform blouse because he was not wearing the proper uniform, according to a Navy statement.
A Navy official confirmed Helwick was found to have committed assault, which falls under Article 128 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
Naval Surface Forces Pacific spokeswoman Cmdr. Tamsen Reese confirmed that Helwick has been flown off of the ship, which is deployed to 5th Fleet, and will be temporarily reassigned to Destroyer Squadron 9 in Everett.

Yes it is that way today...
-I was denied entry into group as a support guy for scoring 296 on the PT test by SFC Atwaters in 83; went back and took it in 5 days and maxed it.
-Get to Signal Company and pissed off 1SG Sample and he threatened to hit me in the head with a hammer he was holding while the company was in full formation.
-If the TS caught you on a run during AM PT; you were out there that afternoon.
-CWO Mackall stun-gunned me for making a smart-ass remark during a deployment as an E5.
Etc. etc. etc.
I sucked it up and didn't do it again.
