My mother brought my grandmother out to CA in what would be her last visit to our house. She was 89 or 90 and my mother was in her 70s. I found stars that were light-years distant equal to their ages. I had them look through my 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope at "their" star. They were surprised that the light that they was looking at left that star at, roughly, the year of their birth.
I didn't get into the "photon dance" and explain that a photon, in a star the size of our Sun, takes about a million years to work it's way to the surface and streak to the eyes of those who are looking...where it "dies".
