I'd say expecting 18-25 year old Americans to leave their homes for a year and give up alcohol and sex is an unrealistic expectation. Some may be okay with it, but others will seek to do what comes naturally.
I'd rather have a squad of warriors than monks anyway.

Unfortunately warrior carnivores terrify the political vegetarians that have been appointed to "lead".

But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.

Why not goats? It may be better than R2D2 at least you can see what you are getting.

Back in '81 I was chewed out by my company commander for having my platoon sing the jody:
We're gonna RAPE ... KILL .... PILLAGE ....and BURN
WE're gonna RAPEKILLPILLAGEANDBURN -- UNH-UNH
[Some of you olde-tymers might remember it]
Anyway, someone reported me to the BN CDR, and that = SRDH .... (shyte rolles dunhill). Told not to do it again; it "ain't politically correct anymore."
Oh ,..... and there was the time when I was acting commander vice the CO who was on leave. I was leading the company on a PT run as we intercepted an oncoming -- large -- PT formation ....
I sang out: "Look to the left and what do you see ..... a bunch of limp dicks lookin' back at me." My troops loved it!
A few minutes later, down the path later, a runner from that formation caught up with me requesting my name, unit, and commander's name.
The 101 CG was leading the opposing formation.
SRDH (again) but from a higher echelon: 3rd Brigade Commander > 2nd Battalion Commander > A Company Commander > 1st Platoon Leader (me).
After the butt-chewing, my CO confided, "well done! But don't ever do that again."
Sheesh. I think that's about the time the Army turned from a peace-time combat orientation to a full-time politically-correct orientation: 1981~82

We're not far behind the Japanese....... make sure you check out the photos......
This article coincides with many news articles that the Japanese birth rate is extremely low and that sales of adult diapers is far more than baby diapers.
The "warrior" is headed the way of the dodo.......

Between Sun and Moon: Feminine Japanese men
(Source: huanqiu.com)
When societies reach a certain peaceful level of wealth and abundance, the need for men to be masculine--to be "men"-- declines. So goes a popular theory.
Japan luckily has not had a war after the WWII, nor do we have any public army services. Maybe this could be some fact about the young Japanese men becoming more feminine in the past few years like the story that follows.
With his pink clothes and his high heels taller than those of many women’s, Akira, 20 years old from Tokyo, seems to prove this theory to be correct. He has no girlfriend, has no interest in dating, has no dream for his future. Instead of trying to find his own place and role in Japanese society, he escapes into a fantasy world where fashion is all. They believe that many more young men, not only in Japan, are destined to live similar lives. The following photos are taken by Japanese photographer Kentaro Takahashi.

I've studied Japanese language, married my language teacher in Monterey [MIIS, not DLI], lived in Japan for five years; I watch Japanese TV daily and have seen the rise of the "Sissy-Boy" Japanese male and I just wonder: what the hell happened to the warrior culture? Mostly you'll find it in the police kendo dojo or special-police aikido training [very VERY hard, old-school Yoshinkan ... one generation removed from Daitoryu Jujutsu]. You'll see some manly-men in the Ground Self-Defense Force ... the ones who like jukendo [bayonet fencing], airborne, etc. And you can see them in regular school and post-school martial arts dojo.
But where is the "Joe-Average" [...or "Taro-average"] overt male today in Japan?
Everything in Japan is "Trend" and those trends tend to hang around for a long time [viz: the girl-women making "v" for victory signs whenever a photo is taken .... even when they're in their post-30s]. The current trend is the feminization of the Japanese male -- the sissy-boy. You see the "talents" [TV hosts] wearing low-cut tee-shirts, girly-type sweaters, more makeup than that required to counter TV lighting (rouge, eyebrow liner, etc.), and worst of all -- girly mannerisms.
Possibly, if the Japanese economy picks up and there are more jobs available to young men, they won't have the luxury [or "need"] of leisurely parading around as a faux fashion ingénue; they will have to report daily to the office grind wearing suits.
To think that I'll be retiring to Japan in 3~5 years makes me shake my head in dispair. Pardon me as I head to the latrine to gag.

Since when is sex considered "conduct that is considered prejudicial to good order and discipline while conducting combat operations in a war zone?" I guess it's the whole Islam thing because I can recall stories of every generation of American soldiers having sex in war zones going all the way back to the Revolutionary war.

The difference is that in every other war the majority of the sex was not had with fellow soldiers. Therein lies the problem.

Yes, exactly.
Dumber than dirt. Young healthy men/women in a stressful environment with long periods of boredom...wtf does the CofCmd think is going to happen.
To pretend otherwise, and think a GO #1 will fix that, is criminally insane.

GO's
I seem to remember a couple of GO's who couldn't keep it in their pants while deployed as well, not that it's suprising for any of them to be trying to get a little piece while they're over there.
